Hello there, come on in. Join me, won't you? In my travels I've heard one question many times: "EpcotServo, just what WAS Mystery Science Theatre 3000?"

In short: The best show to ever air on TV.

In long: A show about a poor guy stuck in space being forced to watch horrible movies against his will, with his two robo-buddies, Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo. (Also manning the ship, Gypsy and Cambot!)

So now I give to you, MST3K 101.

Lesson#1
WATCH.

I've found one of my favorite out of the way episodes on YouTubes, so now sit back, and watch it all. (only do this if you have the time, NO STARTING AND STOPPING! It's full length, and boy, is it funny!

To introduce you the wide world of riffing: It Conquered the World. A nice bad little 50's sci-fi flick starring Peter Graves, and Lee Van Cleef. It's pretty bad, but it's Sci-Fi Drive In fare, plus it has an INCREDIBLY funny short before it, it's a great episode to start on.

So all you MST Newbies out there, get comfy, make some popcorn, and ENJOY!

OK, Servo... I gotta admit... I think they kinda jumped the shark with the first few episodes of the new falsh animation. I was all pumped up about it but I'm pretty disappointed. Have they gotten any better since the "fishing" episode?

Yes, I did think the last few were alot funnier. Though they've stopped doing for them for some reason...I visit the site because of all the great host segment clips.

(And as for Space Mutiny, it's a little more in the "advanced" learning of MST3K. Just like how "Manos" might be a little too tough for first-timers.
 That's also a Mike episode, and I'll have to go over the Joel/Mike issue a bit later...)

As for now, anybody new to MST3K, get watching that episode and feel free to come back so I can answer any questions...

I can't believe I didn't know about this thread! Glad to see the movie is going to be re-released! I just watched the episodes "The Painted Hills" (with Lassie and Pile on Peet) and "Eegah" (watch out for snakes) and I have a couple of the DVDs and the MST3K: Amazing Colossal Episode Guide. Yes it is the best TV show ever.

Ok, time for Step 2:

JOIN USSS...

Now that you've seen just what MST3K is, just do what I doooo...and watch the show! MST3K did have a nice long life, with TEN seasons worth of experiments! And each one is VERY funny. But you ask, how can I see the show? It's been off the air for years? Here's how. First, I'd start off doing a search on the YouTubes. Many good-natured Msties have put up whole episodes for you to watch in (usually) 11 parts.

After you've seen more, take the big step by going out (or ordering online) the Offical DVD sets. (Look for new sets NOT done by Rhino, but by Shout! Factory later this year.)

Still not enough? You can always fill in the spots by buying sets on ebay, where people have transferred their taped episodes to DVD. Sometimes they are very cheap, and you get a bunch of them. It's best for those early and later seasons.

And coming to DVD on May 6th: Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie! Where they riffed the movie "This Island Earth" on the big screen.

Now that you're all caught up, I'll let these great resources tell you the rest!

On our trip down to WDW I watched "Santa Claus" on the plane. Let me tell you, it's pretty hard containing your laughter on a two hour flight. I think this is one of my favorites!

Tom Servo: "It's the devil's theme, his goofy little song. Even though he's the embodiment of evil he still has a goofy song..."

I was watching It Conquered the World the other night, and before that some weird mummy movie about an alien mummy who is wrapped in shrouds that are covered with a weird fungus (amoung us!). Also Mr. B Natural.

I think the weird mummy one Tom Servo declared was the worst one they've ever seen at the end. Joel and Crow listed pretty much every other movie they've seen and they decided it was indeed the worst.

Fave rip? In a dark basement, ominous music "Hey, there's a string section down here!"

Fave shorts:

Mr. B Natural
Snow Thrills ("she-ing")
That crazy futuristic dream ("The bridge to the future's out!")
Respecting Your Parents
What to do on a Date ("Aww, she read the list too!")

And there was one with Cypress Gardens - was hilarious. Anyone recall the name?

My favorite episode by far was their take on the Mexican film "Santa Claus" which featured Saint Nick coming to Earth to battle the Devil....seriously.

You know, before i worked at a video store, I thought they somehow found "gems" of bad movies for MST3K. Turns out, there are tons of really horrible movies made every day.

I guess it's like theater - most bad shows dont make it to broadway, the same way most truly bad movies dont make it into wide release.

Then there was Circus on Ice which was hilarious. My other favourite shorts were the Gumby Robot Rumpus, Spring Fever, and Johnny Goes to the Fair. So classic...
