Mermaid is not overrated, and is a great fit for Fantasyland... prove me wrong.

No one comes to MK for Mermaid.
I'm not so sure about that. For many families with little ones, Fantasyland as a whole, including Mermaid, is very much a reason to come. Families with target audiences for those tamer attractions sometimes could care less for big thrill rides like Everest and Forbidden Journey.

It is surprising to learn Disney spent a bigger chunk of coin on Mermaid than some of those bigger names.

What about a park without Fantasyland like Disney’s California Adventure? The attraction was supposed to be the big new thing until Radiator Springs Racers opened. How much more appealing would Fantasyland be if all of that money had gone towards something like three traditional dark rides?

Now granted what I'm about to say is a small sample. But the last few times at the magic kingdom for us, 2014, 15, 16, mermaid was a walk on. In 2014 it was the middle of the summer, in the middle of the day, peak time. We went to mermaid and we saw 1 other guy with his kid, the entire queue and ride. It was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. I have video and pics someplace as I had to record it. So I haven't seen the target demographic really caring about it. It could have been a ride for the ages but they wet the bed. Which seems all to common in modern Disney.

Yeah, both times I've been on Little Mermaid there was no wait and many ride vehicles were empty. It's just not a popular ride.

This is definitely a ride for the young kiddos and should be viewed as such. The Little Mermaid continues to be one of Disney's most popular IPs and its inclusion as an attraction was long overdue. The upcoming live-action version may necessitate changes in the ride thematics.

yeah kinda like disneysea had. maybe if they had done something like this... or maybe put all the mermaid land on the other side of the train tracks with an underpass to entire new land. also i added a 7dmt extension through a haunted woods area where LM building was

There are exceptions. I took my gf to Disney this year. She had not been in 35 years (I go 1 or 2 times yearly). Of all the rides in MK, Mermaid was her favorite. I had to go on Pooh. Her reaction was meh. For perspective, our ages are 64/67.
