Mosquitoes at Disney

Hello :)

We will be heading to Disney World in September and I'm just sorting out our packing list.
I have been researching online how bad the mosquitoes are in orlando, posts range from non existent to epidemics. Just a little worried because when I get a bite I react quite badly to it.

Any advice on what to expect and how to prepare would be great, is a repellent spray all you can really do?

Also we will be staying at Pop Century, would asking for a lake view room be a very bad idea since they're drawn to water?

Thank you :)

I still haven't personally seen them in the parks. However, we got eaten alive watching Wishes one night from Wilderness Lodge. Not that I expect them to spray in the woods. It was a lesson-learned, for us.

Now any time I go outside at a resort at night, I say

Always works.

I will definitely try that, it might also repel by family though. So win/ win ;)

I'm a mosquito magnet and I rarely get a bite at WDW. Just a couple days ago though, my husband and I were watching Wishes from by Gaston's tavern and I got 6 mosquito bites just during the fireworks so that was a huge bummer. But I didn't get any bites any where else. If you do put on mosquito spray please don't be like the guy I saw at Fantastmic a few nights ago....he was spraying it on himself and his children in the seating area packed with people and at a level that it could easily have gone into the eyes of people sitting around him. I just thought that was a little rude.

Sorry to hear the little blighters got you, it seems they aren't appearing everywhere but they are about more than usual. Definitely no chance I will be spraying repellent in people's eyes, sound like a real inconsiderate person :/ like mosquitoes they are also about. Thanks for the reply :)

I'm also prone to mosquito bites and have a terrible time with them at home in Michigan. We just returned from an 11 day trip to WDW and I did not get a single bite, nor did anyone else in my family. I am pretty amazed actually. We took mosquito repellant with DEET, just in case, but didn't end up needing it.

The resort room we stayed in was near the parking lot rather than the water at PORFQ and we did visit all of the parks after dark on different days of the trip. I didn't even see any mosquitos.

OFF makes a really good spray. Its pocket-sized and called OFF Sportsman Max it is 98% DEET. Our facility has it to sell to the Cast Members. I believe that most retail stores sell it (like Walgreens). It is pocket-sized and is scent-free. Also, per the CDC the ZIKA mosquitos "bite" during the day, where regular mosquitoes "bite" at dusk. Hope this helps :)

Thank you for the reply, glad to hear you didn't see any :) Hopefully we will be as lucky :) I think we will also try to avoid a room over looking the water.

When we were down there in April nowhere on property sold bug spray at all. At least that's what the CM we asked told us. She did check the computer system.

My son gets a really bad reaction to mosquito bites, and he has never once been bitten at WDW. We go every year in October and stay at Fort Wilderness. One year we went in May and even then he was never bit. Luck of the draw maybe?

Honestly, I've been every year since 2011 during the summer and in November, ans sometimes in the spring months. I've never encountered mosquitoes like I did this past June visit. It may be as @Master Yoda said a combination of very wet weather and not enough of a long cold snap in the winter has brought Florida bugs out in droves this summer.
