Recruiters for the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando will visit the Pensacola Civic Center on April 6 at 6 p.m.

The company is looking for recent high school graduates for its new CareerStart Program, which runs from August until mid-January.

"We're looking for energetic, passionate students who want to work with guests from all over the world," said Lisa Downs, program manager.

The students will earn about $6.40 an hour and work a minimum of 30 hours a week in a variety of positions throughout Disney World, she said.

Interested students must attend the presentation at 6 p.m. or view an online presentation at www.disneycareerstart.com

Hmmm..........very interesting. Seems to me Disney has decided to expanded the College Program to more than just those who are going to college.

Two weeks ago at our school's senior assembly we were all handed information about this program. I disregarded it since I'm going to UCF in June and already have an interview with Disney. I can't wait to begin working with the mouse!

CareerStart has been around since at least January. Basically it's the College Program minus the college part- same housing, same pay, same jobs. I do think they also take a special class as part of the program, but it may not be mandatory.

I'm glad to see that they are at least mandating that the recruits be high school graduates. I hope we never see the day they start hiring high school students in search of a quick and easy summer job. The magic would definilty be lost somewhat. Some students would be great, don't get me wrong, but I know alot of high school kids wouldn't take the effort needed to produce the magic their jobs needed.

There are tons of High school kids that work for Disney part time. If you live in the Orlando area Disney is just like any other part time and summer job for teens. Its always been that way in both Disney world and Disneyland. The program that they are talking about involves living in Disney housing. For this you must be a high school graduate. Otherwise if your 15 your more than welcome to work for Disney.

There are tons of high school students at work all over the property. They cover many positions including food and beverage, merchandise...those who are old enough work may even work attractions.

Just because it's a summer job doesn't mean they don't put in the effort. I know people who worked there in high school and they definitely gave the extra effort.

As others have already said Disney already allows high school students to work. And they have for years. Infact there are members of this board (such as Patrick I believe) who worked at WDW while still in High School.

Disney even has a program for those HS students that have been expelled or dropped out of school. It's called Project Future (odd name for a bunch of students that have been expelled or dropped out of HS). Disney basically takes on the role of teacher in a classroom setting, and in return for Disney hiring teachers to teach them they work in the front lines of the park for low wages. I don't remember exactly so somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But I think the Project Future kids also get paid more than the CP kids.

Universal also has a program called "Back To Your Future" where they help people to get more education. I don't know the details but I think it's for High School drop-outs...

I've actually been looking into the CareerStart program for the last few days...I'm really dissapointed that they aren't offering a SINGLE presentation here in Washington State (Or Oregan or Idaho...), but hopefully I'll be able to wow them with the phone interview...wish me luck, I'm faxing in my application tomorrow!

And just out of curiousity, does anybody know if there is any chance at all of a CS CM getting to be a Jungle Cruise Skipper? Because that is my ultimate goal in life....(Not that I wouldn't happily serve Dole Whips or whatever...)
