The Fabulous Disney Babe
November 22, 2002
-- Michelle Smith

So, the word's out on Project Gemini, Forbidden Mountain, and Treasure Planet - it's nice to be excited about Disney's future again - it's been a while! A friend sent me a Hong Kong Disneyland t-shirt, which is now my favorite, but I haven't been really excited about it - it just seems so far away, I guess.

For the first time in a while, I'm excited: Tower of Terror, Rock n Roller Coaster, and now two big projects for Walt Disney World are in the hopper:

I have seen an opening date of April 12, 2007. Right now, they're working on Facility Concept, Creative Concept, Ride Concept and facility design. The preliminary ride vehicle concepts are due to be completed at the end of January 2003. Spaceship Earth will close at the end of January 2005; at that time, the new track will be almost completed. The building will be cleared out - I know there's film involved, as Theme Park Productions is all over this project. Salvage of the existing sets should be finished at the end of March. The interior and exterior (yes, exterior) track will be laid in two separate project parts in 2005. I don't know whether or not exterior track means outside of the building or not - the papers I have are not clear. If someone could clue me in on this, I'd appreciate it.

The Time Racers area looks to be either a pre-or post-show element to set up story or complete the experience. The backstory, from what I've heard, is about how knowledge doubles over time - it was once thought that mankind's knowledge doubled every thousand years until the Gutenberg press, then it was five hundred. Right now, it's thought to be every seven years, and in Time Racers, you actually go into the future chasing the doubling and tripling ad infinitum of knowledge. Like Spaceship Earth, it sets up the story of Future World, and serves as an introduction to that section of Epcot. Ray Bradbury's original concept script, while unwieldy, presented closer to what you'll see in Time Racers than what originally opened.

It's kind of funny - EPCOT was originally envisioned as a series of Centers - education, conservation and entertainment, among others. When the powers that be declared that only one park could be built, Marty Sklar solved the problem by shoving the Future World and World Showcase theme park models together. "There!" and EPCOT Center as it opened was - close to, anyway - born.

Now, one of the prospects being discussed is of opening World Showcase to the public after dark - no admission, and a separate gate into Future World. While it would be good for the managers of the restaurants there, Illuminations would be a real zoo at night.

Remember when I mentioned that Harold, the Yeti inside Disneyland's Matterhorn, was going to be setting up some cousins in Florida? I finally saw some photos of the Forbidden Mountain Model - it's going into Disney's Animal Kingdom's Asia pretty soon. No loops, but very large in scope...

not much more, but you can read the rest at:

Time Racers actually sounds pretty cool. It will be hard to see Spaceship Earth go but I'm sure they will aim to impress with whatever replaces it. After all, it is the only ride in a park icon (no, the Bug theater doesn't count!) so it is important that it turns out good.

I hope they keep the name Spaceship Earth for the structure. Most of the other pavilions have spotlight attractions that do not share the pavilion's name so it shouldn't be confusing. I also hope they use external construction project as an excuse to finally take down the Epcot sign!

Opening world showcase the public at night for free? That's insane. Bye-bye illuminations. Also, as if it isn't already hard enough to get P.S.s at some of the country restuarants. Besides, that would be kinda stupid...why would people pay for entrance during the day, when you can see it free at night? I would imagine Disney would lose money that way.

yeah, the WS thing is a bit disturbing. if they opened it for free during just certain nights it might not be so bad, at least one would know when to stear clear of the crowds. or even just for on-site resort guests (most have parkhoppers or AP's anyway) and make it seem you're getting more for staying on-site by getting evenings at WS for "free". i would imagine they would lower gate prices at EPCOT since you'd really only be buying admission to FW, not that it's very likely though.

Correction: Fab said that "Time Racers" will be a "pre-show or post-show area" for Spaceship Earth.

She DID NOT say that it's replacing the Spaceship Earth attraction in the sphere.

I, for one, VERY, VERY highly doubt that the attraction in the sphere will be totally gutted--it'll be WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY to hard to do. It CAN'T be done anyway.

Therefore, I'm agreeing the Fievel on this one.

yes, she did say Time Racers could be a pre- or post-show element, but she also said the following:

Spaceship Earth will close at the end of January 2005; at that time, the new track will be almost completed. The building will be cleared out - I know there's film involved, as Theme Park Productions is all over this project. Salvage of the existing sets should be finished at the end of March. I don't know whether or not exterior track means outside of the building or not - the papers I have are not clear.

-who is Theme Park Productions? what else have they been involved with?

For the last time...

No matter what some sources may say, Spaceship Earth IS NOT leaving! It CAN'T!

The ride inside isn't/was never meant to be taken out of the building completely...and the sphere is inpenetrable!

If the ride does close in 2005, I bet that it will be just to fix/update the attraction already inside...not to gut it completely!

Time Racers WILL be an "addition", NOT a "replacement", as previously stated.

Whats your source?

Every change at EPCOT so far has been a replacement. FAB is also not one to spread false rumors. I believe her.

This exterior of Spaceship Earth...

Sounds like that track around the WOM if you ask me! Heh..someone should get a picture of that track and see how it looks around SE...

and then it hooks on to the monorail line and zooms around Future World and goes underground, doing a double loop, up through the "volcano" in the Land...through the Imagination Pyramids...and down into Test Track. Underground - fasham into Mission Space, up again, and BAM into Spaceship Earth...

And then the whole park gets unstable and gets swallowed by a huuuuge sinkhole. :p

But seriously, it sounds like a thrill ride with this track stuff...and I have a big feeling we're going to see mainly film. I can almost bet on a loss of quality...but we'll see. Keep it family friendly, add MORE essence, and increase quality...the spirit...then all will be happy...:D

Sounds fishy too me...I think the ride will happen, but I also think that there are too many different stories out about this right now. I'm not going to believe some internet rumor site. I prefer to get info from people who know facts, and whole stories.

Sorry, I'm a skeptic on this one.

The other big news from her report is the long rumored "Forbidden Mountain" project.

I heard from another source that this is a done deal and that the coaster had already been purchased!

Wow...all these people with "Sources" yet rumors run rampant.

I don't buy it.

But Laughing Place isn't a "rumor site" and happens to have people with inside information just like this site and others.

When all of these sites start posting the same information it usualy turns out ture. This is what seems to be happening here. What don't you "buy"?

Names of rides might be known, but there will be different spin and details that are either not clear or totally made up to help sell the rumor.

How many M:S details that were said have been wrong? How many were known before the project was officially announced?

Well, you just have to know what information to filter when reading these types of rumors...

Your example with Mission Space is a good one.

However... go back and look at some of the first rumors from 2000.

From Orlando Sentinel, January 2000

It's nearly all systems go for Mission Space at Epcot. The shuttle ride, in which guests would experience G-forces, is close to getting final corporate clearance, Disney insiders say. Mission Space would replace Epcot's horizons pavilion and open by 2003.

Also From the Orlando Sentinel March 2000 ( Horizons was still standing at this point) This might have even been Jim Hill, though I'm not certain...

After learning about the astronaut-training process and mission preparations, guests would board space pods to experience the main attraction, Mission Space. Modeled on the next generation of space craft, the pods would take passengers on a simulated space mission in which they would experience g-forces and momentary weightlessness.

Sounds about right to me.

Just because you don't want to believe the rumor doesn't mean that someone is making stuff up to try to "sell" the rumor. That is not Fab's style. Go back and read some of her other updates.

I'm a little confused by Fabs report. She talks about placing all new track and says Time Racers could be a post show??? I don't get it? Why would a post show involve track? Is anyone else baffled?
