MGM no more?

I believe I read somewhere (could've been here, I don't remember) that the MGM name will begin disappearing in early 2005. I think this has been in the works for a year or more.

If they're going to change the name, change it to the Walt Disney Studios ---
and don't forget Walt. :D

I love this idea.

When I was in WDW in 1998 for a weeklong travel agent fam, most of us travel agents were, out of habbit, refering to the Disney Studios as MGM. The instructor repeatedly kept correcting us, saying MGM was no longer associated with the park and it was to be referred to as Disney Studios. So as far back as 1998 this name change was implemented ....(or even before '98?).

Studios? What studios? With the elimination of Florida Feature Animation and destruction of the residential sets, there's not much "studio" activity left in the Studios. Any name with "Studios" in it would seem to miss the mark now.
Oh I agree! What will their tag line be? Welcome to the Walt Disney Studios - now featuring no working studios at all!

*sighs*

:goodnevil So here's a question...if MGM is no more, anything associated with MGM has to be taken out too, right? A cast member that goes to college with me was telling me that the reason they built the hat was because the Chinese Theater could no longer be a focus - does that mean no more Great Movie Ride? Puleeeeeeeese tell me this is not the case...anyone???

-The Great Movie Ride (or the whole building for that sake) is not going anywhere. There was a rumor flying around the net that Disney would replace it with a Disney-fied version (with the Disney Villains). I agree that the hat was strategically placed there to take all focus off the theater (in fact you can't see any part of the theater when you enter the park.

-Just because it is not a 'real-working' studios, doesn't mean it shouldn't be called Studios. It is supposed to be like a studios, and most of the attractions are based on this. The plot of Sounds Dangerous is that you are watching and evaluating a new pilot for ABC. In Indiana Jones, they act like it is a real taping of the show. WWtbaM is supposed to be like a taping of the former ABC show. RnR, you are trying to get to a Concert, and ToT...well forget about any Studio references, this is just a great ride. Just my opinion that it doesn't have to be a real-working studios to be called "Studios".

The hat was placed for multiple reasons... there WAS a villains ride in early design stages. I don't know what happened to it... if someone knows, please let me know. It was also placed because Disney bought the El Captain Theatre in Hollywood. No need to show off a theatre that Disney doesn't even own.

Even if MGM was to be removed from the park name, all Disney would need to do is add that scenes from the Great Movie Ride are trademarks of Sony and Time Warner... or replace the munchkins with Muppets. LOL

That, and remove the logo above the Animation Courtyard Gate.

I always say MGM, I don't plan on changing it :)
You tell that to upper management and you'll be fired. It's a big CM no-no to just say MGM. ;)

All I'm saying is to be careful who you say that to.

Let's Look at this Objetively

In the interests of being objective, I would like to list the locations where each of the studios trademarks are found. I have no information or assumptions about their future use. And as always “a cast member told me…” does not count as official. It becomes very clear what the park’s current name is.

Walt Disney Studios

Various merchandise in the park with a Mickey camera logo
(Note: This logo is the official logo of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, CA.)

Okay, I don't know what you're trying to prove there, but we already know that the current name is the "Disney-MGM Studios." That's a fact...

So, if you're trying to prove that, umm, yeah, you did that. :)

But as far as the new name, you haven't really proved anything...

Why don't they just cut a deal with Sony and rename the park the Disney-Sony Studios? New scenes in the GMR could include Spider-Man, Men in Black, and Charlie's Angels.

Oh, and SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2...... :lookaroun

Without MGM, why would they have to do anything with the Chinese Theatre building differently? Does MGM/UA (or whowever owns the rights to MGM stuff) also own the original Chinese theatre in LA? I understand about the content INSIDE the movie ride itself, but the facade would never need to be changed would it?

ps. What special deals did they have concerning OZ and Bond?

Well, simply put, Disney has rights to play Bond music in the park. That's the only right Disney has relating to Bond as far as I know.

As for Oz, I believe they have the right to use Oz music, and they have the right to use certain scenes from the original movie in the GMR... but this does NOT include the tornado scene. Hence why Mickey is there. I know that Disney has the rights to make more Oz movies. However, the rights to the original Wizard of Oz are owned by Time Warner, NOT MGM or Disney. I want to make that point clear.

As far as the Chinese Theatre, the only reason Disney wants to remove it is because they own the El Captain. That's the only reason it would be removed... and the fact that potentially the ride building for the Great Movie Ride could be expanded to make the hat a potential entrance for an attraction... but the chances of that happening are slim. Very slim. The reasons for that are:

1. The removal and re-installation of the signed cement tiles
2. Massive re-construction
3. Budget reasons- the budget was removed... potentially for backlot expansion and Indy.

As for the content inside the ride, nothing would need to be removed. The addition of a Copyright or Trademark mention of Sony for certain sections of the ride would be the most that would be needed.
