Monsters Unchained is a return to form for theme park attractions

Monsters Unchained is more or less the sleeper hit of Epic Universe. While Stardust Racers is a great coaster, and Ministry of Magic is fine, the vast majority of theme park enthusiasts seem to be in agreement (myself included) that Monsters Unchained is the star.

I'd like to speculate on why it is resonating with guests stronger than any other Epic attraction.

- It's not an "IP attraction" in the way we think of IP attractions. Yes, the classic Universal monsters are their IP, but they didn't create them, and they're all public domain. The attraction (and land) are not canon to any particular film or writing and the story is entirely original. The attraction is an original setting with original characters, and people love the characters. Ygor in particular is a hit because he is funny and well written.

- A strong emphasis on physical setpieces, animatronics, and effects. People are tired of screens simulating movement. The parts of Forbidden Journey that everyone preferred were the physical sets.

- Thrilling enough to be interesting, but not intense enough to be a physically demanding thrill ride.

- Lots of memorable and quotable lines

- Amazing queue, facade, loading area, etc

- High capacity is obviously a big one

- Just the right amount of cheesy. When you get over the fact that it's not really a scary attraction, you realized they nailed the tone they went for.

- It is too much to take in in one sitting, but that adds re-rideability.

- My only main complaint with the attraction is that there are some sights during the ride portion that you shouldn't see. However, this in a way does keep the attraction grounded, almost giving it an old school feel that fits with old stories and classic scary dark rides. (I'd still rather they fix this though).

I hope Universal takes the right lessons from the fact that most people prefer Monsters Unchained over Ministry of Magic.

I'm visiting Epic for the first time next week and whilst I am really looking forward to Stardust as a really great coaster Monster is certainly my most anticipated ride in the park. I am hoping Battle is better than I've been led to believe as my expectations are low.

Battle at the Ministry isn't a bad ride, but it has several things against it IMO:

- Esoteric and confusing story. You definitely have to have seen all the films and/or read all the books to know what's going on here. The attraction assumes everyone knows the characters and the full story. It also really needed a pre-show to help set up everything because even though I know the story and why Umbridge would be on trial, the specifics as to what was happening were still confusing to me.

- Too much of the ride time is devoted to stopping while characters in another lift deliver exposition to you.

- Too many views of green tile walls

- At the end of the day, it's just too similar to other Universal attractions. People are tired of screen-simulated movement and the constant stop-and-go pacing.

But having said all that, it's still a top-tier attraction. It just doesn't feel "fresh" in the way that Monsters does, IMO.

I maybe should have made this a poll.

Which attraction do you like better? Monsters or Ministry?
I like monsters better personally, but I think ministry is an better attraction overall objectively. There is not a single moment where immersion is broken on ministry and as you mentioned monsters has a lot of glaring sightline issues.

I’d have to disagree that Ministry is objectively better, for all the reasons I mentioned previously. It is more immersive, but immersion isn’t the only factor of a great attraction.

That said it is still a top tier attraction.

It's a bit hard for me to compare when Ministry always has insane lines. If they both had 30-minute waits, I'm not sure which I'd want to ride again first. But, I do agree that Monsters is more novel. My whole family agreed that it will be a priority to ride it again next month.

Ministry. Both are top ten worthy. Not strictly because I am a potter fan (which I am). I really disliked Gringotts.

I also had short lines for Ministry; Monsters they asked me if I just wanted to remain on for one ride.

I think I’m more open to mixed media attractions on my personal list. Which is why the objective package of Ministry hit so well for me.

Personally I just about prefer Gringotts to Ministry, but that’s after just one ride on Ministry but multiple over years on Gringotts. Ministry really needs a preshow or something to explain what’s going on plus the pacing is just too relentless. Monsters is better paced and has a clear introduction from Victoria. Gringotts also feels more clearly set up and reasonable paced

A couple of other knocks (IMO) against MInistry and in favor of Monsters:

- While the main big area of the Ministry cool is beautiful, the rest of it is very uninteresting. Monsters Unchained, on the other hand, has something interesting in basically every room of the queue.
- The audio quality on Ministry is not great. The dialogue is often hard to hear. The Monsters Unchained audio, while mostly coming from speakers right next to your ears, is mastered in a way that feels like its all around you and is crystal clear.

Monsters is awesome. The queue is so well themed and interesting in all spaces.
My only gripe (aside from a few sightline issues) is that Ygor was CGI. Having met him outside, it would've been nice to have had a real actor in the film rather than CGI.

Sadly, they didn’t have actors cast for that role until much closer to park opening, long after the ideo was already done
