Monorail extension - $20 million per 1/4 mile

Jacksonville recently hired a seasoned transportation expert (he was responsible for the rapid growth of other cities' transit systems) for the job of CEO of its transit organization that runs the city's Skyway Express automated monorail system. Under his leadership, the city plans on extending the system a quarter mile to a series of mixed used developments (including an entertainment district) in the Brooklyn/Riverside area. The city currently owns the land for the rights of way for such an extension. The quarter mile extension and its new station combined will cost $20 million. This number is the conclusion of a study. A recent application for a Federal grant breaks down this figure dollar for dollar.

If anyone can measure the distance from The Land to the boat dock north of the DHS main gate (cutting through the EPCOT resorts area), we might be able to calculate a fairly accurate estimate on what a DHS monorail extension of the EPCOT line might cost.

You can measure it yourself on any mapping program.

It is also worth noting that Jacksonville's Skyway is nothing like the monorail in terms of construction. The trains are much smaller and lighter requiring a much shallower beam. It is also as dependable as a $2 watch.

Other differences. Jax's Skyway is a federal boondoggle pork barrel project which obtained funding from entrenched Mayor Jake Godbold and Congressman Charles Bennett in the 1980s. Did they really expect that in a city of 840 square miles that people would drive their cars downtown and ride the Skyway to Nowhere for .7 miles?

Disney, being a business, at least would do a cost-benefit analysis and determine if economically feasible to build a monorail. Unlike the Federal Government, they can't print money. (I realize the Reedy Creek Improvement District virtually makes them "Florida's 68th county" but printing money isn't one of their powers.)

Keep in mind, also, that it doesn't have to be a monorail. I would be estatic if they decided to build a peoplemover (much smaller, lighter roller stock). A peoplemover could start from inside Innovation (upstairs where it was designed originally when it was Communicore for a WEDway Peoplemover) to inside of DHS (west of Fantasmic) and could even be themed as an attraction like Uni is doing with Hogswarts Express.

That's what makes me most mad about the "new experience", is all the money they wasted on something that they haven't even been able to test successfully for almost a year! What a joke

We could have gotten either an expanded monorail system or a new land/e ticket rides in ALL FOUR PARKS and all we are getting are lame bracelets :/

It doesn't matter wether if the monorail expansion was considered or attractions were considered in te past. I am saying that overall if they didn't waste all that money on neg gen crap those are things we could have possibly got.

I am not saying it was this or that or bracelets and they chose the later, I am just saying my opinion from the money aspect of it..

So, another b#ll#cks thread about a non-existent monorail expansion, because there were potentially plans for it over a decade ago?
No, this is not about those plans, which, according to you, don't exist. This is about about the Skyway Express in Jacksonville and how real numbers can be derived from it to get an idea what it may cost if the same were done for WDW. You and others wanted hard numbers. Here's hard numbers.

No, we wanted the numbers from your supposed plans that were ready to be sent off to the "engineers" for their review. This is just another attempt by you go ressurect this topic on the thinnest of pretenses....

Well, it's now been moved to Imagineering so it can die a slow death here.

Okay, since this has been moved to where no one will read it, I'll answer you and not worry about subject derailment because hardly any one reads threads in this topic any way...

1. How was I supposed to get those numbers? I'm not a professional engineer. A study by professional engineers would be required and it would cost more money than most of us make in a year.

2. I was not preparing something for engineers to review. I never had "plans". What I had was a "concept". If I gave the impression of something else, I was caught up in my own excitement and I apologize.

3. Walt Disney was advocate for both monorail and people mover systems. I share his enthusiasm and wish to see his legacy continue.
