My upgrade wish :)

Thank you for your thoughtful response!!!! I appreciate it so much. Was starting to feel bullied. (On a Disney board?! How sad!) I look forward to celebrating with my family and thank you for your kind wishes :)! I think Disney is the best place to celebrate a milestone or two. :)

This is my 1st time celebrating a birthday there and makes it extra special. Need to decide where to go for dinner on my birthday, so many choices. Try not to lay attention to any of the negative comments, beyond me why everyone can't just be positive, enough negative things happening in the world. Have a great day and look forward to reading your posts and trip updates :)

If it's an upgrade you want, then why not do the upgrade yourself? Have it be a gift for you, from you and don't take the chance of not getting it.

As you just edited your post, to the sense that you'll do anything to push your luck to get a "magical" upgrade, I'd already say that you're going to be in for a let down. My firm belief with Disney magic is that if you try to push and create magic, regardless the occasion, you will be left upset in the end when nothing happens.

I have no input as to tell you when to ask for an upgrade, but it should almost be something that you shouldn't ask for anyway. If they want to upgrade you, they will.

I would let Disney know for sure way in advance and call front desk, if they don't know they can't add magic. I've read a lot of posts that at 60 day online check in you might also be given an upgrade but not sure of the detail. I would then share at check in. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking it's the way people request. I think if you ask politely any hotel resort airline will do what they can. If they have availability then it makes sense. Upgrades are a great tool for customer loyalty and lots of businesses use this. Good luck :)

I wish you the happiest birthday. Cheers to celebrating in the best place on earth!!! (What kind of food do you like? Glad to give my 2 cents on where you can have your celebratory dinner! Hint: yachtsman steakhouse!)

For three rooms.....sorry probably not going to happen with three rooms
Not looking to upgrade all 3. I'm pretty realistic about that ;-) a little magic on one room would be more than magical enough :)

Discussion continuing...

Not once have you asked for anything, this time you are. You even said you're gonna put on your smiliest face and keep mentioning the milestones. Sure, one can say that they're not expecting anything, but the way you framed your initial post and then continued, you make it seem that this is the year you're gonna do what it takes to get an upgrade.

That's great that you're a selfless person, but you want something... you want an upgrade... you made it clear as day that is what you want.

Perhaps if you would've just said "I'll be headed to Disney soon, if anyone has had success getting an upgrade, did you ask for one? when did you ask? was it just given to you? I'm just seeing if there was any way of asking to see if one was available or if it's just Disney magic to get one" perhaps you may have set a different tone.

The information that you made available that you have 3 rooms at YC, birthdays, your big 4-0 and this your 40th trip, then asking about the best way to go about upgrades? Sorry, but it seems that less information would've been more beneficial in this initial post.

Pedantic !

I hope you do receive something special!

My mother and I just returned from her birthday trip (70-something milestone). We stayed at WL. It was noted on our reservation. At check in, I thought she would be wished a happy birthday and given the birthday button, since it was on our reservation. The CM said nothing and gave us our room info (we had also done online check in.) Upon arriving at our room, we noticed we were given a king bed (kind of odd for mother-daughter) and my mother was not happy with that arrangement.

So I returned to the front desk, mentioned our situation and that it was her birthday, could I have a button for her? The CM apologized, made a button and called to find another room for us. We did not receive an upgrade, our new room was the same category as we had paid for (which was fine).

My mother did not receive a birthday card or birthday call from Mickey & Minnie, things we have received in the past when celebrating birthdays at Disney.

This was also my 3rd stay at the WL in five months, so being "loyal" did not result in any perks.

I think there are so many people celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, etc. on any given day that it is not possible for everyone to receive the "magical pixie dust" they would love to get. Does it happen? Absolutely! But since it didn't for us, we did not wallow in disappointment but carried on and made our own celebration. We were in Disney, and that's all that mattered.

Beautifully put. We are on the same page! Expect nothing, hope for the best! Glad you had a magical trip with or without upgrade. :)

Are the three rooms on one reservation? If so, I highly doubt you'll get an upgrade.

Regardless, making a request that costs money (certain view, club level, etc.) is almost never granted. Those upgrades happen more on an ad hoc basis if standard rooms are overbooked. "Free" requests, such as a king bed or a certain building or floor are generally much more successful. Rather than asking for a free upgrade, try something like:

You: How much would it cost to upgrade one of the rooms to water view?
CM: That would be an extra $40 per night.
You: That's okay, I'll pass.

...and see what happens. It's a bit more subtle/classy than directly asking "can I have a free upgrade I didn't pay for?"

I'm not sure that anyone would say "can I have a free upgrade I didn't pay for" and it's certainly not been suggested anywhere on the post. I this the original poster is simply asking if due to the fact it's a 40th visit and 40th celebration birthday would it be likely. If I was the CM it duty manager at check in or room scheduling I would do my best to allocate an upgrade. I think calling front desk in advance and sharing the special occasion, options at 60 day online check in and actual check in would be the best timings to share its a very special trip. The poster was clear they would be more than delighted if one of the three rooms was upgraded. Disney don't only upgrade due to availability or being over booked they have many occasions where they will add extra Magic and for that to happen then need to be aware of the occassions.

If it was me I would upgrade all three of your rooms and I really hope you get s great upgrade :)

If you request an odd number room on the 3rd or 4th floor (3145-3157 or 4145-4157) at the Yacht Club, you will get the most "bang for your buck" without an upgrade. These are garden view rooms that are close to the elevator (a plus because the hallways at Yacht are long!) and they face Epcot...meaning you can see Illuminations while on your balcony :joyfull:. We could also see a little of Stormalong Bay and Crescent Lake. But watching Illuminations from our balcony was the best!!

First of all, I said the upgrade is "unlikely," not that it's "unlikely because the CM would be unwilling to try." The CM might very well be willing to try, but that doesn't mean there's anything they can do when there's limited availability in various room categories. Based on actual facts of how often these things work, not every cast member is as generous as you say you'd be in that position.
