Military discount question

My father is coming with us on our next trip and wants to get his own room. He served in the Vietnam War but was discharged after that. My sister believes if he just books a room with the military discount and pays in advance he won't have any problems upon arrival. He doesn't have a military I.d. - which is why I foresee a problem. Anyone have any experience/knowledge with millitary discounts? I do not want my father starting a Disney vacation with a problem. Thanks for any help.

From what I have read he will need a military ID of some type. I would have him call Shades of Green, they may just want to see a copy of his DD Form 214. Thank him for his service

We are going on our trip using military discount, you have to be active or retired in order to get the discount and you have to have a valid military id stating that when checking in, even if you've paid in advance and used online check-in. My dad also served in vietnam and since he didn't retire from the military he wouldn't be eligible.

Sorry, but he will not be eligible for the military discount unless he is currently serving in active duty status, active reserve status, national guard OR retired military and has a military ID.

Usually, most of the time Shades of Green is only open to active and RETIRED service members plus DoD employees. However, last year and I think for a short period this year, they had a "Salute to Veteran" month in which veterans who did not retire but served could stay at SoG. All that was required at check in was the DD214. Of course it is hard to plan a trip around something that happens occasionally but if you keep an eye out there may be a future opportunity. We just got back from SoG. My husband is retired military. Our usual rate is $131. The first part of October they had a flat rate regardless of rank; $89 per night. We took too rooms for a 4 day weekend.

Do you know when or at least how to find out when this is available?

They've been allowing veterans to stay in Sept and Jan for some time now. Not just "retired" veterans. Just call them and they'll give you the details. There is also a military disney tips blog that keeps up with all the military discounts/news. The blogger's name is Steve and if you google military disney tips you'll find it.

Thanks! We are trying to plan another trip for 2013 and it will be the first "unactive" trip! So cost is important!
