The first time I saw MSEP (in DCA), I was around 10, and had only ever seen Spectro. My initial reaction was that it seemed incredibly dated, with annoying music and floats from old, obscure movies. As I saw it more, I got used to it and can now appreciate for what it is - a spectacular parade that launched the medium of nighttime parades, and with pretty catchy music as well. Needless to say it's an acquired taste.
That said, I still somewhat prefer Spectro.
