After doing the math, $80 up from $54 is nearly a 1/3 increase. So we can expect to pay an average of $2.56 per gallon up for the current $1.92

You know it's funny how we complain about the cost of gas but that "cost" hasn't gone up that much. I was looking through my memories book from high school and saw a page where you list current prices of things so you could look back at them later. Does anyone remember the price of gas in 1980? It was $1.16 a gal. A movie ticket was $3.50. So in comparison gas prices aren't really that bad. Just a little something to make you go hmmm.

Yes, and even at $2.56 per gallon the United States will still have the CHEAPEST gas in the world. I looked it up a year or so ago when prices started climbing up. If I remember right the average world wide prices was close to $4.25 per gallon.

I did that a while back with prices it Disney, there prices really haven't gone up that much over 25 years compared to others things when you look at the percentages.

Hey ACE, does your book list the price of a gallon of milk? Has anyone taken a look at that? Not that I'm siding with the oil companies, but if you think about how much it actually 'costs' to produce a gallon of gasoline VS a gallon of malk, a gallon of gas isn't all that bad.

No, it had a list of things and I had to put in the price. Milk wasn't one of them.

I will use 1982 for this since that is when EPCOT Center opened:

Postage Stamp: .20
Loaf of Bread: .60
Gallon of Milk: $1.79
Gallon of Gas: $1.19
Average Car: $5,967.00
Average Income: $11,894.00
Average House: $103,073.00

EDIT:

I will add in 1971 also:

Postage Stamp: .08
Loaf of Bread: .25
Gallon of Milk: $1.32
Gallon of Gas: .44
Average Car: $2,700.00
Average Income: $9,111.00
Average House: $42,500.00

So since 1971 the price of a stamp & bread have gone up nearly 600%, Milk nearly 300%, Gas is at 400%.

The closest I can find at Disney is 1979,

2-Day Unlimited Passport is $18.75 (one park)
3.5 hour guided tour $10.75

Only $2.56? Lucky! Here in San Diego, the average price is already well over $2.20/gal for regular, and they're predicting it to shoot up more than a quarter this week. Supposed to top $3/gal average here in the area before summer's out. So you East Coasters have it easy!

Just done the conversion for the 81.9p per lite the station over the road from me is charging for petrol - that comes out at $5.73 a gallon. So it could be worse for you.

I know it could be much worse, that is why I don't complain much about it. I bought gas yesterday at $1.79 per gallon.

I find it interesting that over a 11 year span - the average house cost doubled and yet the average income rose barely $2,000 - very very intersting... no wonder our economy is in such bad shape...

Similar thing over here. I have no idea how anyone can afford to buy property now.

I earn less than the supposed mean average, but I earn more than most jobs I see advertised. If I had to buy today I would not be able to get a mortgage to cover a studio apartment.

What cost $18.75 in 1979 would cost $53.09 in 2005, based on nothing but inflation.

I like how in the article they have a picture of gas being at $1.94 Reg

It is $2.25 reg up here in Traverse City MI. That is a nice price if it ever gets there again.

$2.19 for regular at 7-11 tonight....$2.36 for Premium

Stoped at the hess gas station by DTD this morn on my way home from work and the reg cheap stuff was 2.12 a gallon, to put that on the street sign they had to make the 2 in 12 a upside down 5. The midgrade was 2.22 with all upside down 5's.

When I had interned at a radio station, one of the shows that I helped out with was a car car show. The host, Neal Kwort, said one day that he looked at when the gas prices raise and realized exactly what they are doing and how smart it is. When they want to have a price increase on gas, say from $2.15/gallon to $2.30/gallon for example, they will raise the price over time to take it to around $2.60/gallon. The natural reaction of people paying $2.60/gallon is to complain about just how high the price of gas is getting. Then, the companies roll the price back down, but stop when it gets to $2.30, which is a real bargain now since it's .30 cheaper than it had been and people are happy that it is now a "low price" again. I thought that was pretty clever.
