The film Newsies was partly filmed in the park itself, you can clearly see the areas near the bottom of the New York Street/Streets of America in the film.

Okay, so maybe it wasnt a "working studio". but it certainly at times was a studio that worked.

can we all agree on that?

p.s. i miss the days that they used to film stuff in there and mgm was a much bigger deal. poor mgm, how i miss your glory days.

Wasn't one of the WCW shows taped there?

Yes I attend several weekend taping of WCW Nitro and their weekend saturday nite show on the sound stages. I even remember that they tape some shows right outside by the ticket gate on the plaza (one wrestler even jump from the MGM sign back into the ring). I do not know if WWF ever did any taping there. Then WCW moved to Universal lots.

...A "working studio" is a studio that where filming takes place a majority of the time; MGM has never been that. A "working studio" has a studio infrastructure, which MGM does not (no, the displays of Disney costumes on the Backlot Tour does not a "wardrobe department" make).

It's no more a "working studio" than any warehouse space occasionally rented to film in. AEfx

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Martin stated that those soundstages were quite advanced when they were built? I'm not arguing the points about the studios just curious. Thanks!

With the closure of the Animation Studios, nothing is regularly filmed there. However, there are schools and summer programs for up and coming directors, actors, and other movie-making students that are filmed at MGM.

the last thing i knew that was filming there was who wants to be a millonare, and some parts of the christmas parade. allthough it would be cool if they'd tape the suite life of zack and cody, hannah montana, and cory in the house there:shrug: i dunno if they stoped taping things. all i knew is universal stoped taping things in 2005, disney in ????.

When I worked there in the mid - 90's. It was in full production. Sounstages 2 and 3 were always busy. They did feature films there. I remember "Passenger 57" with Wesley Snipes. I remember "Marvins Room" which was filmed around Central Florida and a large part around WDW. I met a lot of movie stars from that movie: Meryl Streep, Leonardo Di Caprio, Diane keaton, Robert De Niro, Kelly Ripa.

Then they were filming a weekly series with Hulk Hogan, Thunder in Paradise and Tarzan. and a lot of WWF. and many others specials and game shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

And they had a full post production facilities. Film editing, sound recording and editing. Many offices and technical staff behind the scenes. The theater that was used for the Walt Disney story and others. That was originally the Dailies theater where they screened they dailies that they just shot that day.

I had some some friends who were projectionists, and that was their jobs to run the projectors so that the directors and producers could watch them. So he got a sneek peek at the new movies.

Since I work for a manjor motion picture production company at a "working studio" and I have worked on many shows taking place at Disney and Universal and all over central Florida I feel I must open my loud mouth and add my two cents. Since I work with many many people that worked out at the Disney-MGM Studios and I myself have worked on shows shot there since Sheena closed up shop I feel I must correct you.

The Disney-MGM Studios were producing shows years before the theme park was ever opened. The studios are a real working studio weather you like it or not. They have all of the elements of any studio I have ever worked at, fully functional sound stages, a post production facility (which in its heyday was run by The Post Group who is one of the most famous Hollywood post houses), a commisary, and production offices. Today Disney still has all of these elements in place the only difference is they only have one stage now and their production offices are limited to those in the Roy Disney Production Centre (aka - i.d.e.a.s.).

The Disney Studios Florida was also home to a fully functional animation studios, which was able to produce animated films from beginning to end without the help of other animation studios like Disney Animation Paris or Disney Animation Sydney.

So... I hate to burst your bubble but it is not an issue of symantics. They were a full working studio. In recent years, production has left Orlando for places like Shreveport, LA and Wilmington, NC and has caused Disney to cut back on production space because money was not being made off of them like in years past. They still have a studio manager, production space rentals and locations to shoot.

Now as far as Universal Studios Florida... right now they are in production on the direct to DVD release of "Bring It On: In It To Win It" starring Ashley Benson from Days of Our Lives and Jennifer Tisdale (older sister of Disney Channel's Ashley Tisdale). They also have one or two more films slated to shoot there in the next 6 months. They also just finished a production for NBC Television, TNA Wrestling is based on Universal Stage 21 (former home to Nickelodeon Guts), and they have kept themselves busy shooting commericals which is the main production revenue in Orlando (Disney has been home to many of them since Sheena as well).

Universal Studios Florida was also home to Nickelodeon Studios Florida from about 1991 until around 2005 in which Viacom ended their contract and moved the studios to Nick on Sunset.

Blue Man Group has a stage show going into former Nick Studios Stage 18 and FSN/Sun Sports now have Nick Studios Stage 19. Stage 17 (the control rooms and office space) is now home to the Sun Sports edit suites and office space for various clients.

Productions are coming back to Central Florida. This year alone Orlando is slated to have 5 or 6 major studio released motion pictures. The rest of the state is slated for an addidtional 6 or 7 films including a Walt Disney Pictures release, "National Treasure 2". It wouldnt suprise me if Disney did something to support it, but then again I wouldnt be shocked if they sat back and did nothing at all.

I think they used to tape WCW World Wide there (they then started taping these at universal studios or that may have been before) . I know they held MOnday Nitro there a few times (during the NWO). Hulk Hogan Ticker Tape parade was filmed there I think.

The backlot tour when it frst opened they used to tell you that the "false front" houses there one was the Golden Girls house and the Empty Nest House and that all the outside shots were done there and sent back to California. Those shows were out LONG before MGM even opened.

This is true. But like I stated in my post, the backlot and the stages have been around longer then the park.
