Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

Not sure how I feel about the new movie set to come out, but I LOVED Paddington when I was a kid and couldn't help but think of him when we toured this section of London. OK, back to shopping!

Pretty light...

DH checked out the coat of arms thing they had in one of the shops, but I wasn’t allowed to take pics. And by the tone of the CM, I got them impression she has to deal with that a lot and wasn’t too pleased with me. Oh well.

We head outside and try to figure out where to next? And more importantly- what to drink! So, I take pics while we decide…not sure if it helps the thought process, but it does pass the time!

After seeing the insane crowds at Rose & Crown and realizing we need new drinks, we decide to head to Ireland. Besides, DH made a good point...while we won't always be kid free at WDW, R&C will likely be there. So we move on...

DH needed a snack, so he ordered the fisherman’s pie. I just wanted to drink, so I got the chilled Irish Coffee and the Kerrygold Irish Cream Liqueur. (ahhhhh- dining by trashcan…something I got used to pretty quickly at F&W)

15646923990_87eb725e3f.jpg

I had a sip of the Kerrygold…offered some to DH – TO TASTE! He downed the entire thing! Greedy little – fill in the blank! He said he thought I was done. Guess who had to get herself another! Little Miss Sunshine was no longer so happy! or sun-shiny for that matter!

We kept on moving once we finished…

We stopped in Greece next. I didn’t take any pics while in line because we started talking to the couple in front of us. Man…they were a RIOT! They were engaged and seemed to be there just for the day. By the time we were done in the line…we were laughing hysterically and I had tzatziki martini in hand.

15646908060_7700670a11.jpg

I wanted to like it…but I didn’t. At least I could taste the liquor…and yes, I finished it!

We decided at this point that we needed a break from F&W. We were having a blast, but after a few hours…we decided on some ride time. So, we start to head back towards Future World...

Oh man, I wish I knew about this last month. They were selling them on the Disney Store online at regular price. The trick...they weren't listing them with the rest of the Dooney bags. You had to type in Tinkerbell and it brought up all Tink merch, including 4 or 5 of the Tink Dooney bags. Everyone thought it was a fluke, and maybe it was, but people were able to buy them. I know this stuff is normally reserved for people registered for that specific RunDisney event, but somehow these slipped onto the website.

I don't know if you're on Facebook, but there is a Dooney group on there that you might want to request to join. They sell bags on there, sometimes better deals than ebay, but they also are on top of these flukes like the Tink DDBs showing up on the Disney Store site. It can't hurt.

My dream bag is currently for sale on ebay, but I won't allow myself to spend that kind of $ unless Donald is well placed on the front of the bag. Sadly, he is not on this one...but my bank account thanks me!

m-XdyS-Ypva6GT2LugVBwKg.jpg

Just for the heck of it I went to the Disney Store online and did like you said, searching Tinkerbell. I about jumped out of my seat when right there were three of the Dooney Tink bags, the letter carrier, wristlet, and satchel. I clicked on each one and each was sold out. Oh well, not meant to be. Would have grabbed one for her if still available.
There is a DB outlet store at the Premium Outlets over on Vineland and she has scored some bargains in there, but they do not have the Disney patterns there. For a male, I spend way too much time looking at bags, and even worse, shoes, with my wife.

All of the pictures in the World are really detailed and beautiful. May I ask you what camera and lens and F-stop you are using? I only wish I could take pictures like you have. Following along with the drinks, now I know what to try and what to stay away from. Following along.

There are a couple of the LCs ebay that are a little more reasonably priced, but I know that's not the bag you wanted for her. I guess it can't hurt though to check the website now and then b/c it will show in stock if anyone returns there or if they turn up any more surplus. I've see it happen...but it's total "right place-right time" sort of thing. Plus, I don't think you really want to stalk the Disney Store website on the off chance a bag comes into stock.

And the bag and shoe shopping...well, that's just the sign that you're a great husband! :) And I'm sure she appreciates it as well!

Thank you!

As for my camera, it's a Canon EOS Rebel XS. It's no longer made, but was the base DSLR in the earlier days of Canon DSLRs. If I can swing it, I'm considering updating to the EOS 60D at some point in 2015. Not a top of the line, but a good mid range camera that would solve a number of the issues I have with my current model.

As for my lenses, I use 3 different Canon lenses.
1. Canon EF 28-80 mm F3.5-5.6 F/3.5-5.6
2. Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II
3. Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II
***The first lens is my fave since it's pretty versatile. It actually came with my Canon Rebel 2000 film SLR I bought nearly 15 years ago. The second one I bought for the zooming ability. I probably should have bought the 75-300mm instead, but it was out of the budget at the time. The last one is my newest lens...jury still out on it, but it's taken some nice portraits and museum pics.

Beyond that, my camera settings vary. I sometimes even cheat and go into an auto setting if I'm on the move too much to keep adjusting. Flickr actually captures some of that settings data when I upload pics...so, if there's a particular picture...I can look it up on Flickr to see what I did. I also edit my pics in Picasa...so that helps too. I will be adding Adobe Lightroom for photo editing whenever I can upgrade my camera body. I may even put it on my wish list for Santa just so I'm ready for swapping out cameras. :)

Taking a break, so I figured I'd add a few posts. I actually finished up the verbiage for day 2...so, it's really just a matter of getting it all posted. I've cleaned the kitchen so I can turn it into a disaster area, I've made dough for 2 pie crusts, made 2 different kinds of pie filling, prepped the green bean casserole, and have everything set to prep the mac&cheese. Oh- and fed the kids...twice...so it's time for a break!

So, we were leaving the WS and heading back to the future (LOL)...

I don’t know what came over me, but I decided I wanted to walk from the TTC to the Poly. I mean, everyone always says you can and that there’s a walkway…so I figured we’d do it once. The only problem…I wasn’t exactly sure where said walkway was located. I asked a CM, but he just asked me why I wouldn’t take the monorail…since that’s what he always does. And then he admitted it was his first day on the job. He was nice, but not helpful. Oh well, we found it.

It’s now time to rest up a bit, download pics, charge batteries and change. We’ve got a big dinner ahead of us at California Grill (including CAKE!!!!!!!)…and hopefully SDMT and EMH at MK.

Our CG ADR is at 7:40p, so we got in a decent rest before leaving the Poly around 7pm…maybe a little before that. I was also super excited to transition into my new DDB … especially since my lenses fit in there along with all of my normal purse stuff. DH also suggested we take the monorail vs. the boat. I agreed…dressed up, hair flat ironed, etc. – didn’t really want to be on the boat or walking.

So, here I am thinking I’ve got it all together. We arrive at the Contemporary with plenty of time to spare and I pick up my DSLR to take a pic of the Cali Grill signage. I take a pic and to my horror the display says “NO CARD.” Seriously! Are you kidding me!!!!!!! My memory card is still in my computer back in the room!!!!!! Even better, my back up card that I keep for these situations (yes, I’ve had this happen before) is in my camera bag back in the room too! I remember reminding myself to remind myself (clearly an effective plan- NOT!) to load the backup into the new DDB. Yeah, I sooooo didn’t do that. So, I’m hating myself right now and the cheapskate side of me refused to head upstairs to buy a new card. I mean, it’s WDW and I probably would have paid 3-5x a much for new card. Plus, this was a meal with cake…and I take A LOT of pictures…so would a small card even work for me? Probably not. I thought about taking the monorail back to the Poly, but we’d almost definitely be late if I did that.

So, I did the most logical thing…I remembered that I had my phone with me and decided it was my best plan B. Hey, I had to do this in NOLA last summer when I got there and realized I left my camera battery at home (I really have problems!). I guess at least none of this is as bad as my camera issues on Kendall’s 5th birthday. For those that didn’t follow that TR, we got to Chef Mickey’s and I realize I left the video camera back in the room (pre-smart phone days). We were staying at the Contemporary, but neither of us wanted to go back to the room. To top it off, I forgot to charge my camera battery and had my DSLR die mid-day. I have some serious camera issues!

Ok, so enough whining about my camera stupidity. I get out my phone and snap a pic of the CG check in area…

The guy downstairs was a little stuffy, but whatever…we leave him behind pretty quickly after taking the elevator upstairs. Our table isn’t ready and we have a buzzer in hand, so we decide to sit down at the bar. I mean, we’ve been drinking most of the day, so why stop now? I know I started with a cucumber fizz and I have no idea what DH ordered…but it’s clearly the one without the cucumber!

(his may be another sidecar for this round of drinks)

We each got a couple of other drinks while at the bar, but when I don’t have my normal camera set up…I just forget to take pictures! I at least took a few restaurant pics while we waited.

Looks like DH got another drink ... something new...

15744730825_27df7cf00b.jpg

Actually, I think this was DH’s last drink he ordered before we were seated. I believe this was a Moscow Mule. Remember this drink…OK! Thanks!

There were 2 different bartenders behind the bar that night. The guy serving us was very stiff and had us paying our tab every time we ordered a drink. In the past, I believe everything transferred over to our table. At least the other bartender on duty that night (don’t think it was Ray, but I could be wrong) was super friendly and I know he’s served us before. We had a nice little convo about my first drink. On the flip side, DH pointed out the sushi bar area since I love sushi…our bartender smugly said something about their top notch sushi. I tried to find some middle ground and pointed out that I had sushi on our last few visits to CG. DH didn’t remember.

So, I know…this is hardly sounding like magical night…camera issues, stuffy at check in, smug bartender etc. Well, it’s all about to look up.

Our buzzer goes off and a very sweet hostess comes over to escort us to our table. DH had just ordered another drink and the bartender needed him to pay the tab again, so we had to delay her a bit. Still she was so sweet and chatty through all of this. Thankfully, it didn’t take long and we were on our way to our table…

…that’s right baby…WINDOW SEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't ask for a window table, so this was unexpected.

And as you can also see, lots of Mickey confetti too!!! And for those of you who have seen my past reports…you know what that means. OK…not just yet, but you know what that means. LOL

So, now I’m thinking…what luck! The one time I’m at CG and don’t plan on staying for Wishes…we’re given ideal seating. I mean, so much of this trip had gone almost exactly as planned and it felt like CG was becoming the unraveling point of said plan. It wouldn’t be until a little later on that I realized that sometimes fate steps in to improve my plans. More on that in a little bit….for now, I may be stuck with my phone, but I can still take a restaurant pic or more.

Yay for confetti!!!

Yeah- there probably would have been 10 pics like this had it been my big camera. Oh well.

So, our server comes over and I really wish I could remember his name because he made our night! He was HYSTERICAL! It’s now after 8pm, I haven’t eaten since a little after 9am, and I’ve been drinking alcohol all day…and even before sitting down. I asked him for a Diet Coke and some water, just so I could hydrate and caffeinate. He jokes (or so I thought) about what kind of rum should go in my Diet Coke and then he and DH turn it into a double. I really thought they were kidding…but here’s what I got!

15721031936_66b34e6a42.jpg

Yup- it is one very strong rum and Diet Coke!

I couldn’t stop laughing…and at the rate I was going…I figured I might as well drink it. The only problem…I haven’t been in a rum & Coke place in a while. On the flipside, I LOOOOOOVED DH’s drink. It tasted like sushi ginger with an alcoholic kick! So, I took his drink…he took mine…and while I was getting VERY hungry…I was back to having a drink I liked.

And finally…some bread and butter!!!!!!!!

15124790084_b15c7b96ca.jpg

I think it was good…I’m not really sure though. I was eating like a person who hasn’t eaten in days. Supposedly, something was lavender scented. Yeah…I’m sure it was, but I was HUNGRY!

It also didn’t take too long for appetizers to come out. DH got the pork nigiri and I got a flatbread that was like an elevated version of a Reuben sandwich.

15559916630_872b62c5eb.jpg

Mine was good…DH’s was REALLY good!

He also had to be a show off. He’s never used chop sticks in his life (or so he says!). He opens his packet, unsnaps them, and was using them like a pro! I’ve been using chop sticks since I was a kid and I’m lucky if I don’t accidentally fling my food at neighboring tables when using them. See…look at the show off!!!

15559580907_126d5df0bf.jpg

I was also given a pair, but mainly for humor. Ya know, just in case I want to eat flatbread with chopsticks!

Yay for the Mary Blair inspired carpeting!!!

In all of this, our awesome server also noticed that DH and I swapped drinks. He brought me a Diet Coke and when I asked him about it and noted that we opted to switch bevs, he said something like “I know, but you weren’t getting the caffeine you requested by doing that.” So sweet! Making sure I’m caffeinated!

15744760915_7f037aba46.jpg

Next up – entrees. I think DH got the Spanish seafood pilaf.

15559339648_22bcd13bdb.jpg

I got Ahi Tuna over lo mein noodles.

15125366933_c7cdfe81a0.jpg

We were on the phone with our girls during entrees, so it was tough to fully enjoy. I don’t talk and eat very well. Now, I do know DH loved his, although he wishes he got the bison or the pork two ways (he’s just a huge fan of CG and everything pork that they happen to do). As for mine…the tuna was perfection! Everything else was a bit salty, but I was good and loved that they allow you to request how well cooked (or not so much) you want your tuna. I know – to be expected in a finer establishment. You just hear of so many places now skipping this due to food borne illness liability. Still, when asked…rare, please!!!

I also see the Electrical Water Pageant!!! Now it just needs to get a little bit closer...

Loving your report. Some of our dates crossed over and we had to park on the grass at Epcot (maybe on the same day) we were just directed there Early in the morning so they must have been expecting huge crowds. Loving all the photos. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I've been trying to read along with yours as well :) Yeah, I seem to recall we had some overlap in dates. Very interesting that you parked in the grass at Epcot. The crowd projections have to be the reason. Thanks for reading :)

Focaccia. Lavender Focaccia. Want. Some. Now! :hungry:

See...this is what I get for showing up to CG being absolutely ravenous! I couldn't truly enjoy it. :(

Kids are in bed...kitchen has been cleaned for the 3rd time today...and I am going to finish up day 2 of this trip report!

Now, I did say cake before…didn’t I? I was kind of a cake pest. I checked at check in to make sure it was there…checked again when being escorted to our table…and checked again with our server. Yes, everyone assured me that the cake was there. DH was still eating, but I wanted the cake because I wanted time to take pics and post about it to everyone and their mother! Priorities! Our server was hesitant…figured we’d want to wait until all other food was done and cleared from the table. I explained myself and he said he’d go get it. And then I sat…all antsy…like a kid on Christmas waiting for the green light to open gifts. I started scanning the dining room for any signs of my cake. I remembered that back in 2012, they brought out Sammie’s cake and left it on a bar area for about 15 min before bringing it to our table…but no sign of them doing that this time with this cake.

I was also getting nervous. I was so unhappy with my 40th birthday cake that I was worried I might be setting myself up for another letdown. I kept telling myself that Chef Brian is back…and that there was no need to worry. I started to second guess my decision to go for this without a sketch, but I reminded myself that my written description was more detailed and clear than the average person’s sketch. And then…I saw it!!!

And everyone in the dining room that saw it was in awe! All of these eyes in the dining room following our server as he carefully walked our glorious cake to our table. And there she is!

15559944520_4db2fc1ab5_z.jpg

I know I had a huge grin on my face, but how could I not? I mean, I had a cake with a 5 pound white chocolate castle!!! You’d be grinning too if that was sitting on your cake!

Of course all of the tables around us kept turning around to look. It was funny…there were a few tables with kids…very well behaved kids…and the adults were telling the kids not to stare, yet the grown ups were turning around to get 2nd and 3rd looks at the cake.

I was really bummed that I was stuck with the camera on my phone for all of this, but kept reminding myself that I’m fortunate to have even that.

This was my fave pic since you can see the actual castle in the background almost perfectly aligned with the castle on the cake.

Now if you’re confused on the theme or the inscription…here’s the 411. I initially asked for a steampunk themed cake with angry Donald and fully armed Stitch (2D standup edible images) on top. The problem…Stitch and Donald don’t normally appear in cartoons together, so they’re not permitted to be on the cake together. I was aware of this rule, but I had totally forgotten about it when starting the cake process. So, I had to totally revamp my plans. I decided to go with Stitch as my theme since I already had my chance/turn with a Donald cake. I morphed it into a full on Lilo & Stitch theme mixed with Polynesian flair in my request description modification.

Chef Brian shared the images he’d be using beforehand, so I was fully aware of all of that prior to seeing the cake. The inscription also remained the same even though the theme changed. It was probably an omen that he knew my original theme idea as I feared the inscription would have been shot down as well had he not known my original intentions. The “cute & fluffy” line was of course from Lilo and Stitch and was for DH. The “and she quacks too” is a nod to Donald and me. I honestly don’t LOVE this, but I was making this cake more about DH…so I caved. Long story short, when I get to talking, he accuses me of quacking like a duck. I’m not too fond of him saying this, but it worked well with the Donald and Stitch theme…so I went with it.

It was about this time that I also decided to do what we ALWAYS do with Mickey confetti.

15559382238_3ffd10f320_z.jpg

BONUS- better view of water pageant!

15746350702_913fe91729_z.jpg

The cake was taken from our table so it could be dismantled, cut and boxed. While I probably would have been content to sit there and admire it for hours, there is one big perk of all of this… I get to EAT THE CAKE!!!

15742902271_86e75c0c00_z.jpg

It was a chocolate cake with Bailey’s mousse filling. YUM! The mousse was actually very mild, but still tasty. The only strange part was they used vanilla buttercream. I’d asked for chocolate when putting in my order, but the vanilla tasted really good against the other flavors.

Somewhere in all of the cake stuff, a manager also comes over to our table. Now, I think she was doing this because she was questioning our server bringing out the cake before all other food was cleared. i.e. wanted to make sure we were OK with this, but if that really was her motive, she did an excellent and magical job at hiding it. She said that the entire staff went nuts over the cake when it was delivered to the restaurant. That it was one of the most amazing cakes they’ve ever had delivered to Cali Grill and she just wanted to take the time to meet the couple who would order something like this. I can’t remember if she brought it up or if it was me…but I made sure to point out that I requested the cake be brought out early. I told her about the Cake Talk thread and my trip report. Then I explained my camera blunder and how I just wanted a little extra time for pics…making sure to praise our server for honoring my wishes rather than adhering to protocol. I mean, he was hysterical the entire meal and provided AWESOME service. He made so much of our night (more on that) and the last thing I wanted was for him to get in trouble.

So, here’s where my night of perfect plans goes awry…but in a good way…

As I’d noted before, we had wanted to head back into MK for EMH as well as our SDMT FP+. Back when I planned out this night, I thought we’d be fairly full from F&W and just be grabbing a few appetizers. It never occurred to me in the planning phase that we might just drink all day and actually be at CG for a full dinner. BUT…that’s what happened…and it was now about 9:40pm. We were finishing up with our cake…no chance of getting the cake back to the Poly, changing and making it back into MK for Wishes and SDMT. No chance. We were also hitting that point where we were going to have to pay the check…so this great window seat was probably going to go to waste (well, for us). I also couldn’t see us going out to the deck and juggling a box of cake while trying to watch fireworks. Yup, it was sounding like a fairly un-magical end to our awesome dinner…until fate stepped in.

Now, I’m sure much of this has to do with the crazy amount of $ we were spending and the gratuity our server could receive…but he told us to stay put. He even suggested DH pull his chair alongside me so that he could watch in comfort without turning around. As awesome as it was that we were being told to stay at our table to catch the fireworks, I was still kind of bummed. Then something happened which made me realize this truly was fate. I heard something “strange” and the windows started looking… well … a bit blurry (for lack of a better description). We realized…it’s POURING! The front that was expected to come through was officially here and was dumping tons of rain on WDW. We were high and dry at the top of the Contemporary!

The next thing that happened…our awesome server brought us some champagne to go along with our Wishes viewing! I joked that the alcohol just never seems to end with this meal. He just made us feel like such VIPs for the entire meal…and it was GREAT!

15124865474_c78eb7328d_z.jpg

Now, if I had my regular camera up and running…you know I would have photographed Wishes…at least what I could. But with my phone…I just had 0 desire. In some ways, I’m sad that I didn’t take a single pic of Wishes that night, but the reality…it was nice to sit back and just enjoy the show. I watched Wishes from beginning to end without ever reaching for a camera. I’ve NEVER done that. Aside from no pictures…the only other con of this was that I was still crying in my normal spots to cry…and there was no hiding behind a camera. At least DH chose to let it go – this time. As you could imagine…Tink didn’t fly due to the weather, but the show was still its usual awesomeness!

We paid out the check after Wishes and it was painful. It was an awesome night and I knew it was going to be pricey…but I was having that OUCH moment. When adding the cake onto the bill…it was in line with dining at V&A and doing the wine pairings. Oh well, so we paid and headed down to the monorail.

The monorail was full of poncho clad people who were ready to be back at their warm and dry resort rooms. It was still raining, and we were quite tired and full, so we also opted to just head back to our room. So, no SDMT and no EMH for us…and ya know what, we were good with that! It wasn’t the night we’d planned, but it turned out even better!

After we got back to the room, I decided to mess around with our ADRs. We were still well within our budget, but I was feeling guilty (what the heck? That NEVER happens!) and felt like we spent so much of our night on dining that I wanted a little more go with the flow. I canceled our ADRs for Narcoosee’s and Citirco’s as well as our Chef Mickey’s breakfast on the last day. The breakfast was more because I had 0 desire to get up for a 7:15am meal on our last day. We still had our Flying Fish ADR, but here’s where things are really crazy with this…I still intended to do one more signature TS dinner…but I wanted more spontaneity. The plan was to fly by the seat of our pants and dine wherever on Sunday night and then just see what’s open on Tuesday nights. SUCH REBELS!!! I felt liberated for that brief moment, but the truth is...I really like having ADRs and a plan. More on that in day 3.

Oh…and the other benefit of getting a big cake for so few people this early in the trip…SNACK CAKE! It’s not easy fitting a cake in those mini fridges, but it’s soooooo worth it. Yes, I went by Captain Cook’s, grabbed some forks and knives, and now I was fully equipped to snack on my cake whenever I needed a little bite. Yes, no shame here…I’d have a cake picnic on the floor of my room at least once a day. I’d put down some towels, grab a knife and a fork, and just start snacking away on my cake. So, just remember this if you think it’ll be too much cake. You too could have nightly cake picnics in your room!

***OK, so that's it for day 2. With Thanksgiving and holiday decorating, I probably won't be able to start on day 3 until sometime next week.

WISHING EVERYONE A SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Happy thanksgiving and that cake - just wow - wow! Amazing - if I would have been there I would have been trying to sneak photos.
I have never ordered a cake before that's made for you - are they expensive? Guessing that one would be more than others!
And yes I did a trip report but live so it's difficult to get as much detail as you have here. Have Disney blues hence I am now reading others trip reports (mainly the ones that were there at the same time)

Cakes really vary in price. It all boils down to what you want. This cake was really expensive because of the chocolate castle topper, but it was sooooooo worth it! If you want some cake ideas...both in design and price...I have the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section of the forums. :)

I've thought about doing a live report, but I think I prefer it this way. I find that it really helps with the post trip blues since I get a chance to relive my entire trip...and what buzzed by in a matter of days can take weeks to months to retell. By the time I'm at the end, I'm ready to move past that trip and start looking towards the next. It's not for everyone, but it works for me

Love the cake! Made me hungry. And I've just had breakfast! :p
Happy Thanksgiving.

Yeah...that's the one problem with posting cake pics. It makes me realize...I have no cake!

Thank you!! Hope you have a wonderful trip!!! Can't wait to hear how much fun your BLP had at WDW!!!

Happy thanksgiving! Love the report and what a marvelous cake!! Again thanks for sharing!!

Thanks! Yes, :inlove: LOVE the cake! Definitely one of the most awesome parts of this trip :) Thanks for reading!

Love....making me happy you had so much pixie dust....

So much pixie dust! I mean, I'm still kind of shocked at how perfectly all of it went.

Happy Thanksgiving. The castle cake was the perfect touch for the ending of dinner. My wife saw that and asked me were we can order a cake like that, so can you give us the information of who can we call for a cake to be delivered to Disney World? Following along.
