Modern Disney stinks

Maybe (probably) this has been discussed, but I feeling terrible for families and kids today. In my opinion, today’s Disney entertainment is awful. Bad stories and story telling, void of good characters. Specifically, this generation of children are getting none of their own quintessential Disney magic and whimsical stories. What could or should be done to change this? Or, am I wrong and just out of touch?

I agree completely with you.

It starts at the top, they need to fire everyone that they hired for the wrong reasons. Then they need to start hiring people based on talent again and not their outside interests.

What a novel idea it would be to hire someone based on their abilities.

Disney has produced some wonderful films in recent years that have captivated children and adults alike. Frozen, Moana, and Encanto are brimming with magic and whimsy.

Based on actual audience reactions, I see no reason to feel terrible for today’s children, millions of whom have enjoyed Disney’s recent offerings.

Disney is guilty of taking fables out of their cultural contexts and recasting them into something else entirely. Fables use whimsical human-like characters and fantasy to teach moral lessons. Little things like "mind your parents because they are just looking out for your best interests", "dont accept candy from strangers", and "dont lie". Disney has gone into the deep end and created more irrelevant backstories pandering to groups that contextually add little or no value to the tale. Before the hue and cry goes up about representation, where is the last blind, wheelchair-bound, amputee, or cognitively impaired character that isn't either a plot device or an object of pity?

Most of Disney’s animated films since Snow White have starred human characters and taught lessons too complex to be boiled down to a simple aphorism.

I disagree. The only thing that sucks about modern Disney is the lack of great Disney villains. But I actually feel Disney protagonists are more interesting than ever.

I also think Tangled, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto all vary from "Pretty good" to amazing.

I really didn’t enjoy Raya and the Last Dragon, but I agree on the rest!

This is just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of people won't agree with it. But I think ever since 2018 every Animated Movie and Remake (not named Luca), has been either "Meh" or "Horrible".

The Good

Luca

The Meh

Incredibles 2
Dumbo
Aladdin
Toy Story 4
Frozen II
Onward
Mulan
Raya and the Last Dragon
Lightyear

and the Horrible

Ralph Breaks the Internet
The Lion King
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Soul
Encanto
Turning Red

Nah, Encanto, Soul and Turning Red are great.

I do think the live-action remakes are terrible, but I liken those to the direct-to-video sequel trend of the 90s and 2000s — terrible products will ultimately be forgotten in 10 years while the better movies live on to be passed down to the next generation.

Turning Red might be my least favorite movie ever made.

Soul is excellent, but it's not a kids' movie.

I don’t think most modern Disney movies will become “Disney classics”, simply because they are mostly sequels. They aren’t bad, they just aren’t good enough / unique enough to become classics.

Most of the likely Disney classics from 2000-2010 will be Pixar movies: Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Cars, Wall-E, and Up, Princess and the Frog likely being the only Disney movie to reach that status.

2010-2016 saw a ton of potential classics from Disney with Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Zootopia, and Moana but only Brave and Inside Out from Pixar.

Since then it’s been mostly sequels from both studios. 2016-current I think only Coco becomes a classic from Pixar and only Encanto from Disney… maybe Soul and Raya will get there also with some more time.

I think many of the sequels (Frozen 2, Cars sequels, etc) will remain very popular but I don’t think that makes them classics. They will just be seen as a continuation of the original “classic” film.

"Ralph Breaks the Internet" is probably the worst of the lot. It was just an animated version of "Ready Player One". Throwing in random well known IP's and Characters to fill up a movie with a lousy storyline.

Gravity Falls is incredible

Bluey is maybe the most iconically wonderful show since Mr. Rogers Neighborhood

Star vs. the Forces of Evil is wonderful

Miraculous is wonderful too, although I'll admit we were watching that before it showed up on Disney+ and I'm not entirely certain it started fully Disney

This is on top of the shows previously mentioned. Also most kids are obsessed with the Descendants series, which is cute, and Zombies, which I think could have been really powerful but missed the mark entirely. And they have access to all the old content too although the only ones my kid really latched onto are things like Phineas and Ferb and Home Alone and The Emperor's New Groove.

I mean, if it were that easy to write a great film, then every film would be great.
That's true. It isn't easy in the least bit. But sometimes you need a good dinosaur to get to a Coco. Part of the issue could be that the depth of talent isn't there anymore. Creativity and story telling don't seem to be the top priorities for Disney lately.
