My 1st Trip Report: A Magical Anniversary, January 2012

I’m extremely excited to be starting my first-ever trip report! We’re still WDW newbies (this was our 2nd trip), so everything is still shiny and new and exciting for us. A lot of the things we got to do on this trip were firsts for us, so I hope that you will enjoy experiencing this with me again (and have patience with me as I stumble through writing my first TR!). Our first trip was in August 2011 with my 6-year old son, and seeing as we jumped at the chance to go back only 5 months later, you can assume that we’re totally addicted! :)

This trip was a 1-year anniversary celebration for my husband Shawn and me, so I will start with a picture of us from our wedding day. We got married on the beach at sunset on New Year’s Eve in 2010. We rented a house for the week and had very close friends/family stay with us, and our reception was also a NYE party. My son walked me down the aisle (or, as he would correct me, "down the sand"), and it was an absolutely perfect day!

picture.php

Fast-forwarding back to the present…our trip took place from Saturday, January 7th – Sunday, January 15th, 2012. It was pretty awesome to have a big trip to look forward to right after the holidays; usually it’s a bummer to know that Christmas is over and the decorations have to come down. This year, I was excited that packing away the tree meant that I was only a couple of days away from going to WDW! I also had a lot of guilt about not taking my son, but it just wasn’t possible since he was just going back to school from the holidays. Knowing that we were going to be bringing him back in the summer helped ease that guilt, and I was really excited about enjoying the “adult” side of Disney!

When we were there last August, all I wanted was for our son to have the time of his life. The magic for me was seeing his eyes light up and experiencing everything through him. And it was completely, totally magical; we had some moments that I know I’ll never, ever forget. The magic on this trip was different, but we found it all over the place! The best way that I can think of to describe it is that I got to let my inner kid out, and the magic was there directly for me.

The morning of our trip, we woke up at 4:30 am to get to the airport for our 7:05 flight. We live about 15 minutes from the airport, so it was a quick drive. Before we knew it, we had boarded the plane and we were watching the sun rise from the air. Very, very cool way to start the day!

picture.php

Shawn dozed for most of the flight, and I read. I don’t go anywhere without my Nook, and I love it so much that it even has a name. Yup, I know I’m a total nerd. Upon our arrival, we quickly made our way over to baggage claim and then to get our rental car. My corporate discount, and the convenience of not having to wait for buses, makes renting a car totally worth it to us!

We were staying at Port Orleans French Quarter, which was totally charming. I had visited New Orleans a few months earlier for a girls’ weekend with my college friends, and absolutely loved it, so I was excited about staying here. Our room wasn’t ready yet (which we expected, since it was only about 9:30 am), so we decided to grab some breakfast before heading out for the day. A lot of runners from the half marathon were returning to the resort at this point, and the food court was pretty packed. We knew exactly what we wanted – beignets! We got our food, and found a table outside to enjoy our breakfast in the sunshine.

picture.php

While we were eating, Shawn asked me if we were going to have an issue getting into the parks that day. We had to book our first night separately from the rest of our trip in order to get free dining (that promotion didn’t start until Sunday), and our park tickets were a part of the package deal. We decided to ask before we left the resort, and it’s a good thing we did! The front desk staff was great – they were quickly able to transfer one day’s admission onto our keys, and told us that we would need to come down the next morning to get the keys for the rest of the week. We wouldn’t be changing rooms, but we would have new keys with our dining and park admission on them. With that crisis quickly averted, we were off to our first park – Hollywood Studios!

We chose DHS as our first park to visit for a couple of reasons: first of all, this was the last day of the Osborne Lights, and I really, really wanted to experience it. It was also the next-to-last day of Fantasmic, which was closing for a refurb. Fantasmic was the only show that we didn’t get to see on our last trip, and it was probably the one that I had most wanted to see. I was determined that we were going to see both!

It was pretty cool to see the Christmas tree and decorations still up when we arrived at the park. Despite the fact that the holidays were over, I was still feeling quite festive.

picture.php

The first place we headed was to see if there were any FP’s left for TSMM. Surprisingly, there were, so we grabbed them and then headed to ToT for our first ride of the trip! It was about a 20-minute wait, but we didn’t mind. This was our first time getting to ride this one together – last time, we had each gone once alone, because we thought it might be a little too intense for a 5-year-old. Waiting also gave us some time to look through the Hidden Mickey book and officially start our hunt.

picture.php

We both loved ToT (and it was even more fun to have someone to share it with!), and after that we headed right for Rock N Roller Coaster. We are both big coaster fans, and again, this was one we had done only once, and alone. The line was pretty long, so we decided to go through the Single Rider line and save ourselves some time. After that, it was time for lunch!

We were previously pretty disappointed with the food at DHS, so I had made an ADR for Sci-Fi Dine In Theater. After about a 15-min wait, we were shown to our table. This place has such a unique and cool ambiance! We both ordered Diet Cherry Cokes (with real cherries!) that were delicious, and we shared the Crispy Onion Ring appetizer that was also very good. That was my favorite part of the meal.

picture.php

I had the Smoked Turkey Sandwich (picture didn’t turn out so great due to the lighting), and I definitely wouldn’t order it again. Turkey sandwiches are usually my go-to thing to order, but I only ended up eating about half of this one. I wasn’t crazy about the bread, and the sandwich itself just wasn’t very good.

picture.php

Shawn had the All-American Picnic Burger. He didn’t realize when he ordered it that it was actually a burger topped with a hot dog. It was dark and he wasn’t reading closely. He said it was good, but it was a bit too much, and he probably wouldn’t order it again, either.

picture.php

I was glad that we came here – the experience was really cool, but other than the Onion Rings, I found the food to be disappointing. Especially when we realized that we had dropped almost $50 on it. Luckily, free dining started the next day!

After lunch, we headed for another one of our favorites – Star Tours! Only a 15 minute wait, and we got the Wookie Planet (one of my favorites)/Death Star scenes. We got off and hopped right back in line, and this time we got the AT-AT/Coruscant scenes. We decided to head back to Tower of Terror, and as we were getting in line, a very nice man came by and handed me 2 fast passes, which totally made our day! Next up was the Great Movie Ride (no wait at all), then we got in line for Voyage of the Little Mermaid. This had been closed for a refurb on our previous trip, so I was looking forward to seeing it. We got in line, and had our first experience with the tour groups. We had seen several on and off all day, but had done a pretty good job of avoiding them. Not so much this time…and I definitely saw what people were talking about with them holding places for people in line, being loud, etc. Waiting inside the room before you enter the theater was NOT a fun experience – there were so many people crammed in there! I was honestly pretty disappointed with the show. The giant Ursula was very cool, but I had been expecting more from the show and wished it was longer. I’ll take my son back to see it, but it won’t be making my list of must-do attractions.

When we got out of the show, I was really in the mood for a treat, so we headed over to Starring Rolls. I wanted to grab a cupcake before we got in line for Fantasmic. However, I didn’t realize that it closed at 4:00 (it was probably about 4:15 at this point), and I was really disappointed to have missed it, but knew we’d be back another day. We headed toward the Fantasmic theater, and there was a HUGE crowd in the street in front of it. They were just starting to let people head inside, so we joined the crowd. We ended up with really good seats (3rd row in the middle), and we had such a long wait that we ended up having a Mickey bar and a box of popcorn before it began.

picture.php

I also got to witness a bit of Disney magic while we waited. We were close to the end of the aisle, with only 2 ladies beside us (one of whom was nice enough to take the above pic). A mother and her teenage son were behind them, and they were there celebrating the son’s birthday. He had Down’s, and was a really sweet kid. While we were waiting, we chatted a little bit with both groups. Shortly before the show started, the mom sent her son down to buy a sorcerer’s hat that he had really been wanting (the merchandise guy was right in front of us with all of his light-up goodies). She didn’t realize that he couldn’t purchase it with her KTTW, and she didn’t have enough cash on her, so he came back and sat down. Without saying a word, the lady beside us immediately stood up and went down and bought the hat. When she brought it back up and gave it to him, he was so happy that he burst into tears and gave her a hug. It brought tears to MY eyes, too – to see someone going out of their way to make sure a stranger has a happy birthday was awesome. I could tell that it totally made his mother’s day, too.

Finally – Fantasmic started! And…I loved it! It was definitely worth the wait. None of my pictures turned out very well, so I’m not going to include them. But it was awesome – I can’t wait to see it again (and try to get some better pictures)!

After the show, we headed toward TSMM to use our FP’s, but as we walked past ToT, we saw that the line was very short, so we took a quick detour for one last ride on it. Then it was off to TSMM!

picture.php

I love this ride, and Shawn and I are always very competitive when we ride. This time he beat me, but not by much. For any Survivor fans who might be reading – Ethan Zahn and Jenna Morasca were riding in the car behind us. I spotted them standing over on the side where you unload while we were waiting to load. They were with a cast member in a suit, and they were loaded from that side. I liked him a lot on all of the seasons he was on, so it was kinda cool to see him. I didn’t snap any pics – I know they were just trying to enjoy a low-key day at the park and I didn’t want to be obnoxious.
After this, we had one more ride on Star Tours, and this time, Shawn was the Rebel Spy! He was so excited about it, he even bought the “I was the rebel spy” pin for his new collection. :)

After a short break for a goodnight call to our son (which I admit, had me feeling a little sad), we headed into the Osborne Lights. Wow – talk about lifting your spirits!

picture.php

picture.php

The pictures do not do this display justice…it was breathtaking! As we walked around, marveling at everything, SNOW began to fall in front of me! I felt like such a little kid. It was so magical, even after the holidays were over. I am so, so glad that we were able to see it.

picture.php

picture.php

After walking around and taking it all in for awhile, we headed back out. We had one FP left, for RnRC. We took one last ride, and headed for the resort.

picture.php

Our room was on the first level, and right beside the courtyard with the fountain. So pretty! This was our first time staying in a Moderate, and I really loved having double sinks and more space. I also loved the New Orleans theming!

This was our view the next morning:

The themeing is beautiful!!! And that fountain!! That was right around the corner to the right our room we had a beautiful view of the Sassougla (sp?) to the left of us. I just can't get enough of that resort! And the Beignets are AMAZING.

Love the report thus far. What a gorgeous couple you guys are. And a beautiful family.

I know exactly what you mean about the guilt, we have gone on a couple of mommy and daddy Disney trips, mainly to celebrate our own anniversaries. And it always feels weird, but so different and you get to enjoy the other side. I am glad you decided to go!

And that story about the hat, and the stranger that bought it for the kid. OMG how can you resist. I am all  like a baby right about now. It is so amazing to see that there are those out there that are just so willing to share the magic and don't think anything of it.

Thank you so much for sharing that story. And I can't wait to hear about the rest!

Loving your report so far!! POFQ seems to be the go to resort lately for a lot of people!! It's so beautiful so I understand why! :)

I've gone on trips with my younger cousins before and I've gone on trips without them. Both have their perks but there's nothing like being able to go at your own pace without worrying about anyone else and experiencing all the "big kid" rides :)

Can't wait to read more!

Awesome start to your TR! Really wanting to stay at POFQ on my next trip so thanks for the pics of that!

How awesome is Fantasmic!? It's my favorite nighttime show on property. I always tell myself that I'm not waiting in that line to get in - even if I do love. And every time I get in line and I cry during the whole show because I just love it so much.

Can't wait to read more!

Day 2: Epcot Morning

Sunday: Our first full day in the World, and I thought I had a genius plan. We had an ADR for Kona Café, and after that we were heading to Epcot for half the day, then the Magic Kingdom for the evening. Our plan was to park at the Polynesian and take the monorail everywhere we wanted to go that day. Well…it turned out to not be so simple! This was the morning of the marathon, which I knew about. However, I did NOT know how hectic the transportation was going to be. I can’t believe that as much research as I did, I didn’t look into those details. A lot of roads were still closed when we headed over, so after being re-directed and then missing a turn to get to the Poly, we were finally able to park way out at the TTC and were directed to get on a bus. We took the bus, then took the ferry, then walked the path to the resort, which resulted in being 30 minutes late for our reservation (and VERY hungry by the time we arrived!). Despite the delay, we were seated pretty quickly, and we both knew exactly what we wanted. I got the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes. They were sooooo good!

picture.php

Filled with macadamia nuts, topped with pineapple, and came with a pineapple sauce. I also alternated dipping them in the strawberry compote that came with Shawn’s breakfast. He got the Tonga Toast, and thought it was really good. I tried it and thought it was good, but I’m not a fan of bananas, so not something I’ll be ordering in the future. I also love the juice that they serve at the Poly – I think it’s called Lilikoi juice – yum!

picture.php

The service was a bit rushed here, but we really didn’t mind since we were already running behind and we were in a hurry to get to Epcot. The food was delicious, and I would definitely have breakfast there again.

After eating, we hopped on the monorail and headed back to the TTC. What we didn’t realize was that EVERYONE was trying to get to Epcot to be at the finish line of the marathon. I wish I would’ve taken a picture, but the lines for the Epcot monorail were absolutely crazy! They had ropes up like it was a queue line, and we must have waited for 20 or 30 minutes. All of the families around us were really excited to see their runners finish, and were getting updates on where they were, so it was kind of cool to see and hear all of that. Once we finally made it to the park, it was pretty empty – everyone was over at the finish line!

I had gotten a new tripod for my camera for Christmas, so I set it up and we did a few self-portraits. Not the greatest, but it was my first effort with the new tripod.

picture.php

The first thing we did was head over to get a Fast Pass for Soarin’, then we walked onto Nemo. I know it’s not much of a ride, but I love this one! It’s sentimental for me – my son had a Nemo obsession when he was younger (he’s moved on to Toy Story now), but we all absolutely loved Nemo the Musical at AK, and loved this ride, too. I love hearing the song from the musical at the end. After that, we wandered around The Seas for a bit and had an interesting chat w/ the cast member at the Manatees.

Next up was Mission: Space – orange side. This was our first ride ever on this one. I’d heard that a lot of people get sick on it, and after seeing ALL of the warning signs along the queue, I admit, I was a little nervous going in. I don’t get motion sickness, but I do have somewhat of an issue with really small, enclosed spaces, and I had no idea what to expect. I figured Gary Sinise wouldn’t steer me wrong, and sure enough – I had nothing to worry about. I enjoyed the ride, and didn’t feel sick or claustrophobic. As we walked off, we did see one girl looking very woozy and being helped to a bench. If you get motion sickness, I think this ride could definitely ruin the rest of your day!

picture.php

After that, we headed for Test Track and decided to do the Single Rider line, to save a little time. We headed toward WS next, and some of the marathon runners were still coming through. It was really cool – and inspirational – to see all of them! I have no aspirations of running that far, but I have been doing the Couch to 5K program and will be doing my first 5K in April, so I definitely had a high level of respect for every one of them! My goal is to do a race at WDW within the next year or two, but I figure I need to prove myself with some local races before attempting that.

We slowly made our way to lunch – Via Napoli. Another first for us, and one that I was very excited about. I love Italian food, and I’d heard such great things. Turns out, it lived up to the hype! BEST meal and best dessert of the trip! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I had a peach Bellini and a pepperoni pizza, and Shawn had a sausage pizza. We ended up trading a few pieces of each, and they were both amazing.

picture.php

picture.php

For dessert, Shawn chose the Tiramisu, which was delicious:

picture.php

I don’t remember the name of the dessert that I had (should’ve taken better notes, but I was thinking I could find it on a menu online, but it’s not listed on there). It was an Italian name that meant something like “ugly but delicious”. Delicious was an understatement! It was cherries, ice cream, and had little cookies on top. WOW! I love cherries, and this was absolutely amazing. Everything we saw there looked absolutely delicious – I can’t wait to go back!

picture.php

After eating all of that, we were completely stuffed…and then they brought us ANOTHER dessert for our anniversary. This one was just a cookie and ice cream with 2 candles in it – so cute! Somehow, I found a place for a few bites of it. :)

Day 2: Epcot Morning (continued)

Our next stop was the Japan pavilion, and I was on a mission – to get a pearl! I had read about this last year and had hoped to do it on our first trip, but we just got busy and forgot about it. This was a really fun experience, and I ended up with a souvenir that I absolutely love! For $15.95, you can “pick a pearl” – pick any oyster that you like. They cut it open for you, and all the while, they’re making a big production of it. They taught us to count to 3 in Japanese, and after the countdown and the beating of drums, revealed my pearl. I got a silver pearl, which is supposedly rare, and I thought it was really pretty. They measure the pearl and clean it, and the whole process was really fun. There was a little crowd around the whole time, and everyone clapped.

picture.php

picture.php

I picked out a necklace to put it in – they had a pretty good selection of rings, necklaces, and earrings to mount your pearls in, ranging from very affordable to more expensive. I picked a cage-type setting, and they had it ready to go in just a few minutes.

picture.php

This is a silly picture I took after we got home:

picture.php

I love wearing the necklace and remembering that day! And for Valentine’s Day, Shawn surprised me with really pretty silver earrings that have silver pearls in them to match. He is awesome!!

picture.php

After quickly walking through the rest of WS, we headed back to Soarin’ to use our Fast Passes. Every time I ride this, I go in hoping to be on the front row. I had never been until today – and I was so excited! This was just one of those days when everything seemed to be going right. :) No trip to Epcot would be complete without a visit to Spaceship Earth, so we stopped for a ride on our way out. I couldn’t have been happier, and now we were off to the Magic Kingdom!

I have never had breakfast at Kona, but my gosh does it look amazing.

I think no matter how much we plan something always is forgotten. I would have known about the marathon, but probably wouldn't have realized how many things were closed and stuff myself.

I have always seen people doing the pearl, but have yet to do it myself. One of these days I am going to have do it. I love the set.

Can't wait to read more!

Ahhh…I never tire of seeing this sight! And it’s even cooler with all of the Christmas decorations! Notice that the cover on the Main St Bakery is all brown…a couple of days later, it looked like the store front.

picture.php

The first thing we had to do was go see the Castle, of course!

picture.php

With that out of the way, we were off to Frontierland. Today was the only chance we would have to ride BTMRR before it shut down for refurb, so we quickly grabbed some Fast Passes, then we headed for one of my favorite rides: Pirates! There was another couple behind us who were also looking for Hidden Mickeys, and we found a few in the line and on the ride. My favorite is the Mickey shadow on the wall that is cast by 2 cats.

picture.php

Because I hadn’t had my fill of ice cream for the day, I decided to stop for a Dole Whip. This is an absolute must for me when in the Magic Kingdom! I have tried the twist, the float, and the plain pineapple, and I think that the pineapple is my favorite. Now that I’m writing it, I can’t believe I had any room left after that huge lunch, so I guess I’ll just chalk it up to a lot of walking, and a little Disney magic! :ROFLOL:

picture.php

After that, we headed over to the Hall of Presidents, which was another first for us. Shawn had really wanted to do this on our first trip, and we just never made it. We both thought it was really cool, and the animatronics were really impressive. When we came out, it was starting to get dark, and as I turned and started walking, I got a surprise…

picture.php

picture.php

The Castle Dream Lights were on!! I wasn’t sure that they’d still be on; the dates I had seen online were earlier, so I wasn’t really expecting to get to see them. This just totally added to the magic of the week! I knew that it was unlikely that we’d be making another trip back anytime around the holidays, so to get to see both the Osborne Lights and the Castle Dream Lights was just amazing. I still get a big grin on my face looking at the pictures!

After ooooh-ing and ahhhh-ing for awhile, we headed back over to another of my favorite rides – The Haunted Mansion! There is so much detail in this ride, I seem to notice something new every time I ride it. It was time to eat, and dinner was Columbia Harbor House – another first. I was so enamored with the taco salads from Pecos Bills that I hadn’t tried much else in the MK. I had the grilled salmon (w/ broccoli and couscous), which was quite good. I will say that I have only started liking fish in the last year or two, so I’m in no way an expert. And I’m still pretty limited in the stuff that I like, salmon being at the top of that list.

picture.php

Shawn got the fried shrimp basket, which he said was good (not the best picture). We both had the Apple Crisp for dessert, and it was also good. We sat upstairs, where it was very quiet – only a couple of other families up there. It was a break from all the hustle and bustle of the park, and it was nice to eat a meal that actually felt healthy (mine, at least), and we both agreed that we would eat there again.

It was just about time for Wishes to start, but we knew we were going to be back to the park another evening, and tonight we’d rather get in some rides on BTMRR. That was a great decision, because we ended up having another magical moment – getting to see the fireworks while on the ride! There is just something so awesome about seeing fireworks while you’re whizzing around on a roller coaster, and it hadn’t happened to me in years (the last time was at King’s Island on the Beast, and I think it was probably 15 years ago!). The line was still short, so we decided to ride again. I LOVE riding in the dark!

After that, we decided to ride Splash. I had never gotten wet on it before, and we had ridden it numerous times w/ our son last year. However…this time, we definitely got wet!

picture.php

On our way out of the park, we stopped to admire the Castle some more…it was so beautiful! I was like such a little kid, those lights just seemed magical.

Day 2 ended as a complete success – a magical, happy, fun-filled success.

Great trip report so far! I have to say that your story about the boy getting the hat made me tear up. I have a brother with Downs so stories like that make an extra impact on me.

Also, I love the necklace that you got for your pearl. It's so unique and pretty.
