MGM no more?

In the movie production industry the MGM name is being retired with the exception of existing titles and series'. Because disney has the rights to build attractions for certain movie based rides and shows, it would not suprise me if they formally change the name of the park to Disney's Studios as opposed to MGM Studios.

Yeah, but it's costly to do a park name change. Don't expect it to happen very quickly. I'm predicting it will happen slowly over the next two years, if it happens at all. But it's doubtful it's going to happen all at once.

I could be wrong but isn't the studios somewhat being referred as the Disney Studio's, It's official name is Disney MGM but I think it is called Disney Studios,(Bus Stop Signs and stuff like that)?

I personally don't think they will ever change it!

The park has been opened over 15 years with the name MGM. Most people, including cast members refer to this park as MGM.

I think they will keep the name!

The name will be changing. They have been in the process of weening it out of the park for the last 2-3 years. Most people will still call it MGM, but that's a bridge Disney doesn't really have to worry about. I would expect a big announcement about the change in association with Epcot's 25th.

The name will be officially gone by June the 27th. This the date the original 20 year contract with MGM/UA runs out, and even if MGM still was in one piece it is unlikely the management would extend it - Disney virtually walked away with the rights they received, even with special clauses regarding Oz and James Bond, much to the anger of MGM top brass (when they found how little Disney had been able to spend they did everything they could to pull out. Disney threatened litigation, and by law they DID own what they had bought for a knock down price). After this Disney and MGM/UA were as friendly as Eisner and Roy Disney.

I bet every visitor who ever went to D-MGM still calls it `MGM` though. I know I will!

The name change has been in the works for some time now, hasn't it? Last time I was at WDW in 2001, most all CMs I encountered and signs referred to MGM as Disney Studios and so did the resort channel in the hotels. I still call it MGM because it is faster to say than Disney Studios and it has become habit.

Yea...I believe some of the buses even say Disney Studios...

I sometimes refer to this park as MGM other times the studios...in any event I like the fact that they're dropping MGM from the title...just my opinion.

Studios? What studios? With the elimination of Florida Feature Animation and destruction of the residential sets, there's not much "studio" activity left in the Studios. Any name with "Studios" in it would seem to miss the mark now.

Dumb excuse, but I'm too lazy to say "Disney Studios". "MGM" has a better flow to its name.

Either way, I'm sticking to MGM. :)

The name change is already gradually occuring, although naturally people will still refer to it as MGM (heck, people still call Epcot 'EPCOT CENTER'). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people on this message board still say 'EPCOT Center', 'Disney Village', 'Dixie Landings', and 'Wedway'. When NY Street turns into Streets of America, we are most likely still going to say NY Street. It's something Disney can't/nore cares to control. New merchandice is starting to just have Disney Studios on it. Really, the only major things that have Disney-MGM Studios on it are the park signs and Time Guides.

As a CM,we are required to call the park either "the Studios" or "Disney/MGM Studios", never "MGM" or "MGM Studios." As far as the name change, promotional videos call it "Disney Studios", but supposedly that is for international guests' benefit. Most talk around the park says the name will not change soon, as the agreement is easily renewable on Disney's end. MGM's sale will not effect the park, the change will be up to Disney.

The Show Designer for NY Street is still calling it that. BTW, he spend a month designing a part that would have portrayed Washington D.C. that was cut because of the space Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show was going to need.

I thought they were going to change the name to Disney Studios Florida.

I doubt that'd happen.....it's the same thing as Universal Studios Florida.

If they're going to change the name, change it to the Walt Disney Studios ---
and don't forget Walt. :D

The new name would be "The Walt Disney Studios." It's the same name as the park in Paris. You can easilly find the new logo all over the park on everything from martini glasses to T-Shirts. But you won't see any official name change happen all at once...
If it changes, it will be over the course of the next year or two. There's simply too much signage to change.

I bought a cool t-shirt there in Sept 2003 (Black & white Mickey head/film projector logo on a dark gray shirt) and it says "The Walt Disney Studios" - yes, the "Walt Disney" is much bolder than "The" and "Studios"
