Marathon Weekend

I am currently planning on taking my wife and almost 3 year old son to the World from Jan 4 - Jan 11. I understand Marathon weekend starts on the 8th. Should we expect increased crowd levels that weekend? Thanks

You may see more people at MK on Monday this January as Disney has the new Marathon Monday for 2011. For everyone who completes the marathon on Sunday, if they bring their medal to MK on Monday, they get in for free.

Please note you will have trouble moving around the resort with buses and cars the day of the marathon, we had Magical Express to the aurport this past year leaving in the morning and ONLY made our flight becuase the flight from Newark was delaeyd by headwinds, we spent 2 hours in WDW on the bus delayed by the traffic and what seemed to be inexperienced people directing it

Will it be crowded that weekend? Ayup. But, most of the crowds will be at the resorts and the restaurants. Not many people go to the parks. This year Monday may be a bit more crowded than in past as runners get free park admission that day.

Both days (Sat & Sun) there are road closures so the race can use the roads. Sat, the 1/2, should be clear before most people would notice. They need to be able to finish in 3.5 hours, and it starts about 6, so they should be done by 9:30-10:00. Sun, the full, is a bit trickier. Since people have 7 hours to complete, some roads can be closed until 1 in the afternoon. However, the course is set that the major roads are done with early, and the open them as soon as they can. as the day goes on, the roads towards the end will go from fully closed, to 1 lane closed, down to 1 lane open. From about mile 22 on, the course is in parks or on walkways which greatly helps to minimize affects on non runners. Some years however they have stopped buses altogether for a few hours rather than try to route around the course. If you need to be somewhere that morning, I would suggest having a car, or trying to reschedule as Disney transit will be very slow at best early Sunday morning.
