Mosquitos

Or when they land in your food while "getting together". Happened multiple times to me on one trip.

I've never had a problem with the loving couple wanting to share my meal, just the smear of lovebug guts on my hood.

While that is gross, they don't carry any diseases so there is really no danger outside of the ick factor.
Yup, just an annoyance. At Disney food prices, I'd rather not lend out my frozen Chai as a bed to a couple of love bugs. I scooped them out and drank it. But annoying none the less.

Well, y'all, a good part of Florida was/is swamp land and a bug paradise. Mosquitos, lovebugs, nats, sand flies (the biting ones that love to populate the beaches in Florida), termites, chiggers, fire ants (I know, technically not an insect, but a serious problem in Florida), etc. An entomologist's dream, Florida is.

The information I have on their pest control measures is about a decade old so things have most likely changed.

Plants vs Mosquitoes (citronella is the go to one of choice) are largely useless. You might be able to keep a single deck of your house clear with a few, but that is the extent of effectiveness. To my knoledge they are not used at WDW in any measurable capacity.

Disney does spray daily, (twice daily last I heard) but it is in the rivers, canals, retention ponds, etc to kill larva. They will also use spray trucks to kill mature mosquitoes, but avoid guest areas whenever possible.

They also use an array of traps and natural predators to control mature mosquitoes.

6-7 years ago I made a poor decision as I was out running in the Coronado Resort area and ran through a Bug truck that was spraying for pests, it was mid May and I figured Id just run through it...DUMB move on my part it was a much bigger area than I thought and had to breath to get out of it..made me nauseous for a few hours but at least I had no bites..

Yeah...that stuff is not pleasant. It is good to give those trucks a wide berth as what you physically see coming out of those trucks is only a fraction of what is actually there. The mist actually atomizes to where the particles are about the size of a mosquitoes eye.

Yeah, when we hear the "beep, beep, beep" of the county's mosquito spraying truck at night, we all rush inside. That truck is the size of a Ford ranger, but it sprays a cloud of pesticide the size of Texas. And recently, they've started spraying by chopper. "Honey, wake up! Why has a big black helicopter been circling our neighborhood for the past 30 minutes?! It's 2 AM. And there's no searchlight, so it's not the sheriff out looking for someone who robbed the local 7-Eleven. Could it be one of those New World Order choppers you and your buddies keep talking about?"

Hum. Might rethink my "there are no mosquitos at Disney since they spray like crazy" and bring a small can of OFF next weekend.

Wouldn't hurt! I checked multiple gift shops and they didn't sell it. I would have forked over a lot of money for a can of Off last week.

This thread is making me remember that we saw lovebugs everywhere the first few days, from 4/30 to 5/4, I guess. After that I didn't see any lovebugs, and the mosquitoes came out in full force. It was a lot warmer after 5/4, too.

I'm putting that travel size can of OFF on my list as I type. It's rained most of the week in Orlando and is supposed to rain most of next week too. After several days of rain, the little buggers are out in full force.

I was never bit. I just assumed it was 'herd mentality'. With so many people there, what are the odds i'd be selected for lunch. I am not surprised the parks spray on a regular basis. I did see minnows in the ponds, the minnows are 100% effective in larva control. Saw tons of lizards. Not sure if they eat adult mosquitoes or not. ...probably. Did see some snakes. ...I think they are just after the lizards.

Digressing; we saw a gorgeous orange and beige snake (corn snake) waiting in line with us for Expedition Everest. All the kids were playing with it. Nobody freaked out. Nobody stomped it to death for absolutely no reason. Felt good about humanity in that moment. ...suspect some kids enjoyed the snake experience more than the ride.

I got eaten alive down at the river at POFQ,,, the price i paid for smoking

And nature's way of telling you that it might be time to quit. I know, it's hard, I've been smoke free for 2 years now. But there are times I want a cigarette sooooo bad.

And the mothers were freaking out, I bet. Snakes are beneficial - they eat rodents, but sadly birds too. However, my respect for snakes didn't extend to the injured water moccasin I found in my garage one day. Animal Control sent out three people to capture it. Listened to them argue for 15 minutes over who would be the one to approach the snake with the lasso. Finally got frustrated and told them to catch the dang thing so I could use my garage. If only I'd had my dad's bb gun....

I'd like to share that I've used the "Off" brand, Deep Woods Insect Repellent Towelettes (they come in individual, small packages; it's a box of 20, I think). They work well, but more to the point--they are easy to pack, and fit in little nooks and crannies of your suitcase, versus trying to find an open spot for a can of spray. And, I'd put a few in my purse as well, because they're so flat and compact. So that's my little travel tip of the day! :)

I have a different rule-set with venomous snakes in populated areas. ...not to the snakes benefit.

Random factoid, pet and feral cats are a far larger danger to local bird populations than snakes. I'd bet a 10 fold threat.
