Mel Brooks Writing Spaceballs Sequel
Source: Ain't-It-Cool-News
September 28, 2004

In a Q&A with Playbill magazine, Mel Brooks says that he's currently working on a Spaceballs sequel. Here's the clip from the interview which starts off by talking about the big screen adaptation of The Producers.

Playbill: Will you have a role in it?

MB: It's doubtful, but I'm writing myself back into the Spaceballs sequel that I'm now writing, so you haven't seen the last of my face. Why another Spaceballs? It wouldn't feel right have anyone else play Yoghurt and the first one was the best experience I've had making a movie since Blazing Saddles.

Playbill: When can we expect that?

MB: Best case scenario: a week before the new Star Wars opens. Worst Case Scenario: a year after the new star wars opens.

Stay tuned for more news on this as it comes. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith will be released in theaters on May 19.

OY - a SEQUEL! So Mel thinks he can beat the odds and have a hit with a sequel. More power to him.

I'm still waiting for History of the World Part II. :)

Merchandising. Merchandising. Where the real money from the movie is made. Spaceballs - the T-shirt, Spaceballs - the Coloring Book, Spaceballs - the Lunch box, Spaceballs - the Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs - the Flame Thrower.
The kids love this one. Last, but not least, Spaceballs - the Doll. Me.

*sigh* I love this movie

I hope his humor translates well in new millenium (I didn't want to say "millenium", sounded corny). I watch a lot of old-ish movies and think that, as much as I loved the movie in the 80's, there's no way it would have been made now. I think Mel Brooks is hilarious but I hope a new generation will love him as much.

I can't wait! Loved the first one. I just bought the DVD for my husband as part of his birthday gift yesterday. The movie is hillarious. I'm sure the sequel will be, too.

Big screen adaptation of The Producers? Ummm... wasn't that originally a movie with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder? Must mean that it has all the songs from the musical now. Interesting. But as far as Spaceballs 2 goes, I'm very much excited about this!! Especially if they can get some of the original actors back. Unless, as was mentioned, he does it like the new trilogy and goes prequel on us. That might be kinda amusing. "See Dark Helmet as a child! See the origins of Yoghurt!! See even more great merchandising oppotunities!!!"

The original 'The Producers' is a classic with Mostel and Wilder. With the exception of Springtime for Hitler, it was not a musical. You're right about the new one being an adaptation of the musical version. Also, Mel Brooks is working on a musical version of 'Young Frankenstein'. He's hoping to bring that to Broadway with the same creative team from 'The Producers'.

"Evil will always triumph because good is dumb"

This is the best news I've ever heard. Spaceballs is probably my favorite movie of all time. I have faith in Mel Brooks to create a quality sequel

The good news is that just about everyone from the original isn't exactly bogged down with projects, so they should be able to come back to play their roles. The only exception being John Candy, of course.

O.K...just one more quote for good measure:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dark Helmet : Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Star.
Lone Starr : What?
Dark Helmet : I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Lone Starr : What's that make us?
Dark Helmet : Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become.
