Might need a refund

So I just got some very bad news, my family lives in the Orlando area and we were going to visit them on our trip, but I just got the news that both my grandparents are gravely ill and I need to go see them right away. So I'm leaving for Florida on Wednesday, but if I need to go back two more times this year for funerals I would be unable to go on vacation in November.

When would I need to cancel? Would I be able to get a full refund? How does that work? Thanks.

If you booked a package you can cancel with a full refund [except for airfare if you booked flights - that depends on the airline] up to 45 days prior to arrival. If you booked room-only, you can get a full refund up to 5 days prior to arrival.

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandparent's illness. As Monty said, it really depends on your package. If you made your reservations through Disney, they typically send you a copy of the vacation package agreement. That should hopefully tell you what the cancellation policy for your package is. If you used a travel agent, give them a call and see what they say.

I found Disney's cancellation policies:

Room Only Reservation

*Carries a 5-day cancellation policy. If the Guest cancels within 4-0 days prior to arrival, they will forfeit one night’s lodging. (This policy may differ if booked online, based on the offer.)

*Carries a no penalty modification policy. Guests may modify this reservation to another "Room only" reservation (change dates, resorts, party mix, etc.) without penalty. Guest can easily modify to other "Room only" offers such as Passholder or FL Resident offers. On modifications the monies paid stay with the reservation. (Note to change to a Vacation Package or a non-Disney Resort will require a cancellation / refund and rebooking with a new deposit. Cancellation penalties may apply.)

*If Guest chooses to add airfare only retail air is available, and must be paid in full within 24 hours of booking. All retail air is non-refundable, non-changeable.

*If Guest chooses to add MYW Tickets, they must be paid in full at time of purchase, and may be non-refundable depending on type.

Basic Package Reservation

*Requires a deposit of only $200 (regardless of total package price) within 14 days of booking if more then 59 days prior to arrival. Full balance must be paid if booked within 45 days prior to arrival.

*Remaining Balance due 45 days prior to arrival.

*Carries a 45-day cancellation policy. If the Guest cancels within 44 – 6 days prior to arrival, they forfeit a $100 penalty. If the Guest cancels within 5 – 0 days prior to arrival, they forfeit a $200 penalty. Guest also forfeits the cost of any non-refundable components (i.e. air, insurance.)

*Carries a 45-day modification policy. If the Guest modifies their package in any way within 44 – 0 days prior to arrival there is a $50 change fee. This fee is waived if change results in a higher package price.

*Carries a 14-day special handling policy. If the Guest modifies their package in any way within 14 – 0 days prior to arrival there is a $10 fee for postage. This fee cannot be waived even if nothing is sent to the Guest. (Documents must still be sent to the Resort, resulting in this fee to cover overnight mailing.)

*Remaining balance is due 45 days prior to arrival. This includes balance of any package add-ons.

*If Guest chooses to add airfare, both retail and negotiated air are available. Negotiated air payment is not due until 45 days prior to arrival, carries no fees if cancelled or changed more then 45 days prior to arrival, and carries smaller fees if changed within 45 days prior to arrival.

*Guest is able to add low cost Vacation Insurance covering all package components and add-ons. Insurance is non-refundable after 14 days of insurance booking date.

*Guest is able to add car rentals. Cost is fully refunded if reservation is cancelled and voucher returned. If Primary Collision Damage Waiver is purchased, this too is fully refunded if rental car or full reservation is cancelled.

*Guest is able to add private transfers (i.e. Town Car or Limo). Cost is fully refunded if reservation is cancelled and voucher returned.

*Guest is able to purchase Cirque du Soleil vouchers to add to package. Cost is fully refunded if reservation is cancelled and voucher returned. Note, normally Cirque tickets are non-refundable at time of purchase.

*Guest is able to purchase Richard Petty Driving Experience vouchers to add to package. Cost is fully refunded if reservation is cancelled and voucher returned. Note, normally experience is non-refundable at time of purchase.

*Guest is able to add a beach stay at: Bahama House (Daytona Beach), Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort, Sheraton Sand Key Resort, TradeWinds Island Grand Resort St. Petersburg Beach (St. Pete/ Clearwater area), or Disney’s Vero Beach Resort (Vero Beach.) Beach Stay cost not due until 45 days prior to arrival and is fully refunded if reservation is cancelled at least 45 days prior to arrival. Insurance (if purchased) covers this stay too.
