Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railway

Well the first screens that appear to be 3D.

Appear to be 3D so as to make the ride appear as if it had actual three dimensional physical sets!! Actual sets that modern technology doesn't allow for. We still rely on screens to make you feel as if you are actually entering a movie and...hang on....

The application here seems like it will be very impressive, though.

I hate the overreliance on screenz as much as you, but I'm open minded when they are used well or to do things that would be impossible with practical sets. I believe it was @MisterPenguin who posted a video at some point on the main thread that showed an older application of the technology that will be used here and it was mind-blowing. And that was just a YouTube video.

Still should have been a new build, though. RIP GMR.

Seems with all the hype for Galaxy Edge this attraction has not got the love or attention it should be getting. I may be in the minority here but I am looking forward to this opening more than Galaxy Edge with it be the first classical(ish) none IP(ish) Disney dark ride opening for years. I am guessing due to all the exciting construction been inside is why we don’t hear more about it but does any of the people in the know here have a an idea on opening date. Out there last week October and really really wanting to do this.

On the boards, there are a lot of full on Great Movie Ride advocates so there isn't the positive hype that something new would be given. Couple that with the fact that all construction is being done inside, at apparent top secret status, out of the eyes of the public have been the reasons for lack of excitement, at this point. As a person that went to DHS since it opened as Disney MGM, I too am more excited about this one then Galaxy by huge amounts. And I loved the GMR.
Taking out the heart and soul of the park sure doesn't give it any negative points.
That attraction was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure ever since the soul was destroyed in the killing of the working studio. It just hung on because there was not a whole lot of anything else. They tried a heart transplant when they managed to get a new sponsorship by Turner. The operation was not a success. Hiding it behind that Big Ugly Hat since 2000, didn't contribute to it maintaining a long life either. The last decade of operation the GMR was operating at half capacity every single time I went to it. Only one train operating. It didn't help that the vast majority of visitors to DHS were there to ride the Tower of Terror and RnRC. People that love thrill rides are usually not all that interested in a slow ride through story sets. Sad, that it no longer was an attraction that today's audience wanted to see anymore, but, everything has a life cycle.

Congestive Heart Failure. On the other hand, Stitch’s Great Escape suffered from a congenital heart defect. It was born with a problem.

I definitely agree with you. I really really loved Great Movie Ride. Always made a point of riding it when we visited DHS. The Wizard of Oz and Alien segments in particular always made me smile.

That said, it was (for me, endearingly) corny and desperately in need of updating. More so than TCM or Disney was ever going to pay for. If I didn’t fully recognize all the movies (been going to Disney since 1995), then today’s kids really wouldn’t. So it was a ride, at the end of the day, for nostalgic adults.

Even if it had been updated, I’m not convinced it would have made it any more popular, unless it was very IP/Disney heavy, which would have defeated the purpose of the ride. And would have certainly earned even more grumbles on the board even if they’d gone that route anyways.

Updating it to a Mickey/Minnie themed ride makes it much more timeless. It’s honestly shocking to me that there hasn’t been a ride dedicated to Mickey and the gang before this. [Im not counting Mickey’s Toontown. That was just a glorified play area]. I’m really looking forward to trying the new ride and seeing Mickey incorporated in a more concrete way than just seeing him in Fantasmic.

Mickey is an IP (actually, the ultimate definition of an IP).... just sayin', for those of you that might've forgotten.

The GMR was also made in an era before any brand-catalogue-scorched-earth policy. Meaning, the intent was to show the BEST MOVIES, not just Disney-owned movies.

It was that old way of doing things that made Who Framed Roger Rabbit and TZToT possible then, and impossible now.

One wonders if the Fox purchase had happened 5 years earlier then GMR’s removal might not have happened.

The old way of doing things....but what about opening an entire land based on Avatar? Not arguing your point that synergy and IP rules all, but as we see it isnt entirely true even today. If the pitch is good enough then anything is possible.

Without mickey you dont have a park. We probably wouldnt even heard of that walt disney person.
So i dont really relate that to the ip issue.

That's because the whole IP argument is false, imo.

EVERY SINGLE THING that is created, advertised, marketed, successful, sold, bought, turned into xyz, is an IP.

Right. The argument is about using existing IP vs new IP created specifically for the theme parks.

Completely disagree. The entire point of the Disney parks is entering the worlds you know and love from elsewhere.

Most guests don't spend nearly the amount of time in the parks as those of us who post here frequently. People here love Figment, and Figment is the classic example they use of a park-specific character that's beloved. He's beloved by US, but not by everyone. If you're a Disney-loving family who visits WDW once every 5 or 10 years, you may have only spent 20 total minutes with Figment since 1982, but you've spent hours and hours with Elsa, Simba, Belle, and Chewbacca.
