So I've been dreaming up this Beastly Kingdom-esque land for a while, and I figured I'd post my first ride for the land. It's called Dragon's Spire. I'll post the backstory and attraction overview tonight, and update some other time.
The Legend of Dragon’s Spire
During the very first days of the world, while the land was rocked with vicious volcanic eruptions and ground-shaking quakes, the first mountain was born. The spire sprung up from the earth like a enormous fang biting into the sky. There it stood, spewing fire, alone and foreboding, like a citadel in the middle of an open sea of darkness. This was Dragon’s Spire.
Time went by and a grand forest grew around the base of the mount. The land became a verdant area dotted with lagoons and rivers. It also became a haven for some of the globe’s rarest creatures. Unicorns grazed in the forest meadows, merpeople swam in its waters, gryphons soared in the sky, the dwarves mined the mountain, and even elves came and made towns in the trees.
But the peaceful serenity of the woods would not last. One beautiful day, horror swooped down from the sky. Fire rained down like a typhoon, but it was not from the mountain. No, it came from a great shadow that hovered in the sky. The shade was a dragon, the most fearsome beast to ever saunter the earth. The demon was known as Draig, and he was the most dangerous dragon of all. He dove down and incinerated most of the great forest, exterminating many of the beings living there.
Draig then plundered the dwarve’s mines and underground city, taking the treasures as his own. The fiend claimed the grandest, deepest chamber in the mountain as his lair. There he slept, only leaving the mount to feed and gather more treasure.
The dragon left much destruction in his wake. Half of the woods became a dark, wild place, inhabited by werewolves, chimeras, and other dangerous beasts. The good creatures of the forest moved to the outer ring, where they attempted to rebuild their lives. The split gave the forest two names, the Forbidden forest and the Forest of Calm.
Years passed, the dragon periodically struck from his domain, and no one dared to step foot in the Forbidden forest. Until the fateful day a brave Elven knight decided to storm Draig’s Fortress. The knight was tired of draig invading his town, and decided to free the land from the fear of the dragon.
He set out from the city of the Elves with the blessings of his people. They gave him the Pandryl Mas, an enchanted sword that was said to be the dragon’s only weakness. The Dwarves also bestowed apon him a suit of armor made of mythril, a metal that would help protect him from the beast’s Razor claws and fangs. He then set out into the Forest of calm on his steed, a unicorn named Cydi.
After traveling for a few days under the lush canopies he came upon a lagoon where a tribe of merpeople resided. He told them of his hunt to rid the land of Draig. They said they would gladly help him in his quest. He was given the Sharaes, a shield with the power to repel fire.
The Knight reached the edge of the forbidden forest on his third day of the journey. Before he enter the horrible place, a great gryphon soared over him, and landed with grace directly in front of him. The majestic creature handed the warrior a bright and shining crystal with its powerful talon, and then took off into the night sky. The Knight pondered what the use of this odd stone was, but could not decipher it. So he headed into the darkness that was the Forbidden forest.
For five days the brave soldier braved the dangers of the untamed wilderness. He clashed with the foul creatures of that place. The ferocious Werewolves and the mighty chimera fell to his blade as he approached the Dragon’s spire.
He entered the gigantic mountain through the great arch the dwarves had crafted for their mine, and started his search for the dragon. He wound his way through the Dwarve’s mines before stumbling upon their abandoned mine train. After a few hours of tinkering, he got the old steam engine to work. He hopped aboard the train and held on as it sped through the dark tunnels at an alarming rate. After a few hairpin turns the train slowed, and he saw a light radiating farther down the tunnel. He prepared for the battle of his life.
The train emerged into an enormous room filled with gigantic piles of gold and other treasures from throughout the land, and in its center slept Draig, the great dragon. About twenty-five feet in length, His skin was the darkest red you could ever imagine, and look as if it were made of magma taken right out of the core of the very earth. His wings were spread as if he were in mid flight. The leathery, muscle-ripped wings were at least fifteen feet long each, and looked as if they could demolish a building with ease. His long, whip-like tail swung back and forth, and was tipped with a mace. His back was hunched, and he had a line of spikes running down his spine, all the way to his forehead. He had a face that would strike the fear into the heart of any man. Some of his sharpened fangs stuck out from his lips, and he had smoke billowing out of his nostrils.
The knight was amazed, but he was not shaken. He approached the ferocious beast carefully, intent on catching it by surprise. Unfortunately, the demon was ready. He opened its fire red eyes and gave out an ear shattering roar. He reared up on his muscular hind legs and swiped at the hero with his great claws, which the knight evaded. The beast let out a huge spray of fire, but the knight was protected by the shield he was given by the Merpeople. The dragon swung his bludgeoning tail at the shield and knocked it from the knights grasp. The warrior knew he would not last long with out the shield, so he decided to go on the defensive. He slashed out with the sword and succeeded in wounding the dragon’s eye.
Their battle went on for hours, neither combatant had the clear upper hand. The dragon could not locate the knight due to his injury, but the knight could not approach the dragon due to the fire that was spewing from the creature’s mouth. The Knight however knew that He had less of a chance to win this battle if it continued like this. He decided on one last offensive. He rushed towards the great beast. The dragon sensed the rushing hero, and whipped his head around to face Him. The dragon summoned an enormous fireball, and the knight lept for the dragon’s throat. As the two collided a white light filled the room…
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
That is the tale of dragon’s Spire. No soul has stepped inside of that fortress since the day of the epic battle. Draig never struck from his castle of solitude since then, but rumors still persist that his great roar can be heard breaking the dead calm of night, and his fire still bellows from the depths of the mount…
Attraction description
Okay, this was done with no concern for budget. Because it would have to be huge for this attraction to happen, not to mention the land that is built around it.
Guests enter the queue in the main hub area known as the “City of the Elves.” The sign is a big arch with the words “Dragon’s Spire” in a fiery writing ala the sign from “Journey to the Center of the Earth” from TDS. The queue is broken up into four parts: the Forest of Great Calm section, the Forbidden Forest section, the pre show, and the short section inside the mountain before boarding the train. Through out the first two parts of the line you are given the back story via stone tablets.
In the Forest of Great Calm, you walk by lush gardens and trees. You hear all the sounds of the various creatures that live in the area. You then pass into the dark and dreary Forbidden Forest. The vegetation is different shades of black, grey, and brown, and all of it is dead and foreboding. You here the cry of the werewolf in this area.
After entering the mountain, you are in the pre show room. You are on one side of a pond that is about 12-15 feet wide, and are on 3 different levels, much like RnR. On the other side of the water seems to be nothing more than a rock wall. Suddenly the torches that light the cavern go out, and the wall comes alive. There is an elven face in the wall and it begins to tell a condensed version of the knight’s tale. A water screen appears infront of the wall showing pictures of the battle. It then disappears and the face reveals that it is the knight, kept alive by the jewel the gryphon presented him before the battle. He warns that the dragon still dwells deep within the mountain, and he cannot garuntee or safety if we choose to explore its caverns. And of course, we do choose to continue…
Next we exit into a short queue inside the mountain. There are small geothermal vents that give off steam(fog) every so often. Made to make you really feel like your in a volcanic mountain.
The loading platform has air gates, and is very similar to BTM. The trains themselves are very similar to Big Thunder, except they are older looking, and have dwarven writing on them to make it look like the dwarves just got up and ran when the dragon came. These are not regular roller coaster cars. No, they are incredibly sophisticated. They can rotate during show scenes much like an omnimover. Don’t ask me how, I’m not that good of an engineer…yet.
After boarding the train, you immediately go careening down a short, banked hill and into the lift hill. When ascending you pass old dwarven mining equipment and shinny crystals, which is apparently what they were looking for in the first place. Planning on having a real cool hidden character(s) here.
At the top of the hill you go down a hill and some banks and a very small helix before entering the first, and largest, of three show scenes. You enter the treasure cave amidst piles of gold. You turn the corner, and come face to face with Draig, who is directly to your rigth. Your car turns to face him. He is standing on his hind legs slightly hunched over. He is a specimen, a very detailed AA. Moving neck, eyes, mouth, tongue, and nostrils for a breathing effect. His tail swings back and forth, and his wings move slightly. Suddenly he begins to stare you down, and opens his mouth. You believe its to douse you in flames, but you’re wrong. The beast begins to talk to you. He roars that you shall be destroyed for awaking him from his slumber. He then lets out a howl, as you turn to face the correct way, and then speed off into the dark caverns. You speed through the darkness, with the occasion blast of fire, or glimpse of Draig’s gaping jaws, doing one loop in the process. You then speed through a scene much like the yei encounter in EE. You speed under an AA of Draig, who spits fire at you. After some more coaster, you go into the final show scene. You slow down for a final confrontation with Draig, who seems to have you trapped. Just then, the ghostly apparition of the knight appears and fights off the dragon as we escape. You depart the ride in a different location than you enterd. No on ride photo, because I don’t want one on the ride. So you just exit into a gift shop that exits back into the hub area.
Tell me what you guys think. Recomindations welcome.
