Well, I just got out the shower getting ready for school. My mom is always on the couch sippin her coffee while Im getting ready, and she is forever watching the news. Well, I came out all neat and pretty, and she said that WKMG Channel 6 News reported "They will be trying out Motion Sickness bags at Mission Space to give guests a peace of mind for what the ride is like"...

This will be interesting...

LOL....Jim Hill was used for that story. Sounds like a real crack group of investigators down there at Local 6.

But, admittedly, the point they quoted him on is correct with re to tying advertising to Mission Space, i just don't think it will be as horrible a PR problem as he expects it to be. But its similar to the insurgents in Iraq. Whereby better than 95% of the troops aren't affected physically(mentally is another thing) by them, the only press is about the small percentage of negative impact which is enough for the governments, and in this case Disney, to feel the heat.

As a footnote, i didn't mean for this to tangent into a political debate, so please keep it on Mission Space and puke bags and if someone wants to comment on my political commentary, PM me.

That is great! I can't believe they would put that on the ride. But if you needed that during the ride, would you have to tilt your hear forward to counteract the G-Forces. I would hate to see how vomit travels at 4.6 Lat Gs.

The bags can possibly cause a whole new group of problems...it should be interesting to see what happens though....makes the whole experience more life like even...haha

Should be good PR

Jim Hill may have miscalculated the effects of the barf bags on M:S and its popularity. What better way to attract thrillseekers than to have the distinction that the ride is so realistic that it's the first theme park ride IN THE WORLD where air sickness bags are necessary.

To me, it adds to the mystery, aura and e-ticket appeal of the entire pavillion. I would think that this development will attract and not dissuade potential riders.

I rode Mission Space for the first time last Wednesday (12/10/03) and I can confirm that there are "barf bags" in place. We joked about it. They are hanging between the navigator/pilot and the commander/engineer. I didn't eat before riding, so I wasn't worried about needing the bag:lol:

Excellent ride!!!! We rode 5 more times before leaving on Sunday.

I think it's gonna go both ways in that some people may be scared away, but others will try to prove themselves by going on. Only time will tell what the real effect will be, but I like it. I think it adds to the aura of MS.

I just can't believe MS causes that many people to get sick that now motion sickness bags are needed. I know everyone has different body types and different sensitivities to motion sickness, but I along with most of my friends (excluding my dad, but that's another story), had absolutely no problem on MS. I actually see advertising the fact that MS is "so sickening" that it needs these bags as being quite harmful for Epcot. There will be those who might be more intrigued to ride this "intense" ride, but I think there will be more who are scared off from it. I know after reading all the new warning signs and now this bag thing that I would have seriously consider not doing it, but luckily I rode it back in the preview stage without most of these warnings and had no problem. I guess being a one of a kind ride can be tough, since you really don't know how you will do on it until you've tried it.

Worse off, let's say you do need the bag during the ride, now you have to look down and grab the bag and try to get your "stuff" into the bag which would requiring looking down, only compounding the motion sickness problem as you need to keep looking at the screen.

I guess though it does have the potential to be beneficial if the feeling comes over you as the ride ends. It is more comforting to be able to control your, for lack of better terms, vomit, than go all over the pod or floor. It may be too soon and wrong of me to think this, but I hope the bags have an MS logo on them :lookaroun

I guess the bags might be a good idea for a VERY small percentage of people. But I also hope that this doesn't keep people away from this great attraction. I still think that M:S is actually quite tame.

Yea, I guess for those who might need the bags its a pretty good idea. As I said before, when you have to throw-up, it is much less pshychologically disturbing if you can control it in some way into a container then to just go all over the floor. It makes you feel guilty in a way. I just think advertising the installation of these bags might scare people off from riding it who might otherwise have been fine on it. I didn't find MS tame, but I didn't find it sickening at all, rather its was kind of cool.

I love though how they try to put the spin on the whole motion sickness thing as being part of the astronaut training as many real astronauts get this feeling during training and actual flight

What's amazing is that anyone with a tendency towards motion sickness would go on that ride in the first place. The whole attraction is covered with warnings for people like that, both visual and audio.

Also, they tell you during the ride not to look around, but to look straight ahead to minimize the chances of motion sickness.

If, after all the warnings and instructions someone gets on the ride and barfs, they should have to wear the barf bags over their heads.

I pulled one of the bags out right before riding MS on Saturday and NO there is not a logo on the bag.

I myself felt dizzy during the launch, but I just blinked my eyes a few times and I was okay.

I know of quite a few people who did not ride it because they heard it was too rough?!.

The report featured Jim Hill, who runs a Web site devoted to Disney theme parks.

Hill claims Disney's imagineers struggled with the motion sickness problem even before the ride opened and some believe the threat of sickness could hamper the ride's success.

Hill claims... Hill claims...............

WDI has never been struggling with motion sickness..

The bags have been installed by "popular demand"...
To ease things down for the guests... and on the other hand, to push the "intensness" of the ride...

Look dad, there are even "barf bags" installed... It must be some hell of a ride...

It's typical Jim Hill... Hearing bells ringing...

Why didn't Channel 6 news make simple phone call to WDI, Celebration or Glendale, to verify this story, especially when it from Hill who has only a few CM-friends at WDW...

Here's a question i just thought of.

Has anyone, who's afflicted by motion sickness on other things (attractions, aircraft, watercraft etc.) that typically takes Dramamine or another relaxer used it on Mission Space to any degree of success?

Or are the effects so different from those other activities that it wouldn't help in anyway?

Yep, I just heard this on the 11pm news broadcast in Naples, FL. They also said that less the 1% of the people who ride Mission: SPACE get sick.

:hurl: :hurl: :hurl: <--- make that a full 1% now ;)
