I am aware that this instrument is used in place of the bass guitar in various WDW park groups including The Village Beatniks in the Animal Kingdom.. Anyone aware of the name of the instrument???

Are you talking about the Zen Drum?
Its a percussion controller but it could be used to play bass parts.
I too have seen a number musicians around WDW play them, including the middle eastern band that plays for the belly dancer in the World Showcase.
