I don't have the exact date on hand, but it is this fall. I will be attending the sneak peek sales presentation for it on Feb 28, much like the Tarzan one I went to a few months ago. I'll be sure to update everyone with anything newsworthy I find out there.

Mary Poppins will be at the New Amsterdam Theatre: Performances from 14 Oct 2006 - Opening 16 Nov 2006 - Closing Open-Ended ; Tickets are not yet on sale. They will be available either through Ticketmaster or through Telecharge. That has also not yet been announced. Watch the NY Times on Sundays - they will have a full page ad announcing ticket sale dates. I saw the show in London and it was spectacular - but also much darker than the Disney movie...it incorporates both the primary story line and music of the movie, but adds imporant elements from the book - i.e. the story is darker, the family is in more peril, the children have a nightmare with the toys in their room coming to life (absolutely not appropriate for young children) - and the father's evil nanny appearing in the second act to wreck havoc. I am sure they will change some minor elements to make it more assessible to American audiences, but they won't be changing much - so one should keep that in mind as they begin to take bookings. When it opened in London, it was heavily advertised as NOT a family musical, and parents were strongly suggested to leave their under-8 year olds at home.

I'd call it a family musical - I saw the pre-London opening in Bristol. There is one nightmare scene where the toys grow in size, which could be a little much for toddlers, and the wicked nanny is almost witch-like. But for the most part it's a family show (provided the parents have taught their kids how to behave in the grown up situation of a show)
