Magic Kingdom, June 4, 1989

I just rescued some more footage from my family's first trip to Disney World on June 4, 1989. We had been to DisneyLAND many, many times, but this was our first experience at the World. The highlight for me is the moment when we trick my grandmother into riding Big Thunder Mountain. She hated every second of it and still talks about it to this day.

Yeah, 31 minutes. I just decided to post the whole thing, raw footage in all its glory. My dad actually damaged the heads on his camera filming on Big Thunder Mountain (the second time). Good old Hi-8 format!

This was close to my first time in March of 1991.

1989 was a funny time when you look back on it. If you look at the styles of people at the time it was a transition period between the earlier 1980s with more of the afros and longer hair but before the era of the Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer haircut. It was almost a non-existant style at that time. Everybody's glasses were huge back then though, haha, before the wired frames came into play

Excellent video though. You know, I still have a soft spot for the skyride. I never thought it "ruined the magic" being able to look on the top of the buildings. Think about it, you can't climb up the castle, you only have a view of the whole park from Splash Mountain for two seconds so to me this was the epitome of a bird's eye view. Unfortunately it seems like it's from a bygone era. They aren't around anymore.

I assume the lady in the red is your mother? Your dad is videotaping and I assume that is your grandmother also tagging along with you (hopefully still alive and well)

Not old, just vintage.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I went to WDW for the first time about 2 months after you. I remember those light up visors very well. I begged my mom for one of those for pretty much the entire trip until I got one. I bet if I looked hard enough I could probably still find it somewhere in my house. I also believe that I spied the world famous Disney Handwich around 3:45 in the video. Pure vintage awesomeness!

Yes, the lady in red is mother, the dad is videotaping, and grandma and grandpa are there, as well. I am one of the teens, the dorkiest of the three :) I would have been fifteen at the time. Grandma is still alive and well and still occasionally complains about "That time you boys got me on that crazy ride!"

A couple of minutes into it and I can't believe how steady your cam was back then. Here we are decades later and even with image stabilization, your video is smoother.

My dad was a professional videographer, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. He was using a Canon A1 Hi8 camera on this particular trip.

What a great video - thanks for sharing! It brings me back to my trips to WDW in 1988 and 90 (I was 8 and 10, respectively).

We had the awesome 80s visors too, and I still have my fiber optic wand thingy - the height of 80s coolness!

I also really enjoyed watching parts of the "Now is the Time" version of CoP - especially the final scene. And I'm reminded of something that always bugs me in that show (besides the phantom "extra" daughter ). What does "mother" need a paint stirrer for - she's wallpapering!

I didn't have time to watch the entire video, but I really enjoyed the first 15 minutes. Thanks again for posting

What a great video of the time! I would have been there in August that year as a 16 yr old. I remember those lighted hats! :ROFLOL: I also remember waiting in those loooooonnnng Thunder mountain lines back then. :brick: That and Space Mountain. Ugh.

And I thought I was about to see the only video with the Mark IV doors opening, but  Still can't find a video with the opening and closing of the doors...

Oh...and the "best" version of CoP. :)

What a differance at the ticket booths. Now you never see more than a few ticket booths open and the lines are never long. In this video it looks like all the booths were open and the lines are crazy.
