Mission to Mars - the old ride

Does anyone else remember the old Mission to Mars ride that used to be in the area that is currently being used by Alien Terrorrestrial?!?!?!? It was the first ride that I went on during my first ever visit in 1993. Lets say it wasn't fantastic but from there on in the rides got better and better.

It had a similar layout to AT in the fact that everyone sat in a circular layout - in the middle of the room was a round screen which was supposed to show the rocket taking off. The seats also rumbled. Anyway, just thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this fantastic Disney creation!!!!!!!!!

Take care
Dan

While I have not been on the WDW version, I am familiar with the Disneyland Mission to the Moon which became Mission to Mars which is not a pizza joint. :brick:

For it's time, it was cool - I mean it had vibrating seats that filled with air. It was very cool.

But in the end I agreed it needed to go - WDW got an awesome ride - we got medium pizza.

yeah i remember. it wa really cool. as you walk in the preshow was anamatronic misson controll. was really cool. you were supposedto be launched in an appolo rocket. agreed after the space shuttle been around for the while the rife got really old. it did need to be changed, but AE wasn't the answer. AE is terrible, and I think one of the darker attractions in WDW. I hope the stitch rehab makes it alot better.

Yes, I remember I loved it when I rode it as a kid. It must have been in '76 or '77. I must admit I have not yet ridden AE although I have been to MK many times since it opened. Having small children we've always skipped it. In fact, my 4 year old has been on every ride at WDW except RR (not tall enough) and AE.

Check this link out. There are some photos. Scroll down a bit. There are lots of good photos of other stuff too, not just MTM.

My wife is easily scared, so when I first went on AE with her, I told her it was just an update to mission to mars, but we would travel like the transporter in star trek. She believed me all the way through the preshow. I've never heard her scream so loud. I've never been hit so hard. To this day, she brings this up whenever we argue.

I've told her it is not like Disney will have a real monster that will eat people in their park - bad for business. But she is not convinced.

I loved M2M!!! I always thought that the animatronic used in that show looked an awful lot like the MC from CoP. Anyone else think this? Anyway, like I said, I loved this attraction! I read somewhere on the boards that the mission on M:S was a "Mission to Mars," and I'm sure it will surpass the original M2M by lightyears.:animwink:

Mission to Mars was a great ride! I loved the way the bottom of the seats sunk lower during lift-off and landing to simulate the heavy G-forces. The ride had an interesting combination of cheese and general fun and somehow it became an entertaining show. The pre-show video of the albatross (I think that was the bird, but it was a long time ago) making the crash landing was hilarious.

Believe me when I say that it won't.

SAVE ALIEN ENCOUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THREAD DRIFT.....again

I think Stitch should stay out of AE, the show is good as it now stands...all it needs is a few touch ups (not everything at Disney has to be a kiddie ride...there should be a balance).

Well, anyways...I don't remember M2M, they had replaced it when I started coming to Disney more often, sounded cool for the time it was running.

I remember Mission to Mars well.

I rode it several times.

a bunch of vibrating chairs with seat belts in a circle...lights flickering off and on...and a movie screen on the floor.

I also remember the intensity of the ride was dependent on if you got a seat that worked well or didn't work so well.

It was a bit outdated towards the end...but it had a degree of Disney cuteness and little kids seemed to Love it. The adults would just get off the ride and shake their heads like.."THAT wasn't worth the wait in line."

All in all...I bet when that ride first opened so many years ago, it was quite exciting for it's time.

While it wasn't very exciting, and it was a little run down from years of wear and tear towards the end...I'm glad I got to experiance this ride. I smile when I think about the memories of riding it and that's a good thing. We all need to smile. :animwink:

I, too, would prefer an attraction to a pizza restaurant. However, I would take the pizza restaurant over Alien Encounter any day. Alien Encounter is a terrible attraction.

Back to the subject though...I remember the DL version of Mission to Mars, but never rode the WDW version.

My luck that I always got the BROKEN seat!

BTW the pizza joint is pretty cool. Sit back listen to the music and EAT EAT EAT!

I rode it back in 88 and thought it was boring, but I really don't care for AE either. Neither one seems to have that little thing that makes you want to ride it again. Both seem to be out of place at Disneyworld.

Does anyone have a pic of it. I don't remember it at all.

I would like a pic also......

All it was was a circular room around a circular type video screen in the ground. When you looked that the center of the room you would see the burn coming from your engines and the earth quickly dissapearing as you leave it....that was pretty much how the whole ride was....

I think they will make a hidden tribute to "M2M" in "M:S" in either story line or something in the que/preshow/postshow, similar to other "new" rides that have some aspect of a "lost" ride in them?
