An encore performance for Disneyland's Magic Shop

Word leaked early last week that Disneyland's Main Street Magic Shop would close for a previously unscheduled "refurbishment," creating concern for the future of the iconic store. Cast members blamed the pending closure on a number of factors, including a search for a new supplier of magic tricks and a long-overdue remodel to bring the tiny store into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The store was supposed to have closed on Friday, but a last-minute decision delayed the closure, leaving the store's schedulers scrambling to fill shifts for the coming week.

I really hope the magic shop remains a Disney operated location, its one of the few locations on Main Street that offers some truly great merchandise, along with the few other places on Main Street are still great like, the Candy Palace, the new Foutousey Shoppe, 20th Century Music Company and Disneyana.

The last time I was in that little shop I did notice how tiny and cramped it seemed.

And to be honest, it looks like it hasn't had a remodel since the 1960's; the pea soup green walls, the cheap linoleum tile floor, the basic wood display cases, the basic light fixtures. It's a real slice of Disneyland circa 1961, and that's not always a good thing when viewed from a 21st century sensibility. It could certainly use some sprucing up.

But I do hope that it sticks around, just in an updated and better themed version of its old self.

Disneyland will be vacating the Main Street Magic Shop beginning this Saturday, October 3 to make way for the third-party Houdini's Magic Shop, who will run and manage the shop now with its own employees.

The shop will finally be fully stocked with magic toys and tricks again, but it will no longer be run by Disneyland Cast Members. Sacrifices, I suppose, to keep this Main Street icon intact.

There is no word yet if the store will be closed at all after October 3, when Disneyland ceases control of the space, for a refurbishment or any sort of re-theme. If I hear anything, I'll keep you posted.

Anyway, I've updated the entry in the original post:

Main Street Magic Shop - New vendor
Details: Originally expected to close until a new vendor was found, the Main Street Magic Shop remained open without magic merchandise since the end of June 2009. The shop is now expected to be taken over by a third-party vendor, and current Disneyland Cast Members working the shop will be relocated to other area shops.
Project Status: Disneyland will cease control of the shop beginning Saturday, October 3 when Houdini's Magic Shop begins its lease on the space.

Im pretty sure the following at DL are already opperated and staffed by 3rd parties, Cristal d'Orleans, Castle Heraldry, Jewel of Orleans, and Crystal Arts.

WDW fans arnt going to like this part of the paragraph much
Disney has reportedly been unable to obtain CPSIA certificates from Magic Makers, the maker of the SS Adams Co. line of gags and novelties, and is now looking for a new supplier. The issue is further complicated by the fact that Walt Disney World no longer has a Disney-owned magic shop, so this product would be purchased only for Disneyland. Such single-Resort purchasing is discouraged under the "One Disney" initiative, and cast members tell us that Disneyland is not getting a lot of support from the Walt Disney World-based merchandise buyers

While the Magic Shop reportedly has strong support from the Disneyland-based merchandise managers, and this last-minute reversal is encouraging, cast members are preparing themselves for the possibility that the store may still close. Even if the store is remodeled, cast members fear the Main Street Magic Shop will be leased to an outside vendor. Lessees already operate the magic cart in Downtown Disney, as well as the magic shop in Walt Disney World's Downtown Disney, and the future of the Disneyland store may rest in finding an outside vendor to source, stock, demonstrate and sell magic.

Some more news, the Magic Shop closed on Sunday while it gets remodeled which it needs badly, and Houdinis will take over when it reopens.

The tricks and magicians are set to return to the classic Main Street Magic Shop at Disneyland next month.

Houdini’s Magic Shop is slated to take over as a private operator of the retail outlet when it re-opens in about a month, but it will keep the same Main Street Magic Shop name, Disney announced this week.

The shop closed Sunday so the store could be remodeled for Houdini’s takeover.

Disneyland Resort to Introduce New Magic to Historic Shop

New operator Houdini will bring enhanced products and certified magicians to the Main Street Magic Shop

Disneyland Resort is pleased to announce that Houdini’s Magic Shop has been selected as the new operator of its iconic Main Street Magic Shop.

“We are excited to welcome Houdini to Main Street U.S.A.,” said Jon Storbeck, vice president of Disneyland. “Houdini will further enhance the Guest experience by offering an expanded assortment of quality products as well as certified magicians to perform demonstrations.”

Geno Munari, who founded Houdini’s Magic Shop in 1993, said, “I’ve had a passion for magic since I was a young boy. I am thrilled to be able to share my enthusiasm with Disney Guests from around the globe.” Munari has acquired the exclusive rights to many quality magic tricks. These brand name magic products have developed a loyal customer base among professional magicians as well as amateurs. The company currently operates a successful magic cart kiosk at Downtown Disney.

The store, which will remain named Main Street Magic Shop, closed on October 4, for approximately one month, while Houdini refreshes the interior and stocks new merchandise. Approximately a dozen current Main Street Magic Shop Cast Members have been reassigned to other merchandise roles.

Magic merchandise at Disneyland Resort was first offered at Merlin’s Magic Shop near Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in Fantasyland, when the park opened July 17, 1955. That location closed on January 16, 1983. The Main Street Magic Shop opened in June 1957, taking the place of a Wonderland Music Company shop at the same location. Merv Taylor Co. operated the two magic shops until March 15, 1965, when Disneyland took over the operation. Actor Steve Martin was one of the early Cast Members in the Main Street Magic Shop.
