Does anyone know anything about a Matterhorn refurb in April? I wanted to look at park hours for my trip (April 19-22) and the farthest out available date right now is April 18 so I clicked on that and then under the refurb list, the Matterhorn was listed. I have to say, I will be very disappointed if I don't get to ride this.

Yes, Matterhorn will be closed beginning April 18. We don't yet know when it will reopen.

It basically has to close every year to be kept up. The structure is almost 60 years old, so maintaining it is uncharted territory for Disney attractions. Thunder and Space are roughly 20 years younger.

So are the Subs and the Monorail, but they don't have such frequent refurbs. Many attractions, structures, and ride systems in the park, such as the DLRR, Casey Jr, Dumbo, the Jungle Cruise, and The Mark Twain, are even older.

Time for a complete refit.

Hasn't that been done 10 times already? I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean.

But they're not giant mountains supporting a roller coaster. It needs a lot of maintenance.

Have they completely rebuilt the track? It doesn't seem like it when it's so bumpy. I know it's the Matterhorn, but when they rebuilt Space and Thunder, they became smooth as an Android's bottom.

And the Subs operate partially submerged in a gigantic pool, part of which is in a subterranean warehouse. I get what you're saying, but there has to be more to it. What I'm asking is specifically what is it about the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction that requires so much maintenance?

I don't know the specifics. But typically attractions don't go down for refurb annually for kicks - work has to be done for a refurb to be scheduled or the park loses valuable capacity. If I had more details, I'd share them!

Ever since the fact that Tokyo's small world is being completely rebuilt and relocated, I'm wondering if it would ever be feasible to rebuild the entire Matterhorn from scratch. Instead of trying to maintain the old structure, it would definitely cause less headaches if it were brand spanking new. May even allow for a better ride experience with a new track. As far as I know, I believe I've heard that there can't be a total track replacement due to the tracks actually being built into the mountain.

They do fixes and new track pieces all the time. That comes from the same rumor that if the lagoon were drained, the Matterhorn would fall over.

Right, which is why it's so strange to me that this particular attraction seems have so many frequent maintenance closures.

If I had more details, I'd share them!

Well hurry up and get on it then!! :):)

Pirates and Splash go down every year, though not usually more than a few weeks. Splash already had its refurb this year and none of the effects/AAs were fixed (which is awesome).
I'm trying to decide when to go to the DLR next year, and don't want to be caught in the midst of a huge Pirate/Splash refurb. I know every so many years they go down for months at a time. That would be heartbreaking to have Pirates be down the entire trip for me and Splash for my kids. I can deal with anything else, but Pirates is such a huge part of my experience, I don't want to be without it. lol

If only the entire ride could be redone to make it a comfortable adventure!

My crew of over-21s rode it a couple of weeks ago, most for the first time, and it would be hard to get any of them back on for a second go just because of the physical discomfort of the ride.

But yeah, yay Matterhorn! I will just take a motrin and endure the trauma you inflict on my spine!
