Here is the hypothetical scenario being presented to you:

Disney is going to expand the monorails to include all the parks, resorts, and ancillary activities available in the Walt Disney World Resort. There is a catch however: The monorails will no longer be free. There will be a cost, with a payment system like the ones in place in the Washington, DC Metro and the San Francisco, CA BART, in which your fare is calculated depending on your station of origin and final destination.

IE- MK TTC to Epcot = $2/MK TTC to MGM = $2.35/Grand Floridian to MK = $0.35

There will be unlimited ride passes sold in 1-2-5-7-14-30 day increments will expire depending on the amount of days purchased, as well as prepaid loaded value cards with no expiration date. Unlimited riding will be a perk for selected WDW Packages (ie- platinum plan, etc). Children under 3 will ride for free, and the service will operate 20 hours a day (closed from 3AM-7AM).

Parking at the Magic Kingdom will include complimentary express monorail transportation from the parking lot to the park station.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that the hypothetical situation has been presented, here is the question.

If WDW were to announce this tomorrow, would you be willing to pay for the expanded monorail service.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, please, feel free to add your input or discuss this post :)

Interesting poll!

I would want to know if AP and DVC would ride for free or get some sort of discounted rate before I decided.

Interesting concept. I would have to say no because I think it would just be more confusing and difficult, so I would rather see it work the way it does now: where the cost is simply distributed across the cost of tickets (and hotel rooms, etc.).

I say no only because I know that the costs will already be funneled into the room rates for properties connected to, or on the Monorail line.

If you think about it, in order to ride the monorail in Disneyland, you have to pay for it.

You must show a valid ticket to the park in order to ride.

But I do not think I would pay, what with all the free bus transportation to parks, Downtown Disney, and the resorts. :xmas:

oh, FYI... I'm gonna start a second poll soon, continuing on this one. I am going to add several variables, like cost, discounts, and other variables to consider

No, its free. The valid ticket is just used for the tomorrowland station to make sure no one sneaks in the parks on the monorail.

I say yes, because if it truly was to become a fully functional mass transit system serving the whole park, then it needs to be treated as such, instead of making everyone pay extra on park admission only.

If Disney were to institute such a system, I think it would lead to a public relations nightmare not to mention confusion. I can see someone being extremely ticked off about paying for monorail transportation, especially those staying at the Poly, GF, and Contemp. I think most people would find this petty. First they pay a pretty penny to stay on property, get into the parks, eat on property, etc., now they would have to pay to get around via monorail. Would there still be free buses?

If Disney were to do this, I think it would be best to recoup the costs via other means (ticket prices, room prices). Also, what would the fee do to those resorts that offer boat transportation. Would the lines be outrageous for the boats just to avoid the fee for the monorail?

All the resorts? That's got to be some organization..
How long would it take to get to your destination if you're going through all the resorts... If the times are reasonable, I'd pay.

Keep in mind that if this were to ever happen, there would be no major alternative to the monorail system. The bus system would be almost completely dissolved, only noticeably present for some support work during peak times. You'd probably still have the boats and ferries, but only because some of those were neccesary.

BTW, Tokyo Disney charges for use of their monorail, and no one gets a discount. Not theme park ticket holders, resort guests, annual passholders, no one. It would be worth paying to use the monorail just to see the DVC members squeal...

This intrigues me. Think about it....having only the monorail as your means of transportation around the property (unless you have your own car of course!) You could have lines servicing only the resorts. EX: The MK Resort line = WL/FW Campground/CR/Poly/GF ending at MK. Then you could have the lines that go directly to the parks. EX: Epcot - AK or MK - AK (that would be a long one!)

Very interesting concept.

No, I wouldn't pay. There'd be no reason to. If I park hop, I drive from one parking lot to another anyway. I pretty much never hop via transportation. (And certainly not via buses!) The only time I use transportation is for things like getting to the Grand Floridian which requires a stop on the monorail. (We went to see the gingerbread house yesterday.)

If and when they do this the costs would be added to the ticket price as it is now. Remember during the abcde ticket book days you had to give them a transportation ticket, when they switched to the one pass system that costs was included just like now.

People that stay at the monorail stationed resorts also pay a premium for it.
Those resorts always costs a few bucks more then the others.

If they did do a cost system it would most likely be for guests staying offsite. The guests staying at a disney resort would get it included just like free parking and ealry and late theme park times.

Thanks for the input and great ideas.

They aren't falling on deaf ears for the first update to this hypothetical situation, coming soon :)

I would def. pay because I always stay at the value resorts, and during the summer heat, taking those buses were a nightmare! There were always long waits and the buses were overcrowded. Sometimes we would use the monorail for fun because it was so relaxing. I think it would also save time too.
