Yes, before WDW opened the Contemporary was called Tempo Bay. They even had early postcards done up that said Tempo Bay on the back.

That's really cool that they had the monorail running through Tommorowland! I've always thought they should do that. Since it would be such a big undertaking, I would think this wouldn't happen anytime in the near future, but considering they can charge tons of $$ for resorts on the MK monorail line, I'm sure someday, "when all the hotels are full all the time", a new resort will be built in the area.

I think that they have considered the new resort in recent yrs because I was doing an essay on Disney architecture for university and during my research I came across this website
http://www.predock.com/med6.html

considering that Disney didn’t start using mainstream architects until the late 80’s this resort must have been designed sometime between then and now. This is the same architect who did Hotel Santa Fe at Disneyland Paris

Well, half the problem appears to be that the Persian, Venetian, and Asian were all to built partly or totally over the Lake?? At least the picture looks that way.

Also... how scaled is this, cause it appears that the land where the Wilderness Lodge is today is taken up by Fort Wilderness. Was FW suppose to be a lot bigger?

I remember hearing a while ago (before the economic slow-down) that Disney was considering building a new luxury resort, to be even nicer than the Grand Floridian. If my memory serves me (which it rarely does :D ), the Grand missed a five star rating very narrowly (I think it's a 4.5 star resort), and they wanted to build a true 5 star resort.

Yes I recalled that they did consider this resort a few years ago....I also recalled them mentioning that the unstable swamp land was a problem so Disney decided against it

Disney will never have a 5 star resort. From how it was explained to me, a 5 star resort would not have people walking through the lobby in bathing suits to get to the pool, children running around, etc... basically, the things that make it a FAMILY resort. And that's really what Disney wants.

Not so much larger, but different. The first proposal for the WL area was to be called Cypress Point Lodge (picture here:

http://disneypix.com/potw/120602.htm

IIRC, Cypress was one of the "Phase Two" hotels, along with the Asian, Persian & Venetian.
Another Phase Two attraction was to be a Wild West Town located on Bay Lake. I think it was to be located between Pioneer Hall and the FW dock.

Some more FW rumors I've heard over the years:
Buffalo Junction Hotel (located on the Settlement Trading Post site)
Settlement Trading Post would have been torn down to make way for Buffalo Junction Hotel (Small-150 rooms). An addition would have been built onto Pioneer Hall and become the new Trading Post. (Near the ticket windows on the Petting Farm side)
Also part of this project was the rehab and enlargement of River Country. The new entrance to River Country would have been right at Pioneer Hall, near the arcade.
The final part of this plan would have been the construction of Wlderness Junction, the Wild West town that would front on Bay Lake.
Supposedly the plans were all drawn up, but this was in the planning stage at the same time as the Cruise Line. The decision was made to Cruise and not upgrade FW.
Like I said, these are just rumors, AFAIK.

2 comments...well 3 actually....Buy 'Designing Disney's Theme Parks' and it will explain all about the hotel situation.

Tyler...the way our transportation officials (watercraft) describe it, its a 4.5 star because of one if its luxuries...in case you didn't know...the monorail can also be considered an inconvenience.

Floridian Way used to be Asian way before they constructed the grand, alluding the the fact that it was supposed to be different.

There are TONS of ways to stabilize soil...so the unstable soil is not an issue...its how much money disney wants to spend...it involves putting long 'tubes' of clay about 250 ft into the ground, same technique they used at the Kansai airport in Japan...the island airport. And we in watercraft still call it Venetian Point.

Actually, as of 2 weeks ago, the Grand Floridian is now a 3 star resort. Prior to that, it was only 4 stars.

How did it lose a star, Tyler?

I'm not really allowed to say. However, they are working to correct the issue at fault, so with any luck, next year they will be back to 4 stars. Disney will not pursue any higher rating, as it would cut into some of the Disneyesque things that are valued by guests.
