Marching bands...

I'm in my Kirkwood High school Pioneer marching band. We've been getting really popular. We get huge crowd response before and after our half time shows. Hardly anyone leaves the stands during half time.
For our routine, we march onto the fields in our lines, the we start to play "Aquarius" from the musical "Hair." And we move into different positions in lines. Then, there comes a large part where the drums play wild rythems. During that time, we move into S and zigsag formations. And then move into different lines, where we go crazy playing "Let the sun shine in."
We then play Elton John's "Don't let the sun go down on me." where we move into a formation that looks like the sun setting over the horizon. The next part is a song that the Poms dance to.

My son plays trombone in marching band.
This year's show is about the Civil War. They play selections from "Glory". (They do NOT, however, play "Dixie")
At one point in the show, the dancing girls drag "dead" bodies off the field to the accompaniment of a single snare drum. The band turns their back to the audience, puts down their horns, and stands with their arms out to the sides. They are supposed to look like a cemetery filled with cross-shaped tombstones.
It may sound gruesome, but it is very moving.
This is totally different for our band, and it was a really hard show to learn, but it is amazing.
All that is on the website is the music (there isn't any video of the marching). The pit part sounds really difficult (not being a percussion person, I can't really say for sure). We use 5 sets of chimes and 7 sets of vibes/marimbas.

Our first comp was yesterday at Citrus... 4th in division ;( cant wait to hear the tapes monday...

I'm not in the marching band, but I was in high school. We never had a theme show. We just did random music. My senior year the percussion feature was played on trash cans.
I work with my high school's band as the clarient instructor at camp every August. This year there were several bands at the camp we were at that did POTC. My band director was discussing this with the instructors at one point and said he bet that one in five bands in the country was probably doing POTC. The band this is year is playing At Your Disposal (percussion feature where the snares play trash cans), Land of Make Believe (my brother's best friend has the trumpet solo in this song and we marched it my Junior year as well when my best friend was the drum major), Into the West from Lord of the Rings and Sirroco.

I was in my high school marching band. Back then theme shows were just starting to appear. The big thing for us was "dance routine" Where the band plays and dances to its own music at the same time. Our band started it, or rather our band director, and the other three high schools in the area followed suit. I believe at the time not many high schools did dance routines, so it was really rare to have four in one county. My freshman year our team went to state. The other band was so blown away, having never seen anything like it, they asked for an oncore at the end of the game. Enjoy your years while they last, they go by very fast.
My band director is going to let me "Help" next year....
We got fourth at citrus HS in Citrus FLA... Next saturday is durant which i believe is near Plant city...
I do enjoy this year the most... im section leader for pit and I get the respect i been waning for years....
(and the power to get some people in trouble for making me MAD...)

I was a 5 year member of the University of Wisconsin Marching band...went to 2 rose bowls during my stay. Won them both.
We were and still are known for our hard-core marching style...high-knee every step...double time "run-on" style pregame marching, and the 5th quarter post-game show.
We once performed at a Tamba Bay / Detroit NFL football game. Both home and away crowds booed us as we entered. When we left we had a standing ovation.
For those in high school bands, I always say to stick with it...there is nothing like performing for crowds up to 100,000 fans....or marching in the rose bowl New Years Day Parade.

Im in The George Jenkins High School Dreamaker Band. I play Susaphone. This year our theme is "Lets Groove! The music of Earth, Wind, and Fire." We play "In the Stone/Getaway September, Lets Groove, and After the Love is Gone." We just had our first competition Saturday, we got two superiors in music, two excellents in marching and an overall superior. The BIG competition is in two weeks at Winter Haven High School so now were having alot of practices to get ready. We march at the MK every Christmas.

I play saxophone in the Ohio Northern University marching band. Our theme this year is "Short Ride in a Classical Machine." We're playing Short Ride in a Fast Machine, William Tell Overture, Sabre Dance, Bolero, and 1812 Overture. We actually just got back today from performing at the Toronto Argonauts game yesterday. It was cool playing in the Skydome, and the DVD release of Aladdin was sponsoring kid's day, so John Hope, GM of Disney Canada did the coin toss.
