My upgrade wish :)

Hey guys,

We are taking out 3 rooms at the Yacht Club this April. While there are a few birthdays in one of our rooms, I'm actually celebrating my big 4-0 birthday in addition to a another milestone - my 40th trip to WDW! A special trip indeed.

Do you think this will get me any greater chance of a room upgrade at the YC? Should I put the request in ahead of time or is it better to do so at the check-in desk upon arrival or pre-check-in?

I know I'm not technically entitled but I am kinda hoping for the chance for a free water, club level or suite upgrade from my standard garden view room. I know it's obviously not guaranteed but if I'm going to ask, I want to ask at the optimal time. Suggestions? :)

PS yes I know much of this depends on how empty the resort is at the time, the CM helping us and the star alignment..but anything I can do to push my luck, I will do!

I don't think I would ask for an upgrade specifically. I would make sure they knew what you are celebrating.

If it's an upgrade you want, then why not do the upgrade yourself? Have it be a gift for you, from you and don't take the chance of not getting it.

As you just edited your post, to the sense that you'll do anything to push your luck to get a "magical" upgrade, I'd already say that you're going to be in for a let down. My firm belief with Disney magic is that if you try to push and create magic, regardless the occasion, you will be left upset in the end when nothing happens.

I have no input as to tell you when to ask for an upgrade, but it should almost be something that you shouldn't ask for anyway. If they want to upgrade you, they will.

I have no expectations therefore no disappointment should I not get an upgrade. The garden view cost enough so if I get a nice surprise, it will be just that. I'll put on my smiliest face possible and keep mentioning the milestone. We shall see what happens! :)

Well, you did say you're taking out 3 rooms. That says enough there that if you wanted better, you should've chosen it at that time. I'm sure the CM's will be at their smiliest too when they have to hear you keep mentioning milestones that they've heard numerous times before.

Again, pushing the issue will get you nowhere.

I sense a bit of attitude. Mentioning a milestone at check-in shouldn't be annoying to any cast member. I chose garden view because that's the best I could afford after the room promotion. If my post annoys you, don't feel compelled to respond. Just looking for some friendly advice. PS in 40 years I never once asked for anything free. Thought it might be a nice time to try.

I love following this board. WDW Magic is my place to read about my fave place in the world as I relax in bed at night. Lately, I've noticed a different, less enjoyable tone in the conversations and different posts. This is why I haven't posted myself in a while. Not for nothing..just wanted to vent a little. Don't mean to generalize, as there are plenty of nice convos and trip reports to read.

I've noticed a tone shift as well and it is going along with the societal change of entitlement. It is present on these boards and others. You're right. There are plenty of nice convos and such, but there are some where when the initial post is presented, can generate a sense and set a tone for the responses which follow.

If you re-read my posts, any of them on any topic, I assure you there is no tone nor entitlement. I clearly noted it wasn't expected and that I'm happy no matter what happens. I do not deserve to be clumped with anyone else who does demonstrate the things you describe.

I re-read post number 1 of this thread. Just because you say technically doesn't change the second word. It seems that though you're not technically feeling it, you still are in a sense though because of 3 rooms, 4-0 birthday and 40 trips. Technically.

Once again, in 4 decades, not once have I asked for anything from Disney.

I'm a selfless person. I do much for others and treat myself and my family once a year to the best vacation I can afford.

You take the word "entitlement" ignoring all the rest and use it to prove your point against a very nice person who expects nothing who you know nothing about. If asking for an upgrade is a sore spot for you, why do you continue to post on a thread titled "upgrade"?

Convo over. Technically.

Discussion continuing...

Not once have you asked for anything, this time you are. You even said you're gonna put on your smiliest face and keep mentioning the milestones. Sure, one can say that they're not expecting anything, but the way you framed your initial post and then continued, you make it seem that this is the year you're gonna do what it takes to get an upgrade.

That's great that you're a selfless person, but you want something... you want an upgrade... you made it clear as day that is what you want.

Perhaps if you would've just said "I'll be headed to Disney soon, if anyone has had success getting an upgrade, did you ask for one? when did you ask? was it just given to you? I'm just seeing if there was any way of asking to see if one was available or if it's just Disney magic to get one" perhaps you may have set a different tone.

The information that you made available that you have 3 rooms at YC, birthdays, your big 4-0 and this your 40th trip, then asking about the best way to go about upgrades? Sorry, but it seems that less information would've been more beneficial in this initial post.

Less information? Setting the stage for my question is not something I regret. Only spending precious time reading your posts is regretful. Time to pick on someone else.

Like I said, a simple "Has anyone had any success with getting an upgrade? If so, how did it happen?" was all that needed to be asked. The rest of the information isn't necessary.

In the end the front desk CM have precious little leeway in what they can do. Most "upgrades" happen at scheduling to accommodate overbooking or rooms out of service. It's like hoping the bank teller will upgrade your withdrawal cause you are sweet. Even if they wanted to they probably can't. That being said I hope you get an upgrade and Happy Birthday youngster!

Hi,

First of all with 40 trips to Disney you deserve a free trip never mind an upgrade. Disney can only create Magic wheh they know when to so I would call front desk and add a note to your booking its your 40th and 40th trip. I am sure that they will do what they can especially given your loyalty in trips and booking three rooms. I would get rather see you get an amazing upgrade than a booking due to being oversold. Your not being rude in any way asking Disney and they make billons of dollars from loyal returning guests like yourself. Good luck happy birthday when it comes and have the best trip ever :)

Thank you for your thoughtful response!!!! I appreciate it so much. Was starting to feel bullied. (On a Disney board?! How sad!) I look forward to celebrating with my family and thank you for your kind wishes :)! I think Disney is the best place to celebrate a milestone or two. :)
