Malfunction Puts Brakes On Universal Coaster

POSTED: 10:53 am EST January 28, 2005
UPDATED: 2:17 pm EST January 28, 2005

People riding the Hulk rollercoaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure got a little more thrill than they expected Friday.

The coaster didn't slow down as much as it was supposed to at a braking point, so the emergency brakes kicked in, and the ride came to a stop just past where it should have, WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.

Everybody was able to exit the ride, except for the folks in the front row. They had to wait for a bonus ride down on a cherry picker.

A park representative said no one was in danger, and no injuries were reported.

An investigation will be conducted before the ride resumes operation.

Thank goodness that no one was hurt Even but that still scares me a little bit to go back on the ride, even though I know that's kind of silly :lookaroun

If everything went as expected, how is this news-worthy?

Sounds like the coaster stopped right at either the main block brakes, or the final brake run.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

It had to have happened at the mid-brake run. The final brake run has walkways along the sides so the front row could have easily gotten out if that was the case.

Not that big of a thing.

Things go wrong, thats why they have fail safes, its just because its Universal (or if it was Disney) thats its being reported.

It stopped in a controlled stop, right at one of the walkways where riders could easily and safely get off of the ride. Unfortunately, it stopped about 2 feet past where it should have. The result was that the first row of the car was past the end of the catwalk and those riders could not get off of the ride safely. The fire department was called to make sure that they did everything safely. They ended up brining out a lift that was positioned directly alongside the first row so the riders could get out of the row safely without attempting to climb over the seats to the row behind them.

As they were taken off of the row, the climbed from the lift platform onto the catwalk and went down the stairs like anyone else. The two pics below from the WESH web site might make it a little clearer.
