MGM finally being dropped?

I think this has been mentioned before, but very little in the Great Movie Ride would have to change. MGM sold off most of their movie library.

For example, the Wizard of Oz was bought by Turner, now Time Warner.

Others weren't even MGM.
Alien - Fox
Indiana Jones - Lucasfilm
Casablanca - Warner Bros.

So dropping MGM would only mean some minor changes. Of course, some areas could really use an update (Alien anyone?)

Why are so many people saying "Disney Studios" makes the most sense? Soon, there will be no studios there at all once the Millionaire stage gets turned into a ride...correct? So, what is the point of calling it a studio at all?? I think they should separate it from competing with Universal Studios and come up with a totally new name for the park without the word "Studios" in it. I know that will never happen, but that's my .02.

Disney bought Muppets and PIXAR (both smart moves) and now they should buy the MGM brand as well (at least the studios portion). I can see a redo of TGMR. A famous Star Wars scene should take the place of ALIEN to go along with Star Tours. BTW what ever happened to its supposed revamp?

How many MGM movies have been made there? Your logic is full of holes.

That was because of contract reasons for usage of movies in the GMR. That's why I never liked the MGM name in the title either.

Sure, without the word Studios in the title they can get rid of the stunt shows, Studios Backlot Tour, all the "stage" references, and finally rename all those pesky Hollywood-centric street names and dining locations. :brick:

Sure, Disney had a few studios they used and they have since moved animation, but the concept is still intact with Disney's movie heritage (both real & animation). Besides, "Disney-MGM Studios" opened before Universal, so though Universal had the first studio park in Cali, perhaps Universal should change the name in Florida (just a joke). To my knowledge they don't really film there either and it was never built with the intention of full scale shoots.

I would have to agree that if any change were to be made, Disney Studios would make more sense than Disney-Pixar Studios or Disney-ABC Studios. The park is themed primarily to movies. Pixar would imply a primary focus on computer animation and ABC would imply a focus on television. While, there is some television theming in the park, the overwhelming majority of the theming is centered around live action movies. Hence, Disney Studios would make the most sense.

Why imply a specific focus in the name if that focus does not exist in the park?

Maybe they should explore the ABC connection more? They have the SOAP Weekends already, and don't they have some restaurant at DL that's themed to the soaps. They could do more than just the commisary. ABC/ Buena Vista/Touchstone should bring back Super Star Television.
Their library should have a sufficient supply of shows like Home Improvement, Golden Girls, the Soaps, LOST, etc. to work with for the attraction and CROSS PROMOTE!:)

No matter what they do or don't change it to, I'll probably always call it "MGM"....completely out of habit and history. Similar to the way I call the TTA, Wedway and POR, Dixie....that's what they were called when I went to Disney all those times in my childhood so they stick with me.

Though I suppose "Disney Studios" is probably best IMO.

Maybe they should call it the Harry Potter Studios. It would be connected to the new 5th gate by the new monorail extension. And then you would stay at the new resort on the site of the STOL port. Of course THE LADDER would oversee all this work!

I really really hope not. GMR is one of my most favourite rides, and I would hate to see it changed.

And what's up with the Disney Pixar rumors? I don't see how Pixar works at studios.

LOL

I heard the new resort at STOL was to be "Hogwarts Villas", a DVC addition, with a flying car people mover connected to Beastly Kingdom.

First, great post! This firms up how realistic a change will be for the split between Disney & MGM.

On that note, while watching the History Channel's Modern Marvel episode on Walt Disney World, I noticed that they used "Disney Studios" and "Disney-MGM Studios" interchangably during narration. Knowing that Disney is very specific as to what they allow in these shows as it's all marketing moves, this makes me think. With my employer, they will often begin a phased approach to large scale branding changes such as this. I've also noticed that the newer logo use have the Disney font quite a bit larger than the MGM. Old signage has all capital letters consistent in size, but no more. If the name were to be simply Disney Studios, this would be the ideal transition.

Are we already mid-stream in the change and not noticing it?:drevil:

<edited> Before I forget....maybe to appease all the folks who prefer to keep the park themes correctly "aligned", Disney could move that filthy old Lion (MGM logo) over the Animal Kingdom where Lions belong?!?
