Matterhorn question

I am not a big roller coaster fan, but I can handle Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I have never been on Matterhorn and am trying to find out how it compares in intensity to BTMR. I have watched the YouTube videos of the ride but they can be deceiving. Trying to decide if I want to ride Matterhorn when I go to Disneyland later this summer.

They both have a top speed right around 30 MPH. No major drops on either one. People will probably debate in coming posts one way or the other but the two are probably comparable.

I've heard Space Mountain at MK is like Matterhorn. I don't know if you ride Space at MK though. I believe if you can ride Thunder then Matterhorn shouldn't be a problem. You'll be ok.

That's probably a good comparison. WDW's Space Mountain and the Matterhorn are both single-file seating, cars low to the track, lots of quick turns, not too fast and no huge drops.

Matterhorn has about the same intensity level as Thunder Mt, but its pretty rough. One time I was holding the handlebars tightly and the ride was so jerky I actually injured my right hand. I spent the rest of the night in a lot of pain with a very swollen and bruised hand that continued to ache for days afterwards. I try not to hold on so tightly anymore, but that means I get thrown around more and it's less fun that way.

I think seating matters too. In the front it feels smooth, but in the back you feel like your neck is breaking.

I wouldn't call the Matterhorn intense at any level. However, it's one of the roughest rides out there. Most people attribute its roughness due to the two-car train, when it was designed for only one car.

I agree that if you can ride BTMR, the Matterhorn won't be a problem.
But I have to disagree with the Space Mountain comparison.
Although I love 'em both. Space Mountain at MK is much, much rougher and much more intense than the Matterhorn.
The Matterhorn is a classic "piece of cake" roller coaster.

This was the biggest dissapointment on our June trip to DL. For all four of us (that includes a 9 and 7 year old). We were just expecting so much more. Not fast, not high, not exciting. But thats just us. We loved the DL version of Space Mountain and CA Screamin, but matterhorn, not so much!! I would not it again, but wouldnt wait long or wouldnt need to do it more than once each trip. I understand its an old classic, but just didnt like it. Other than that, not sure you can find a more comfortable park in all of Disney!!!! We had a great stay!!

BTMRR has a top speed of about 30mph, but Matterhorn is more like around 18mph. It just has a lot more of the really tight turns so it seems faster than that.

I agree with others who've said the closest comparison to Matterhorn would be Space Mt at MK. Only much better IMHO.

Matterhorn goes 23 miles per hour, I believe.

It was all academic since we didn't get a chance to ride Matterhorn. We did ride Big Thunder and it seemed a little more intense at DL then at MK.

I loved Matterhorn, but I don't like the new cars. Maybe it's just me, I'm a tall guy. The old cars were fun and more comfortable. We went about about 15 times our first trip. With the new cars, we only went on once. It's probably more because of my height but I wasn't comfortable in the new cars and they kind of hurt a little bit
