Missing road signs at WDW

Not sure if this has been pointed out here already, or if anyone else has noticed this before. I certainly noticed this for as long as I can remember (at least for the past 3 years) since we really started driving around WDW on our own.

If you are driving either from Epcot or the Magic Kingdom (Transportation Center) and you are going to Downtown Disney, if you follow the Disney signs, you'll be on Epcot Center Drive. You then exit right onto an exit ramp, and this is where it gets "interesting". When you take that exit, you first see this sign on the left side of the exit ramp.

So from that sign, you will make a left turn to go to Downtown Disney, so you make sure you're in the left lane as you approach the upcoming intersection/lights. But wait, as you approach the intersection, there's another sign, this time on the right side of the exit ramp.

It now says that you can go forward to go to Downtown Disney! Well, ok, that's not unusual since there usually is more than one way to get around at WDW. Since you saw the other sign first and you're already in the left lane, you'll make that left turn. This turn will put you on the "Overpass Road". So far so good. This will get you to the T-junction joining Overpass Road and Bonnet Creek Parkway. This is where, if you do not know where you are, you're left hanging with no other instructions on where to go. At that T-junction, this is what you see.

There is only one street sign indicating the direction to the left, which would be to Old Key West, Saratoga Spring, Port Orleans, and golf courses. There's no indication here that if you want to go to Downtown Disney, that you should turn right. I thought this is rather strange that Disney didn't follow through with their signs here. I've noticed this for quite a while, and I would think that someone with WDW would have noticed this omission and corrected it.

This is a very frequent route that we take since we used to stay at the Downtown Disney resort area on Hotel Plaza Blvd before we became DVC members. Even now, it is a frequent route since we stay either at OKW or SSR. So that's why I've noticed this "missing" sign for what seems like forever. I've seen vehicles at that intersection appearing to be unsure of where to turn (they were on the left lane and then suddenly decided to turn right), which I attributed to the lack of signs.

BTW, if you happened to have gone forward instead on the exit ramp rather than turning left, you'd be on Backstage Lane that will get you to the Buena Vista Dr. Turning left will get you to Downtown Disney, and there's a sign to indicate this.

So, do you think it is worthwhile to contact WDW to point this out to them?

Yeah, it's been that way for a while. Not sure who you'd contact, though guest communications would probably forward it on to the appropriate department. Back when I was first trying to get familiar with the property, I actually followed the sign that pointed left, then immediately felt very lost. Upon further inspection, the sign actually points to the Downtown Disney Resort Area, and the subsequent signs really do point to the Downtown Disney resorts. However, this could be (and has been) very misleading to guests who are too busy driving to notice the "resorts" part on the sign.

The first sign was for "Downtown Disney Resort Area", if you wanted to go to "Downtown Disney" you should have stayed straight not taken a left.

I do agree that there should be more signs telling you how to get back on track.

But what is a "Downtown Disney Resort Area"? SSR, OKW, and Port Orleans are considered as that? That would be a bit confusing since from what I've gathered, "Downtown Disney Resort Area" would also be appropriate to be designated to the hotels on Hotel Plaza Blvd. At the very least, it can create that kind of ambiguity for someone staying at one of those hotels. So the sign is still missing since they would still want to make a right at that intersection to get to those resorts.

Well, maybe when I get my act together, I'll contact someone at WDW and point this out.

Just FYI, if you follow the signs to OKW / SSR, you will be heading towards DTD The Marketplace. I know they need another sign there and it would make it much easier.

Yup. That's how we get to DD when we're at either SSR or OKW. But I don't think they want that kind of traffic going through that stretch of road, especially with golfers crossing that street frequently. Besides, I don't think it is any shorter than going the other way.

The lack of signs and signs that are just plain wrong is so extreme at Disney I try not to use them at all. Too often parks have multiple ways of entering them from any given point and when you only get one sign and no follow ups you'll just get lost. As I recall I used to make the mistake of believing the sign when you leave MK to turn right for Downtown Disney... the only problem is Disney Quest is easier to get to if you use the second right turn for Downtown Disney that is closer to the Tower of Terror billboard (yet they don't explain that).

I'm fully convinced that Disney makes it difficult to find your way around in hopes of getting you to stay on site and not venture out.

Wait, what?

I have yet to remember a time where I completely got lost because of their signs lacking. I always thought they were pretty useful.

They usually are. That is why this is such a glaring omission to me. I certainly got confused the firsttime I drove through this route several years ago. Luckily, I kinda knew where I was at that moment and knew to make a right turn at that junction. Someone who is there for the first time, or don't go to WDW that often, might not be so lucky.

It would be nice if they would at least put signs at all the intersections so you knew what road you were about to turn on or pass by... Give people that information and a map and you don't need the other signs.

Then again, it might be because I frequent the World so much?

And I have yet to remember a trip when I haven't gotten lost somewhere on the property. Maybe its me, but I find Disney's road signage really lacking in continuity, and the purple signs are tough to read from a distance at night. Last year, I took a wrong turn and wound up in the bus pick up area at MK!

I'm another one that agrees that the area is confusing. However, looking at your pics, they do make sense when I have time to think about them (they never did when I'm driving through). The DTD Resort Area is just resorts that Disney owns. POR, OKW, SSR, and POFQ are all Disney owned of course and that's what's meant by the first sign. You can go to disneyworld.com to see which hotels fit in which groups.

So yes, confusing but 100% correct in Disney's eyes.

Yeah you definitely have to pay attention between "resort area" and the actual place... same with Epcot... there's the Epcot Resort Area and then just Epcot... and its two COMPLETELY different exits.

The thing that really confused me when I first started making my way around, was when you DO make that left to go over the overpass, there's an exit ramp to the right that you can take to get back on Epcot Center Drive/536 that is really confusing... and if you don't watch yourself, you'll end up back over there instead of going over the overpass which is where you need to be!
