Movies that make you think

The Reflecting Skin

Baxter

Catch 22 (both book and movie)

Until The End of the World

Slaughterhouse 5 (again both book and movie)

...I can't think of very many recent movies that make you think though, perhaps The Truman Show -- but the connections to Plato's allegory of the cave are a bit obvious to actually make one think.

I second 2001 a Space Odyssey.
But with films you have to watch a second time to fully understand, is it a deep thoughtful flick, or just bad storytelling?

I had to watch LOTR:TFOTR twice just to get the characters names down. some of the guys will blonde long hair looked like the other guys with the blonde long hair.....

There was a french film I saw about a year ago, called death watch, directed by Bertrand Tavernier. it was in english, but done under a french company and french people in France... anyway. Harvey Keitel is the lead actor, he plays a guy with a video planted in his eye, so that he can follow around people without them knowing they are being recorded. it is done for a show that is much like our reality tv today, where he follows this woman who is told she is dying, and people see her dying days.....it was made in 1980, but it is a great film, and much to the likes of Truman Show.

anywho, upon seeing it a second time, I realized the subtle hints pointing to this one very important thing, which really changed the entire point of the film. (I won't post, just incase someone really does want ot see it .....PM me if you want to know....) and the cool thing was I figured it out, and got to talk to the director Bertrand Tavernier about it (he came into town for Roger Eberts Overlooked Film Festival, and came into one of my film classes)

that was a long story.

Pink Floyds the wall took me awhile to figure out because there is hardly any dialgoue, and the music tells the whole story.

The Matrix definitely....wasted 6 or more hours of my life watching that boring movie 3 times, trying to figure it out.

BTW...Back To The Future isn't that hard to understand once you get the basics. The BTTF DVD has a lot of info on time travel, paradoxes, the flux capacitor, whatever you need to know. A lot of BTTF fan sites have info too.

I agree, the matrix is probably the most OVERRATED movie of this century.

I saw the Butterfly Effect a month ago...at first it made me think. Then I realized that it was just a crappy movie that only made me think due to the amazing number of plot holes. Go figure...

You gotta admit the first Matrix was really amazing, and than they just over used the special effects and overdid everything.

Think how revolutionary the first one...Lets pretend every movie after it didn't use those special effects or parody it. Than it definatley would be alot better.

Just because I thought the Matrix was a poor film, doesn't mean that others do not like it. It is my opinion afterall. Personally, I thought the acting was weak, the action scenes too far spread apart, the pacing dull, and the cinematography to be basically average. You don't have to agree...:)

I thought the first Matrix was a great fun flick. The second was dire. Because of the second I have not had the heart to see the third.
