OK after spending 5 weeks at WDW im finally back at school, but there was one thing wrong with my trip. That was the problem with the seagulls and other birds at Mk. They are annoying and vicious. Ive seen people feeding them, then surrounding and attacking them. I no birds fly south for the winter but i have seen them here in the summer as well. Was anyone at WDW over the Winter break and have an encounter with them? I have one story...... I got ice cream from Main Street...yummm cookies and cream.....i started to walk towards the castle suddenly over my shoulder came a seagull and it stuck its beak into my ice cream and snatched it from my hand, instanly there were 10 gulls and the cone was gone....it was scary but a lil funny..any other stories?

Hmmmm.... well, i heard stories of someone chasing seagulls and forcing them to run off this past weekend in adventureland.... Something about 'rats with wings'.... ;)

Seriously, seagulls like the mid 70s-80s weather, so when it gets nice n hot out, they fly north for the summer to New Jersey, or so it seems.

There are still some around during the summer. It seems like hanging around Frontierland and Pecos Bills more than other areas.

It was nuts yesterday. I have never seen so many birds out.

If people wouldn't feed them, listen to the CM that say don't feed them, or use common sense, then it wouldn't be as big a problem.

We were having lunch at Casey's one afternoon (in summer) and the gulls were terrible. A guy came out eating a hot dog & whamm!! A gull took the dog right out of the bun!!!

Well, I posted this same story in another thread, but here goes again. I was there Jan. 9-12 and there were LOTS of really big birds (not just seagulls) around Pecos Bills, and the french fries stand around Frontierland & Adventureland. They are a huge pain!!

I saw one of those giant black birds take a pretzel from a guy who was mid-bite. My boyfriend and I were sitting at an umbrella-covered table eating french fries and the idiot people next to us were feeding them. So, the birds were all around us just staring at us. They were on top of the umbrella, on the ground, on the tables next to us. It was really kind of like a horror movie.

I began to wonder what keeps them from attacking. All they have to do is just start pecking and that's it for me! A couple of times I scooted one of the wooden seats across the concrete so it would make a loud noise, and they would all scatter. But it wasn't long before they would come back. Now I never noticed the problem being SO bad in WDW, but what is the problem? Do they not have any form of pest control or are the birds just immune to it now? They really give me the creeps and I would pay Disney extra if I could go through there and start picking them off with a BB gun. (After park closing of course!)

OMG i was going to suggest an open range for hunters to come and kill all the birds........lol

I can tell you from personal experience...I was at the MK on Sunday January 18th at Pecos Bills. My family decided to sit outside and I literally had a french fry taken out of my mouth mid bite. I felt the birds wing on my face. Needless to say we moved inside. I looked around after that and saw that everyone had their food covered with napkins and stuff. The birds even tried to follow us inside when we moved. My mom physically had to chase several out of the dining area. There has to be a way to fix that problem. People are spending way to much money to be at the park and to buy food to have it taken out of their mouth in mid bite. After my incident I saw it happen to several other people as I was walking around the park.

Agreed. I can't remember how many times I warned people about that, was ignored, and five seconds later saw them shouting because the birds pecked their child's hand or stole their food. :brick:

Sea World is much worse.

Anywhere you go there are birds nearby, waiting for you to drop a french fry.

In the area where you feed the Seals fish, they will swoop down and take the fish right out of your hand.

I think my wife threw 5 fish to the Seals...and only 3 actually made it to the seals themselves..the rest were caught in mid-air by gulls or other birds.

In any of the outside eating areas you risk an attack.

:lookaroun :(

Sadly there are are LOT of selfish people out there. Shame the entrance scanners can't bar selfish or loutish individuals :animwink:

I was standing looking at Splash Mt. the other day with a turkey leg. a gull suddenly swooped out of nowhere and slammed clear into the leg, careening off it into the water.

I can get nuts. sure, they used to hang out only in Fronteirland, but recently they all moved into Tomorrowland as well...

Is there any truth to the "urban legand" that if you throw an alka seltzer in the air and a seagull eats it that they blow up? Hmmm......

welcome

Welcome to florida my friend. Notice we're surrounded by water on three sides and you can get from one side of the state to the other in no time, sea gulls comes with the territory when the sea is all around you and it's 80 degrees in winter.

Civileng, I understand that is is Florida and there are Seagulls o' Plenty, but there are also giant black birds too. And I have never seen them as bad as they were a few weeks ago. Disney has been great at coming up with clever ways to deal with nature, so isn't there something they could at least try to do to prevent birds from taking food from someone they just paid (and a lot) for? They may already be trying, but I don't know.

I've been chased by what I think were crows at the McDonald's fry stand in Frontierland. It's not just people feeding them, but it's also the fries and food that get dropped on the ground by guests. There wouldn't be so many birds if there wasn't so much food laying around.

Short of putting a mesh net over the whole park, I'm not sure what Disney can do about it.

Kind of like a Giant Mickey Hair net, or oh, how about The Mickey Show (based on the Truman Show).

I was a little disturbed by the gull going after a turkey leg. Wouldn't that be some strange kind of airborne cannibalism?

I assume the gulls are also bad in November?
