Mousekeeping

No, I'm dead serious. Don't tip hotel cleaning staff. Now if an individual did something above and beyond for me because I put them out or something.. then I'd tip that individual. But tipping because I'm staying in the hotel? No. Tipping before services are rendered? No. Tipping a department generically vs tipping the individual who served me? No

Pretty much everything about the way people tip 'mousekeeping' goes against how and why the principle behind tipping someone for service. And the idea that people keep tipping them only makes the problem worse as people become accustomed and then act like they can demand the tips. Housekeeping is something offered as part of the core rate for the room. I don't tip the electrician for ensuring the lights work in the room, and I don't tip the maid for doing her daily job.

I'm surprised there are not more tipping discussions on this board. Is that forbidden? Just asking. I know it's a bit of a hot button issue.

I find it hard to believe housekeeping would steal from each other. Especially on Disney property. I once left the tip on top of the frig/snacks instead of by the shampoos. That person came in to restock and took the tip.
I always leave a tip because making the beds is back breaking chore just in my own household. I dread changing sheets.
I also just overheard the housekeepers on staff at DL Resort this holiday Xmas/NYE and they were worried about having hours next week.
Most people i know would NOT forget to tip their bartender but never remember housekeeping at a hotel... How difficult is it to make a drink versus cleaning the toilet?
News flash. They don't change the sheets. They glance at the toilet to see if it "looks dirty". I could go on.

WDW Mousekeeping isn't worth a tip...heck, and I don't mean this to sound nasty, but I doubt half of them even deserve their jobs considering the effort they put into it, which is about equal to a Motel 6 or an Econolodge.

I don't tip WDW Mousekeeping. And I won't. I did, however, leave a rather large (over $200, if you must know) tip for my DCL Room Steward. Why? HE was awesome and went above and beyond every chance he could to make the trip better. The difference between room service on the cruise ship and WDW is night and day (and shocking). And there is NO reason outside of lazy management and lazy employees that this can't happen at WDW. None.

Mind you, I've done their job (even if it was for a short while). I know how irritating it can be, and how some guests are slobs. I get it. As a result, I try to make things easy on them. I only use one trash can so they don't have to empty multiple ones, I pile my dirty towels together in a nice neat bundle for them and put it on the edge of my bed, and I keep the room tidy and clean up after myself.

I also try to minimize my mess in the exact way you describe, but I've never had any problem with Mousekeeping. And anyone who is scrubbing my toilet, emptying my trash can, and sometimes putting a fun towel animal on the bed is getting a tip. If I can afford an overpriced Disney vacation (and I can more rarely as the prices hit the roof), I can afford to tip a few bucks a day.

If only they scrubbed the toilet daily, or really did any serious cleaning.

And this isn't a reflection of them, per se, rather they are a reflection of management.

Sit and watch Mousekeepers at a Disney Resort (I have)...many (not all) don't do much at all. And, a lot of that has to do with managment stretching them too thin (too many rooms) and also lowering their expectations (like the silly "green initiative" where they don't change out your towels (yuck) daily).

On the cruise ship my towels were changed TWICE a day, my bed was made mid day, and then turned down at the end of day, I got towel animals that would make the "washcloth bunnies" or "round mickey towels" at WDW blush with envy, heck...my Room Steward even noticed that I brought along a bottle of rum and made sure that I had ice in my ice bucket every evening.

Why isn't this done at WDW when the cost is nearly the same?

Do you tip the barista at starbucks? Do you tip the cashier at McDonalds? Do you tip the mailman?

Housekeepers are not paid the highest wages, but they are also not paid server wages (which is about half of minimum wage)...so, why tip them unless they go above and beyond?

I must admit...you've got me thinking...yes i did tip...no i was not satisfied with the job done...do i tip in every hotel..no
i guess i tip hoping for a little something special..i had a super housekeeper at the cabins once and the kids looked forward to what she would leave every day...
this last time at POR she didn't even put the little alligator sash (runner, strip...i don't know) back on the beds, she left them in a ball under sink...usually didn't get to room til 3ish

My parents tipped the mailman and garbagemen at Christmas. They had a private home.

When I had an apartment, I tipped the super and doormen at Christmas, but not the mailman. If I had a party, I greased the doorman's hands to allow guests in without protocol and deflect any complaints.

I will always leave something for the tip jar around the holidays, and for exceptional service during the rest of the year.

I do not tip my vehicle's service representative.

Valets, bellhops, bartenders, servers, food delivery, taxis, barbers, mousekeeping. All yes.

Now if you asked me why, I couldn't answer you. And it really doesn't matter.

I like this response. I tip all kinds of people and it doesn't bother me one bit, in fact, I quite like it. Especially the garbage men. Then there are others, say bag men at the airport, who it KILLS me to have to tip.

Why? I don't know.

I think your generosity is awesome, but jut be aware that it is illegal for a postal carrier to accept a tip. Other than that, all good!
