Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run - Ride/Queue Details and Discussion

It doesn’t take an F+ Ticket ride to make Star Tours obsolete, just another Star Tours equivalent. In that sense I do think Smuggler’s Run makes Star Tours redundant. And though I’d say MFSR’s ride itself is inferior to Star Tours, the massive sets, detail, and theatrics of the queue and cockpit are far superior and make Star Tours look very quaint by comparison.

My take on the way “obsolete” was used by insiders was that Falcon ride would be so great that Star Tours would be obsolete. I’m pretty sure that they weren’t trying to say that the Falcon is obsolete because their would be two Star Wars simulators. It was a comment on quality. I would wager that insiders at the time thought that the ride experience would be a more dynamic than the end result. Now of course, I believe it very well could be redundant either way for the reason you say but I don’t think that’s how insiders meant it. Then again, Falcon is a video game and Star Tours has the movie quality CGI. Not to mention it can focus on stories outside the new trilogy so maybe it’s not obsolete just yet.

Hearing you say the ride experience is inferior to Star Tours is a bummer for me because what I want most out of a ride is to have fun, in whatever way that particular attraction delivers it.

So as far as I can tell, the only source of the "3 different missions" info was this video:

The video references confirmation of 3 missions from "Making Star Wars" and later confirmed by Entertainment Weekly

In it they say the missions are as follows:
  • Race on Corelia
  • Mission to First Order Shipyard on Corelia
  • Steal a piece of cargo that's guarded by a giant alien monster
I guess we're doing the Mission to the first order shipyard?

Edit: Here is the "confirmation" on Entertainment Weekly: https://ew.com/movies/2018/11/17/video-millennium-falcon-smugglers-run-ride-star-wars-theme-park/

Edit #2: The original "source": https://makingstarwars.net/2018/10/...sions-hondo-early-access-to-batuu-on-the-way/

Hey @marni1971 any insight here?

Maybe they decided to hold back a couple of the missions when it became clear that ROTR would be significantly delayed. If they re nearing the end of 2019 and it’s still not ready they can stir up some excitement with the announcement of a new mission.

Or it could have been the plan all along. It would be a waste to introduce the Falcon with 2 or 3 missions at the same time. People are hyped enough off the fact that this land and attraction are open.

I would also think you don't want to start off with the three scenarios from the start. You have more than enough people wanting to ride it without the extra incentive for re-ridability. If someone gets back in the line for a 4 hour wait hoping to get a different scenario and then doesn't... that's a lot of disappointment because of the time investment.

Does the current description meet any of the three from what the Making Star Wars article said?

  • Mission Scenario One: Hondo gets you involved in a race on Corellia that he’s sure you can’t lose with the Millennium Falcon.
  • Mission Scenario Two: Hondo sends you to the First Order Shipyard on Corellia, possibly on a mission for the Resistance.
  • Mission Scenario Three: Your crew will have to steal some piece of cargo but the cargo is guarded by a giant monster similar to The Maw from Solo: A Star Wars Story and you’ll have evade the creature like the mythic heroes stealing the treasure from the sleeping dragon. Spoiler: The dragon wakes up.
Does the ride take place on Corellia?

Haven’t ride it myself yet, but I believe it does take place on Corellia. I’ve heard that this is the first time we’ve seen Corellia in the sequel era.

Also, I’m not sure if your familiar with Making Star Wars or not, but they’re the real deal. Not saying that means this is absolutely true, but they do have legitimate sources in Lucasfilm. They managed to leak the entire plot of TFA before it was released.

Hey @marni1971 any insight here?

Also, here is some real evidence for the alien monster mission provided WDI:
380135

This is a piece of concept art Disney released at Galactic Nights in December 2017. They referred to it as a place we “haven’t seen” before. And they also said that this was “just one of the missions you might find yourself faced with”.

Hey that’s my video @RSoxNo1!

Yeah, Making Star Wars and Entertainment Weekly are the sources on the three missions. Combined with the test footage and concept art it seems to all line up. Not to mention that Anthony Breznican From EW got his info straight from the source.

Not releasing all 3 missions at once makes total sense. They’ll roll out new missions strategically to encourage repeat visits.

Having the missions selected based on the riders performance on previous missions (via MagicBands) would be awesome, with the missions getting more challenging as you complete more of them. Although I could see this being hard to implement in cases where a first time rider is paired with some experienced riders.

I just want to do the Kessel Run man.

The ride sends you to Corellia to steal coaxium, just like in the movie Solo. I wouldn't call it a shipyard though.

Another observation--the pilot controls are very sensitive, with a slight lag. This causes you to oversteer and zigzag back and forth. I think you would get better with multiple rides as pilot, or even piloting after watching someone else. And be careful returning to Bantu at the end. You come out of hyperspace heading straight for a spire, so the left pilot needs to immediately steer around it. Right pilot is vertical controls and hyper speed.

I think the section of the ride where they are getting coaxium off of the train is the shipping yard.

Thanks for the piloting tips!

Nice breakdown. I’ll just add left pilot needs to be ready to press the breaks when following the that train in the tunnel closely around the middle of the ride. Do you have a better way of explaining it?

The console doesn't actually have a breaks feature. Think of the drop as a cutscene between the ride's two halves, in that you're really only going to watch the action as it unfolds.

In my three rides, I never heard an explanation of how to hit the brakes, but that would have prevented significant damage to the poor Falcon.

The brakes are activated by the round flashing red button on the left pilots console.
