Mass Location

There are no more Catholic masses on property. The Orlando Diocease wont allow it.

Funny, I heard that Disney stopped having services on property because they could not accommodate every denomination that requested to have them there. To solve the problem, they stopped having religious services altogether.

I think your response is more likely accurate than that the Diocese won't allow it. If ANYONE won't allow it, it would be that crazy "Mary Queen of the Universe" Catholic church just outside property - they don't want to lose revenue!!

I'm Catholic, but I've read enough in guide books to avoid that church with all my might. I don't like the name to begin with, and I hear that they're even more money-hungry than the rest of the Catholic Churches in the world!

While it is true there are no services on property, the reason isn't the Diocese or Disney, its the local church.

Before this church was built, they needed all the donations they could get. But with the priest shortage and the fact that with our great Catholic guilt, those that would go to church in the park will make the trip out to the church.

I may be wrong in this next statement, but where I think the Diocese comes in is not allowing a priest to conduct a marriage ceremony in the park (Wedding Pavilion or otherwise), only in a church.

Think of that money lost!

I thought that was the case with all Catholic weddings in any diocese. You won't find a priest doing a wedding in a city park or on your Mom's deck. (At least, I've never been to a Catholic wedding any place but a church)

Maybe because it's a sacrament, it must take place in a holy space??

This inofrmation is from the Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine website:

The beginning of the article says that their aim was to provide masses for traveling Catholics, and at first they held them in hotels all over Orlando--not just at WDW. Then they built the shrine and had a permanent worship space.

(direct quote)
Still, the masses at Disney continued. But time was running out. The priest shortage would create problems. We wanted to continue the Disney masses, but it was not to be. Their time had passed. In late July of 2002 we experimented with offering one mass within the Disney complex. But the double numbers that showed up at the single mass caused discomfort to guests, and with no other suitable place available the Disney Company and the Shrine came to a mutual agreement. The masses would be discontinued, and Disney would direct Catholic guests to the Shrine.

Thats correct. A Catholic Wedding...a Sacrament...must take place in a Chapel, Church or Cathedral. I have seen priests refuse to marry a couple in a non religious location. There are also other rules that need to be followed.

Thanks, tigsmom for the confirmation.

And I also think that one cannot get married at Mary...Universe because it is a shrine rather than a chapel, church, or cathedral.

But what I don't understand is why it's ok to receive the eucharist, but not to get married there.

I am no expert by any means, but I think its because not all shrines are churches. A shrine may exist inside a church or stand alone.
Mass may be said anywhere as long as there is a priest or deacon present.
If anyone is more knowledgable please chime in.

I vaguely remember from where I lived there and attended Mass at the shrine that the priest said they had no parrish (?) or not sure of the word, but meant that the people who attended were tourists, not people who belonged to that parrish. Maybe that´s why they don´t marry people there, because if you were to do amonestations, noone would know the couple to proof they are 'eligible' to get married.

Yes, that rule in the Catholic Church about not administering sacraments out of a Church, is also valid here in Mexico. There are no weddings or first communions, or baptisms out of a church, or in your house, or garden, or beach. Even if you wanted to administer a sacrament in a chapel (let´s say in your house) that is not recognized by the Church, the priest won´t do it.

The reason Disney accomodated Masses on property was because there was no other place to have the tourists go to church. When the shrine opened, those services stopped because then, there was a place to do it - and a very pretty one may I add-. As far as I know, Disney had some money put into its construction. If you haven´t visited it, do it... it´s nice. There is a tile mural in one of the chapels devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the mother of the mexicans, and during Christmas time, they set a replica of the Fontanini Nativity Scene that is set in Saint Peter´s Basilica in Rome.

Maria has got it right.

And the reason Mary, Queen of the Universe is so "money-grubing" is that they have no parish. THey have no one who gives money regularly to the church except the people who come and visit it.
