My O'Hana experience (1st time since changes)

Since there hasn't been enough discussion about the changes at O'Hana's  and since everyone is waiting with baited breathe for my opinion   here goes:

1 - wonton chips w/ dipping sauce replacing bread. I normally love bread before a meal, but the sweet bread (not brains) they gave you previously didn't do anything for me, so I have no problem with it being replaced. The dipping sauces were a nice change of pace and quite tasty. POSITIVE change

2 - appetizers served in separate white bowls replacing the "lazy Susan". The presentation took a BIG hit here. Something "kitchy" about the lazy Susan, so the white bowls pale in comparision. NEGATIVE change.

3 - shrimp w/ pineapple/peppers as appetizers replaced shrimp on skewers during meal. I like the new flavor of the shrimp, gives it a little bit of sweetness, but I still liked the look and taste of the shrimp grilled on the skewers. MINOR NEGATIVE change.

4 - scalloped potatoes replacing rice during appetizer. As far as I know there isn't anything "polynesian" or tropical about cheesey potatoes, but damn if they weren't the best I've ever had in my life. I went in thinking "Betty Crocker Au Gratin", which I'll eat at home, but not something I think of as 'fine dining". I have no idea how they make them, but I'll be, they were excellent and seemed alot more "high brow" than you would think. I enjoyed the rice, so I'll consider this an even exchange. NEUTRAL change

5 - added sausage to skewers during meal. Since the shrimp wasn't really replaced and just changed, the addition of sausage is welcomed. Now I just need an angioplasty after the meal. POSITIVE addition.

6 - banana bread pudding "sorta" replacing pineapple for dessert. Since you can still get pineapple if you ask for it, I don't consider this a complete replacement. Pineapple we received was alot more juicy & ripe than what they normally used to serve. Granted, it's only in a white bowl and not with the nice toothpicks on the skin. So the pineapple presentation took another hit, but the taste was better. Yes, you can still get caramel sauce.
The bread pudding was AMAZING. I can go either way with bread pudding, it's either good or a soggy mess. But this was nice and firm, tasty, w/ banana foster caramel sauce & big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Plus you can get more if you like (which we took advantage of). Did I mention I could use an angioplasty yet  Overall, MINOR NEGATIVE presentation change & POSITIVE addition on bread pudding.

Overall I will say that the presentation of items has defintely decreased BUT the food itself has more positive than negative changes, so I still did and will enjoy O'Hana's in the future. I can be as picky as the next person over some of the changes (I had my wedding rehersal dinner there 5 years ago) so the "way it was" was close to my heart.

If you've never been to O'Hana's though you won't have to think about any changes and you'll just love it. :D

Thanks Kevin!

Good review!

I really never cared much for the bread or the wonton chips, either, but I too, think the lazy susan presentation of the appetizers was part of the "fun" of the meal.

The shrimp is good served the new way, and I think it has a lot less chance of being overcooked and dry by doing it like that instead of on the grill. I like it! :slurp:

The potatoes were good too, but again...I'm not one to fill up on wontons and potatoes when I can have 7 kinds of meat and pineapple! I'm with you all the way on the sausage addition! Good add!

The pineapple and caramel sauce was something the really set an O'Hana meal apart from every other "ordinary" dinner. It really kept the whole "Polynesian" theme flowing to the very end and we always looked forward to it. That said, I have always been a huge fan of bread pudding, and the presentation with the caramel sauce and ice cream almost puts it in the same class as the previous dessert.

I, too, will continue to enjoy the O'Hana experience at least once every couple times down.

:sohappy:

Great Review Kevin! I've always loved Ohana and agree with many of your points! Thanks for sharing... (and making me crave that shrimp!) ;)

I like the sound of the new items on the menu and look forward to eating there when I go. I don't like shrimp, so a new skewer item is welcome for me. They did have the potatos when I was there last august and I also agree that they were very good. Thanks for the review.

Thanks Kevin, that was a perfect update. I think I will give it a try, even though I will miss the rice, but the irish in me will love the potatoes. I think I can handle the bread change too, and I am glad to hear that you can still get the pineapple, and get the bread pudding.

Not only can you get both, you get get 2nds and 3rds, if you really can eat that much.

O'Hana's still gives you one of the best, if not THE best, "bang for the buck". The sheer amount of food served to you is pretty staggering IMNSHO :D

we ususally do one big huge meal a day, and the last time at O'hana we flew in from chicago, eating once at 8 am, then not again till 5 pm (4 central time). We were starved, and I am pretty sure my family of 6 at just about everything in the place. except for pork. we don't like pork in our family.

We spent 200+ bucks on dinner, but we ate so much that we didn't need to eat again till lunch the next day. it was well worth it!

I'm so glad to hear that you can still get the pineapple and carmel, it was my favorite thing there and really the only thing that would get me into the restaurant.

I'm happy to hear that you had a good time and enjoyed many of the changes. However, since I haven't been there in a few years I was wondering if they still had the salmon?
