Moving to Florida??

We are thinking of staying in Florida for a few months during the winter to see if we really want to move from Illinois. We thought maybe renting something around Kissimmee? If things worked well the first year, then we would rent something on a more permanent basis and put our apps in at WDW once we get there. Whatever they have for us to do is fine, retail, resort, etc. (We know what the wages are).
Does this sound like a good plan? Is Kissimmee a good place to start or does someone have a better idea?
Would like to be close to WDW if possible.

Thanks

I think many WDW employees live in Clermont and it seems nice to drive through. I don't know anything of the economics of it though. It is somewhat northwest of Disney.

We moved our family here to Kissimmee / Celebration in Feb. 2007. We have had ups and downs, but come winter we are glad we moved here, from Minnesota. At one time there was 3 from our family working at Disney. Now one one, but we still love going to Disney.

If anyone would like some information please send me a PM and I will send you my email address. Yes the job market is tight, but where isn't it.

I look forward to helping anyone out.........

Just curious.. why did 2 family members decide to leave working at Disney? I know they had some cut-backs a while ago.. which was unfortunate for everyone involved :(

It sounds as good a plan as any. The difficult part will be finding work... any work. But, that's not to say it can't be done.

You'll experience quite a difference between here and Illinois. I'm an Illinois native and although I've been here 30 years, I've never had any desire to move back to the mid-west.

I don't enjoy hurricane season, love bugs or the insufferable heat during July and August... but I still wouldn't move back.

We just purchased a second home in Solivita Florida. That's about 23 miles south of Disney near Poinciana. There is a bunch of part time CM's that live there. We are looking forward to spending more time down there as the years go by. Right now it'll be for a couple of winter months a year, building up to six or more months a year.

I have lived here in Florida for all of my 30 (well, in 2 weeks it will be 31) years, and I have lived in several parts of the state, so I will throw in my two cents, for what it's worth. I spent much of my childhood in South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area), and when I left there for college, I vowed to never go back, and I won't. It's great to visit, but overcrowded and overdeveloped. North Central Florida (where I went to college- Gainesville) is very pretty but too slow for my taste. I live in Melbourne now, and spent a little time in Orlando before I moved here. Melbourne is by far my favorite....it is big enough but not too crowded and overgrown. We still have green areas and there is not a strip mall on every corner, but we also have everything you might need or want. As others have said, the job market in FL isn't very good right now, but if you have something lined up before you move, you don't have much to worry about. The housing market is great for buyers right now, and you can probably get an incredible deal on a great house (especially coming from up north, you will be amazed at what you can get for the money here right now). People in Central FL are generally friendlier than down south, too. I like that I go places and get to know people in stores and restaurants and things like that. And living about an hour from WDW really is amazing. We get over there about once a month (sometimes more if we are lucky), and it's really amazing when you stop and think that people plan and save for months, years even, to go there, and we can wake up on a Saturday morning and say "Hey let's go to Disney today" and just get in the car and go. The flip side of that is days like today, when it is beautiful outside and I am stuck at work, thinking how WDW is only an hour away and how much I would rather be there!! LOL...I am dealing though (knowing that we are going this Saturday helps me get through it).

All in all, I would say that living in Florida is really great. I would never leave...and Melbourne (and the whole space coast area) really is a great place to call home. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that I loved living in Orlando too. It gets a little crowded at times, but there are some really great places to live over there, and it is still pretty. And of course, you never run out of things to do over there. I live about 45 minutes from Orlando now though, so I feel like I am still there in some senses (and the trip over to Orlando from here never ever gets traffic-y, so I can get to some places in Orlando almost as fast as people who live over there and have to take the streets within the city).

If you want any more info about living here, I would be happy to answer any questions....Best of luck to you!!!

Funny bc Im dying to get out of Florida. I live in Broward County and its a haven for crime, I know bc Im in law enforcement. Dade and Broward County are horrible when it comes to crime. The people here are rude and constantly on the go and if your in their way, good luck.

WestPalm Beach is a really nice county

I'm also from Broward, and I would definitely agree with you. I have lived in Fort Lauderdale for a couple years now. Yes, being near the beach is nice, and the weather is generally great (except for the ridiculous heat in the summer), but I would move if I got the chance. There is a lot of crime here in Broward, so it's not the safest county. Again, I'm just talking about south Florida (I'm sure living in another part of the state is quite different).

When I first moved here I was so excited because I wouldn't have to deal with winter. The weather is definitely the biggest plus for living down here (for me at least), but it isn't something that would make me stay.

When I originally moved to Florida, I lived in Boca Raton. I agree that Palm Beach county is a lot nicer compared to some parts of Broward and Dade, but it's extremely expensive.

is there a strong finance presense in Orlando? I couldn't see having a job in any other type of field.

Unless you are doing corporate finance, there isn't much. Tampa is a better bet for financial markets...a lot of companies have offices there for that sort of thing.
