If I am not staying on property, can I still take the monorail from the TTC to the resorts and just get out and look around for a while and then leave?

Thanks

ALL monorails are free to be used by ALL guest, despite what you may hear from some people. We take the resort monorail all the time becuse the line is shorter then the express monorail.

Some will say that CM's check for resort ID, but this has NEVER happend to us. and if it does happen. it may be once in 10 years. It's not a big thing.

We used to go out and do nothing but ride the rails and resort hop for a few hours just for something to do.

Have fun.

No worries. I've done it. The only time I've seen them check for resort ID is when the Magic Kingdom is spilling out at the end of the day and non-resort guests try to use the resort loop so the don't have to queue for the regular monorail. But if you have a restaurant reservation at that time you can board.

The resort monorail is supposed to be for resort guests only.

Disney doesn't seem to mind and doesn't monitor who rides which monorail.

My family always stays at a Monorail Resort when we go to Walt Disney World, and personally, I don't care who rides which monorail, as long as I get a seat after a long day at the Parks. :animwink:

We've stayed at all 3 monorail resorts and have never (every year since 1993) had them check for a resort ID when boarding the resort monorail. The only time I've had an ID check was boarding the boat that travels to the GF/Poly at the end of the MK's day. This boat is relatively small so I believe that why they check. Resort hopping is a great way to spend a day/night. On a longer trip we try to schedule a "hotel fun day" which includes swimming, water mice, DTD shopping and some fun on the Boardwalk or another resort for a break.

Officially, Disney transportation is included on all Disney ticket media. Disney is all to happy to have you enjoy the restaurants and gift shows at all of their resorts, so have fun exploring!

Back many moons ago they used to check for Resort I.D. when boarding the monorail. There used to be a CM at each monorail platform entrance (Grand Floridian wasn't built) that check for I.D. as you went through the turnstyle.

I haven't seen them check in the last 20 years or so, even more so now that Disney is pushing eating at the Resorts.

Why would they restrict monorail use to monorail hotel guests if they have restraunts and shops at these hotels that they want everyone to try!

We have never been stopped from riding any sort of WDW transportation, nor have we ever been asked for ID.

Go and enjoy yourself. Resort hopping is great fun!

Occasionally when passing through Orlando, my wife and I would stop and ride the Monorail just for the fun of it. She said when she was in High School she and her friends would just ride the Disney buses or Monorails when bored. We have never been questioned even if we were not visitors. We usually pull up to the Contemporary parking lot and say we were visiting people in room whatever and we'd park for free.

Fun entertainment if your bored and outa money in Orlando!

Of course you can. They would never check your ID. Disney loves for anyone to visit the resorts. You are a guest. You have the right to visit the restaurants and shop in the stores. It's just more money for the mouse. It's also a way to introduce guest to a resort they have never stayed at.

Never say never....In The Past, my family has had it's resort ID's checked MANY times.

It was always during the peak season when the parks were at their busiest.

They may not do it now...but they HAVE done it in the past which tells me it may happen again.

In all the years that we have been at Disney we have never had ours checked when using the monorails. Then again we have never used it late at night during peak season, which is when we are normally there.

Also we have never had our id checked when using buses, i think there are a number of people who think that you cannot use Disney buses if you do not stay at a disney hotel, it certainly was made out that way at times a few years back

I dont know whne this was. but we have been goign for many years (eaitly 80's) and always took the resort monorail and never was ID checked. It could have just been certain days (like we went during the MVMCP) and they may not have been checking during that time.

You are right. In the "old days" the transportation system was owned and operated by WED and you had to be a resort guest to use the system. They checked resort ID's on the buses too! After WED was purchased by the Walt Disney Company, the transportation system was open to all "ticket holders".

In short, now if you have valid admission media, you are entitled to use the entire WDW transportation system.

We started going in 1977 and almost always stayed at the Contemporary Resort, I.D was always check to ride the monorail or buses. I really am not sure when they stopped checking.

EDIT:

Added link to this map from a 1979 guide book, the first paragraph states that "All transportation is complimentary for Walt Disney World resort guest with resort identification cards[/b]

http://www.disneypix.com/count/fclick.php?fid=GuideBook01

After going through my old guide books it appears they stoped this in October 1981 when they starting using 'Unlimited Passports' intead of the A, B, C, D, E ticket books.

Ride till your heart's content! My only thing is that you don't ride them during MK opening or closing - as a courtesy to those actually staying at those resorts who are paying a premium for the convenience of that transportation. :)

If everyone had some morals and ethics, we wouldn't need all the rules.

I think Disney wants every guest, staying on or off property, to use the free transportation to explore WDW as much as possible. This becomes a free form of advertising for planning your next trip to Disney.
