If you are trying to ride in the cabin of the monorail here are some tips:
1.) Each monorail resort has its own monorail for that day. Lets pretend that today the Polynesian has Monorail Black as its monorail for the day and you get on the monorail, in the cabin at the Contemporary and head for the Magic Kingdom. If when you get to the Polynesian there is a family that requests the cabin, you will be asked to sit in the rear because this monorail is reserved for this resort. I have never had this happen in my many times riding up-front but it can and does happen. So to prevent this ask the driver what resort (if you are riding the MK loop, resort line) this monorail is reserved for.
2.) There is a limit of 4 guests plus the driver for the cabin.
3.) To get to ride in the cabin, all you have to do is ask the monorail attendent at the station if there is anyone waiting to sit up front. If no, hey your in luck, just either sit on the special bench with monorail cabin pictures (there are 4 pictures, one for each butt of the 4 guests per cabin). If no, you have the option of waiting until the next monorail comes and ride then or taking a seat in the back.
NOTES: The cabin is usually quieter as you dont hear the mono speech. You also get a nice view of your ride and a good chance to learn more about the monorail system from the driver. Feel free to talk to them, they dont bite! Also, taking pictures out the cabin windows dont always turn out good. I have found most of mine with glare or a grainy shot of the window.
Dont be upset if you dont get to ride upfront at first, just try again next time. Trust me, its well worth taking the time to wait. I always enjoy the trip.
My other tip: If you are lucky and get the monorail at the right time and sit upfront. you can have the most amazing glimpse of Illuminations. Its not very long and your trip is pointless other then tha, because the park is closing but its worth it. BTW-It will be easy to the get the front for that trip because most are coming from Epcot not going to Epcot at that hour.
Good luck.
