My first overnight stayt at a Universal Resort

Recently had my first stay at Universal. Stayed at the royal pacific for 1 night, and I must say WOW Uni will definitely be cutting into my disney time/dollars from here on out.

We paid around $250. And I cannot express how much of a better value it is for your money over a similarly priced hotel at disney. The express pass alone made it all worth it.

We loved how close both the parks and citywalk were. The boat rides were always quick and pleasant. Evverything was working at the parks. I did not see one burnt out light bulb, or one missing fog effect. Every cm was more disney like than disney cm's (except for one who yelled at some folks for taking off their shoes on ripsaw) but everyone else was more than helpful and polite. They all waved when your ride vehicle left the platform. Everyone was all smiles. I really couldnt believe how some people say uni employees were worst than disney's. On the contrary I actually found them to be more pleasant than some of the disney cm's.

We chose the universal meal plan and to be able to eat all we wanted for 2 days for just $24? I thought that was an extremely good deal. We ate even when we werent hungry, just because we could!

If you are ever going to uni and staying for 1 night but doing 2 days at the parks. I highly recommend staying at one of their hotels. If for no other reason than being able to use express pass for both of the days. The longest we had to wait for any ride was for dudley do right's and that was only 5 min! Its a weird but liberating sensation to see a ride wait time posted at 90 min, and literally just walk on to a ride vehicle with the express pass.

I also noticed alot more mists and fans than at disney. It seemed like uni knows its unbearably hot, and they add fans and misters wherever they can to help cool down the guests. Wouldve loved to see more of this when I did disney 2 weeks prior to this trip. With the exception of ak which is the only disney park Ive seen with fans and misters. I actually had to grind my teeth and pay $18 for one of the little fan bottles/misters just to make it through the other 3 parks.

My only gripes about the trip?

- Uni needs to stay open later. IOA closing at 9pm on a saturday and the studios closing at 8pm on a sunday? really? I guess its comparable to epcot and dhs but still, I find there to be way more to do at the uni parks than epcot and dhs so they should atleast stay open til 10/11 pm.

-Uni charges $15 for self parking. The hotel was originally about $230 but with taxes and parking it came out to $250. Still a better value than comparable disney resorts, but charging for self parking is really unnecessary when your paying more than $200 for a hotel. I am very forgiving about this due to the express pass. but still...

- When you get the meal plan, the places you can eat at all have the same 3 desserts, and they all suck. The only food we didnt like was louie's fettucini alfredo. Everything else though (especially the asian food at the international food and film festival) was surprisingly good.

Random Thought: Does anyone know what they use for the smell in the e.t. queue? It was the only ride we were willing to wait in a regular line for just so we can smell the queue longer. Seriously.. its what I picture heaven to smell like lol

Despite the early park closure, the parking and the desserts. We did have an amazing time. I have been spoiled by uni. And from now on whenever I head up to orlando I will most definitly be cutting into my disney days with a trip over to universal.

(for the bashers I am no troll, just someone who was seriously impressed by their first overnight stay at a universal resort)

Quite interesting although I think it is in the wrong place and perhaps will be moved soon. Thank you however, we already skipped Universal twice and always thought if it would be worth to go there while staying at Disney or better to stay at an Universal resort, Royal Pacific being our favorite too. Universal Express included is quite a perk.

Good. I hope more people take notice of the improvements Universal has made (aside from Potter) in the last few years. Healthy competition should encourage Disney to get their act together.

Excellent report.

I can't wait for our first stay at a Universal Resort, It probably won't be until late 2012 or early 2013 though.

Glad to hear Uni's maintenance team is staying on top of the attractions and effects.

Uni is always cutting into our Disney time now days. If I am in central Fl, it seems crazy to not at least get a day and night in at Uni.

I never liked that they don't have fireworks, at least most of the year.

As for the Express Pass, note that you don't have to stay in a hotel to get it, it is available as an add-on to a regular admission ticket.

You also can't use it for Rip Ride Rocket or Forbidden Journey.

I've never stayed at a Universal or Disney hotel but the Universal ones in particular I think look pretty dated and "tramp-ish" on the outside. Maybe i'm mistaken though.

We go to Universal every trip we make but always just think its more what we call "neddy" than Disney - maybe because you can buy alcohol so freely. It definitely has a different clientel to that of Disney.

Just depends what you're in to I suppose.

.

If that's true that changes a lot. One of the reasons I planned to stay at the Royal Pacific were the amenities including the Universal Express to avoid long waits in WWoHP. If the Express cannot be used at FJ that takes away a major perk.

They do but if you buy it, you can only ride the rides once without a wait. with the express pass you can ride them over and over again withiut any wait. This really came in handy when we wanted to do mummy and jurassic park 5 or 6x in a row

I can see what your saying, but for the most part the crowds at uni look the same as the crowds at disney. I did however notice there werent as many strollers or ecv's, which imo is a good thing.

Interesting, because that is not how they advertised it, at least last time I was there. We didn't buy it - didn't need it, the park was dead except for WWoHP, and even that wasn't too bad. But they were pushing it at the ticket booth, and they never mentioned that it could only be used once on each ride.

yup those are the only 2 rides you cant use them on. It really wasnt a problem for us though. If you stay at the one of their hotels you get to go into wwohp 1 hour earlier than regular guests. Which does make a difference. The park opened at 9 and we got there around 8:15, were able to ride fj twice with only about a 5 min wait.

Also single rider line is not advertised at fj and you wouldnt even know it existed unless you asked. We were able to get on again around 1:30 using it and it was barely a 10 minute wait.

Also in terms of wwohp crowd levels, seemed to me that the part of the park was crowded mostly from late morning to late afternoon. About an hour or 2 before park closing, it becomes alot less crowded. We were able to ride once more about half an hour before park closing with a 15 min wait, and that was on a saturday night.

Yea I think they have 2 different types of express pass you can buy. 1 is the regular express pass which is only good for not having to wait once on a ride. And the other one is the vip pass which includes park entry and unlimited rides but is like $200 for 2 days I think. We figured for that amount we might as well just stay at the resort.

Mickey Mind -

Thanks for your report. I had my first stay at a Uni resort over spring break and we liked it too. The only thing I differ from you on is that we did the meal deal and thought the food options were awful. But, we might be pickier/have different tastes. Otherwise, I agree. The Express Pass is awesome and getting to hit HP an hour before the park opens to non-resort guests is also awesome.

That's exactly what I thought when I started planning a possible two-day wdw-break at Universal. I also want to compare the Royal Pacific and the Polynesian as they have a similar yet not completely the same theming.

I would love to stay at the polynesian one day too, but we have never been able to justify the price of staying there for even 1 night. Almost $400 for a regular room? seriously? And there is no added benefit other than being able to take the monorail to the mk. Maybe one day soon when I win the lottery

I like Royal Pacific a lot but last time I stayed there (in January) I happened to use two of the lobby restrooms on two separate days and they were absolutely filthy. Like the sort of thing I associate with gas station restrooms along the freeway. So that took away from the experience a bit.

It was completely worth staying on site for the early entry into WWoHP, which I thought completely made up for not being able to use Express Pass on FJ. Granted it was January and I prefer the queue to the ride anyway, but still.
