The boat we were on that night was in fact similar to the one posted by Tramp (thanks :) ). Usually, the boats that travel to the WL and FW are those that would be most similar to the Friendship boats used at Epcot and the Epcot resort area. However, at park closing, they actually do run more boats, including two or three of those "smaller" boats along with the larger ones. The smaller boats supposedly can hold 40 people and the larger, enclosed boats can hold 120 people.

CTXRover, sounds to me like you and your family took the high road in not asking for compensation - more power to you! I'm very glad that no one was hurt, and I hope, as you do, that safety concerns are taken more seriously from now on. Life jacket locations should ALWAYS be pointed out.

That must have been a rough night for ya...but thankfully everyone was OK.

As for the overcrowding issue, I know that wouldn't be the case. Because of the whole life vest issue, they can only put a certain amount of people on the boat. They can't have any more people than life jackets on board. So although it looked like you may have been overcrowded, I doubt that you were.

So all CM's always follow all of the rules?

Interesting assumption.

Its a state and federal law, the CM who counted heads during boarding could be fined/termed if they allowed too many to board.

No they don't always follow the rules, but they know which ones you have to follow. Imagine if someone died on a boat because there weren't enough life jackets. Now that CM is going to be tried for manslaughter (or homicide). They know which rules can be broken and which won't be touched with a 10 foot pole. This is one of those rules CM's don't break because of the terrible consequences.

Didn't the CMs running big Thunder Mountain in Disneyland last year hear an unusual and unfamiliar sound just before they launched the deadly ride and launched it anyway, and thought that they would have it checked out after it came back to the station?

The way I understand it is that they were going to pull the train out of service after it finished the fatal circuit. One of the things brought to light from the investigation was that there was no official procedure to follow in case of a strange sound.

...an assumption nevertheless.

From what we've learned thus far, there's no ex post facto determination that the number on board did not in fact exceed the number allowed by such regulations.

Unfortunately, even if the CM did intend to follow that particular rule, there remains the possibility that an error was made unintentionally.

Many of us have had jobs that involve some sort of counting and can probably think of an instance in which we made a mistake. CM's are human, and make mistakes just like you and me.

I'm not blaiming anyone - just pointing out the fact that 1) we can't assume a particular CM intended to follow a particular rule, and 2) an error can still be made even with innocent intent.

Like someone else said, There are a certain few rules that Disney makes sure CMs follow, This would be one of them. If they don't follow it, they run the risk of having the Coast Guard ground their entire watercraft fleet for not following safety rules.

Also for insurance purposes Disney has an incentive to make sure the rules in that dept are followed....

Hey, since when is it not okay to make fun of yourself?

Let's look at the facts shall we?

Obesity is the 2nd leading cause of non-accidental death in the USA, surpassed only by smoking. In 2008, most doctors expect obesity to surpass smoking as the leading cause of death.

As an American, I feel that it's okay to talk about what is worng with our own country. This is the way it should be. Sure, no one wants to be called fat, but let's face it, it IS a problem, and Americans are finally recognizing the problem. Look at how well the Atkins diet has done! People are trying to stop the problem now, and that is good, but we're only a little ways into the game. :) I'm not here to offend anyone if you are obese, but if you are, please try to help yourself! I was in fact overweight not long ago, but I took control, and cut down on McDonald's, and I'm doing fine now. (Yea, even teenagers are getting overweight now... that's pretty bad)

:sohappy:

And just so you know, this was meant as a joke... obese people didn't cause the boat to sink. :hammer:

If you've been in the parks lately... you'll see it's not just fat Americans... it's fat people in general... of all nationalities.

I'm a decent sized guy (6'2" 200lbs) and I get squeezed out a lot by 5' people weighing MUCH more than me.

Couldn't someone invent a boat that weighed itself rather than through a headcount?
