Merlin's Marvelous Miscellany opens in Fantasyland

I haven't seen this mentioned on here yet, it looks like the replacement for the Holiday shop in Fantasyland has finally opened. It looks like a decently themed shop, though Disney's resistance to unique and highly themed merchandise continues to disappoint. The old Heraldry shop was way better than this, because seeing the merchandise was a bit of an 'attraction' itself. Even having a corner of the store selling unique 'wizard' merchandise would be a nice complement to the plethora of shirts, ears, other generic Disney merchandise that's sold everywhere.

Still no update on the replacement for Le Bat en Rouge though...

While the Heraldry shop was certainly much more interesting inside, I'm a bit enchanted with the weathered wood-grained signage. It's a nicely detailed touch. Maybe not Hungry Bear sign nice, but nice. Yeah, the theming inside is standard merchandise crap with some peripheral vague props. A gorilla skull is wizard themed for some reason?

This is a cute remake of that little shop.

But my God, what a boring and sad display of actual merchandise. Just the same Chinese made plastic crap and t-shirts for sale in every other store from Pixar Pier to Toontown, and from Critter Country to HollywoodLand.

There's so much potential with this theme, and yet they dumbed it down to coffee mugs and bedazzled sweatshirts.

This store confuses me. What is the backstory? Why did Merlin open it? When did Merlin come to Disneyland and why? What is his ancestry?

I need a backstory to make sense of the world!

Shop looks cool. Same old merch in every store like you said. They have been cranking out new merch at a record pace and yet the higher end collectible stuff at places like Disneyana hasn’t changed since before the pandemic. It’s been a while since I saw a “must have” item.

Behind a paywall as apparently we should be paying for such hard-hitting journalism.

Can you paste the backstory please or give us all the headlines? Thanks.

oops, i'm sorry! here is what i think is the most relevant part of the article:

Imagineering took visual cues from the original Merlin’s Magic Shop for the new Merlin’s Marvelous Miscellany. The interior of the stuffed-to-the-gills small shop reflects the wizard’s stitched-together patchwork aesthetic.

“I wouldn’t say that Merlin is the most organized of tutors,” Dobrzycki said. “Everything of his is up in the rafters and in the windows, too. It’s like a really delightful jumble of his teaching and research materials.”

In the 1963 “Sword in the Stone,” Merlin stuffs his magic carpet bag full of spells, books and scientific tools before heading off to tutor the young King Arthur. Imagineering has unpacked the wizard’s magic carpet bag in Merlin’s Marvelous Miscellany for the backstory being told in the Fantasyland shop.

“When you’re in the shop, you’re going to see books lining the walls, little Da Vinci models of these great flying machines or tanks, chemistry sets that show his interest in alchemy, astrology and astronomy, star charts, homemade telescopes and armillary globes,” Dobrzycki said.

A jousting dummy with a bucket helmet and broken lance sits in the corner of the shop. Merchandise rests atop stacks of books. Zodiac and astrology charts line the wall behind the checkout stand. And, of course, there will be plenty of bird perches for Archimedes — Merlin’s owl companion.

“The whole upper quarter of the shop is just Merlin’s stuff jam packed and stacked in there,” Dobrzycki said. “It’s going to have a lot of nods to the movie. It’s going to be a pretty cool space.”

They missed a great opportunity to put a small 'life sized' Archimedes animatronic owl on one of the perches.
Disney used to do cool stuff like this....

Even if it was a simple figure like Figaro over at Fantasy Fair it would add a element of delight to what should be a truly magical shop.

Great Idea! If there's a Disney character design more suited to a rudimentary robot than Archimedes, I can't think of it now. Wing twitch. Partial head pivot. Done.
